Even if you opt for an easy option, like a beginner-friendly philodendron, they still require occasional waterings and trips to the store to pick up soil. However, there's an easier option that rivals even faux fiddle leaf fig trees: Air plants.What are air plants? There are many different species of air plants, but a popular variety you may be familiar with are tillandsias. Air plants don't require any soil to grow. You may have seen them out in the wild, either drifting along on the ground or growing on trees. Called "commence growing," air plants plants pull all the minerals and water they need from the air, and only use their roots to stabilize themselves by attaching to nearby treeswithout zapping their nutrients. Some varieties, such as bromeliads, are thought to be helpful in removing pollution from the air.How do you care for air plants at home? Because of this "commence growing" technique, air plants are one of the easiest species to keep at home. They can be kept in terrariums or in pots with no soil, and only require modest upkeep. As they typically grow in the wild in the shade of a tree's leaves, air plants require indirect sunlight to stay healthy. Too much sunlight can scorch their leaves, while too little can lead to a lack of nutrients. Air plants should be kept indoors, away from extreme weather.How often should air plants be watered?Air plants do require frequent waterings. Because they don't live in soil, the two most common ways to properly hydrate air plants is either to soak them in a pot of water once a week for twenty minutes, or gently mist them 2-3 times a week. There are many different types of air plants, and each species has a different method with which you can propagate. Some varieties can be pruned, and the cuts can be used to grow new plants. Others create offsets from the "mother" that can be separated to create a new plant. Be sure to research your specific variety before propagating.What are common diseases and pests to air plants?Air plants are susceptible to root rot, so you'll want to avoid overwatering them. Mushy stems are a common indicator that your plant is over-hydrated. On the other hand, browning leaves could be a sign they require more moisture. Other common pests are bugs, so be sure to gently wipe down your plants if you notice any signs of them.Do air plants have flowers?Some varieties of air plants bloom once in their lifetime, sometimes for just a few days, and sometimes for a year. There's no definite guide to when your air plant will bloom, so you'll have to be patient. After a bloom, prune your air plant near the base and allow it to grow back healthy.Are air plants pet-safe?Because there are so many varieties of air plants, you'll want to do research on your specific species to make sure you keep your pets safe. For more than 25 years Vik Muniz, the Brazilian conceptual artist, has made regular trips to Salvador, a port city that is the capital of the countrys Bahia region. He and his wife Malu Barretto, who are based in Rio de Janeiro and New York, have always loved the coastal town for its animated civic life and vibrant blend of music, gastronomy, religion, art, and architecture.Culturally speaking, Salvador is the most interesting place in Brazil, in my opinion, says Muniz, a native of So Paulo who is acclaimed for his photographic recreations of iconic images using unexpected materials such as chocolate syrup, toys, and garbage. Its a pan-African mecca, really.Ricardo LabougleMalu Barretto and Vik Muniz stroll along their homes street in Salvador, the capital of Brazils Bahia region.Muniz and Barretto, an events planner, are now actively participating in Salvadors cultural landscape. They recently restored a 19th-century cliffside rowhouse in Santo Antnio Alm do Carmo, a residential neighborhood perched high above the Bay of All Saints. A three-minute walk from their house, with rooms for when their four children visit, is another historic building they have renovated. This annex houses an entertaining space with a veranda overlooking the water, Munizs office and art atelier, a music studio for their oldest child, and three small apartments they offer to friends. We consider this an extension of the house, Muniz says.Culturally speaking, Salvador is the most interesting place in Brazil."Brenda Bello, a New Yorkbased architect who designed the couples apartment in Paris and Munizs studio in Brooklyn, provided the plans for their Salvador home. But during the pandemic shutdown, Muniz and Barretto managed the hands-on renovation themselves. In 2022 they purchased the nearby building, originally two multifamily homes that had been abandoned for decades. The artist, who calls himself an amateur architect, worked with Bello to reconfigure the structures into breezy open spaces that wrap around a courtyard filled with tropical plants.Meanwhile, Barretto and a colleague, Felipe Cipriano, designed the interiors of both the house and the center, furnishing them with chairs upholstered in Brazilian fabrics and light fixtures hand-woven from cane and string. I wanted to do something very simple and organic to feel like Bahia, says Barretto, who has since launched an interior design firm, Toca, with restaurant projects in So Paulo.Take a Tour of artist Vik Muniz's Brazilian getaway.The couple visit Salvador at least half a dozen times a year, always staying the whole month of January before Carnival. This year the new building allowed them to host activities ranging from concerts and meals to late night DJ parties, standup comedy shows, and artist talks, with hundreds of people in attendance.For Muniz, the studio in Salvador has also been invigorating. There, in 2022, he was inspired to make the portrait Florinda, based on a photograph of the Afro-Brazilian woman Florinda Anna do Nascimento, a prosperous 19th-century jewelry trader. He used glittery bits of shaved metal to compose the likeness of this historical figure, accented with actual jewelry from the collection of an antiques dealer in Salvador, which he then photographed to make the final image.Ricardo LabougleMuniz, who worked as a bartender in the 1980s at the Palladium in New York, designed the bar. He still plays bartender at dinners with friends. Some of these have medicinal powers, and some are aphrodisiacs, says Muniz, who still plays bartender at their smaller dinners with friends."Contemporary art is not just for people who can buy it.He procured his ingredients for the liquors in the bustling San Joaquim market, one of his favorite places in the city. He loves its unique wares, which range from baskets and textiles to all sorts of religious items. In the heart of the market, directly in front of a bar, Muniz has opened a small white-cube gallery, inviting artists such as Anish Kapoor and Beatriz Milhazes to exhibit their work. People [in the market] drink beer and look at art, he says. For me its important, because it shows that contemporary art is not just for people who can buy it.Ricardo LabougleMunizs office is filled with his extensive book collection. He created the Mickey Mouse sculpture on the built-in sofa. The couple are constantly adding to their collections, and many of the works come from Bahia. They display these objectsfrom 18th-century wood and ivory statuettes of saints to colorful indigenous ceramics and African masksthroughout their home and the center. Muniz especially prizes his maps of Salvador, some of which date from the 16th century. He displays them on the walls side by side with the stunning water views. There are battles, invasions, lots of really cool pirate stories, Muniz says of the maps. He also rareley misses the citywide Afro-Brazilian festival and boat procession, which takes place every February 2 in celebration of Iemanj, the goddess of the sea. Elon Musk's creepy dad seems to be linking his estranged son's shoddy parenting skills to one of his grandchildren coming out as transgender.During a recent episode of the South Africa-based "Wide Awake" podcast, the elder Musk audaciously claimed that Elon's wealth made his child-rearing practices "weird.""[Elon] had five children, each one had their own nanny," Musk told podcaster Joshua Radin. "He didnt spend enough time with them.""The result is [Elon's] boys and Kimballs two boys grew up not able to cross a street," the 79-year-old claimed, referencing the eldest of his sons' children. "My daughters would say 'Dad, you wont believe it, Elons kids and Kimballs boys, they cant cross the road. We have to hold their hands across the road when theyre like 14 years old.'"Perhaps most disgustingly, Musk then claimed, bizarrely, that such behavior and it's unclear whether he meant the nannies or the hand-holding resulted in both sons having transgender children."The two eldest boys Kimbal's eldest son, and Elon's eldest son have declared themselves to be women," the former emerald miner said. "It's bullshit."It's well known that Elon's daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, came out as a trans woman in 2022 when changing her name to distance herself from her dad. We were not, however, able to independently verify that Kimbal also has a trans child and if he does, their grandfather seems to have outed them with that remark.Adding insult to injury, the elder Musk went on to blame his billionaire son for the death of his first child, who died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) at just 10 weeks old in 2002."No, he hasnt been a good father," he said. "The first child was too much with nannies and died in the care of a nanny.""If Elon hears this," he contended, "hes going to shoot me or something."This sort of flippant cruelty very much seems in line with descriptions of the Musk family patriarch in Walter Isaacson's explosive 2023 biography of the Tesla and SpaceX cofounder. It didn't take long for influencer Haliey Welch, who rose to fame as the "Hawk Tuah" girl from a viral TikTok video last year, to amass hundreds of thousands of YouTube subscribers for her cleverly named "Talk Tuah" podcast.Episodes got millions of views on the platform and millions of downloads on Spotify. At one point, as Bloomberg reports, "Talk Tuah" overtook reigning podcasts including NPR's "This American Life" and Jason and Travis Kelce's "New Heights," according to Edison Research's Top 50 podcasts for late 2024."It permeated a lot of levels of society," David Tishelman, head of Betr Media, the production company that produced "Talk Tuah," told Bloomberg.But following Welch's disastrous launch of a dubious cryptocurrency meme coin called $HAWK, the roof came crashing down. The coin hit a market cap of almost half a billion dollars in less than a day only to plummet back down within hours, bearing all the hallmarks of a classic pump-and-dump scheme.There hasn't been a proper new episode of "Talk Tuah" since then, as Welch and her legal team contend with legal challenges from investors. The mess highlights a colossal and largely self-inflicted fall from grace, which could've easily been prevented if Welch hadn't gotten involved with the cash grab in the first place.In light of countless legal threats, Welch took to X-formerly-Twitter in mid-December to promise that "I take this situation extremely seriously and want to address my fans.""I am fully cooperating with and am committed to assisting the legal team representing the individuals impacted, as well as to help uncover the truth, hold the responsible parties accountable, and resolve this matter," the statement reads.Somehow, it only got worse from there. After weeks of radio silence,a new episode allegedly "leaked"showing a teary-eyed Welch talking to crypto bull Richard "FaZe Banks" Bengston, who was willing to hear her "side of the crypto scam story."In the video which was briefly posted online before being pulled down, but not before it was ripped and reposted elsewhere Welch tried to paint herself as the victim, arguing that she was roped into the scam without her knowledge. She even claimed that her boyfriend, Kelby "Pookie" Blackwell, "lost money too.""He said, 'How you going to take my money?' He still gives me shit all the time," Welch recalled. "He says, 'I wish I had my $300 back.'""Oh my God," she said, becoming emotionally agitated, "I'm going to cry.""No, don't cry," a clearly uncomfortable Bengston offered. "Don't cry."Despite his seemingly empathetic appearance on her show, Bengston was seemingly furious after the taping. In a lengthy tweet, he alleged that the episode was released without his permission. He accused Welch of duping him into "pumping" $HAWK yet again, but failed to rip off her followers after her meme coin team "fumbled the bag, yet again."Famed blockchain skeptic Stephen "Coffeezilla" Findeisen who has garnered enough of a reputation for rooting out crypto scams for Welch to call him a "scary guy" in the latest podcast episode revealed in a video last week that he had been invited to join FaZe Banks and Welch. Findeisen had previously issued a takedown of Welch's dubious scheme on his YouTube account.According to the YouTuber, Welch was crying crocodile tears, and was trying to "rehab her image, basically, in the crypto space."Other onlookers tend to agree with that assessment."That whole podcast was full of notorious crypto scammers," one Reddit user wrote. "She was warned many many times when she said she'd launch it and laughed at people trying to help her. I do believe she knew what she was doing, and is now doing a whole PR stunt to save face for her crimes."Welch and the organizers of $HAWK are now contending with a class action lawsuit filed by investors following the meme coin disaster in December.Whether they will face any consequences for the cash grab remains to be seen.Share This Article

The CDC estimates at least 24 million illnesses, 310,000 hospitalizations, and 13,000 deaths from the flu since the start of October. At the same time, the bird flu outbreak continues to infect cattle and farmworkers. But CDC analyses that would inform people about these situations are delayed, and the CDC has cut off communication with doctors, researchers, and the World Health Organization, say doctors and public health experts.CDC right now is not reporting influenza data through the WHO global platforms, FluNet [and] FluID, that theyve been providing information [on] for many, many years, Maria Van Kerkhove, interim director of epidemic and pandemic preparedness at the WHO, said at a Feb. 12 press briefing.We are communicating with them, she added, but we havent heard anything back.On his first day in office, President Donald Trump announced the U.S. would withdraw from the WHO.A critical analysis of the seasonal flu selected for distribution through the CDCs Health Alert Network has stalled, according to people close to the CDC. They asked not to be identified because of fears of retaliation. The network, abbreviated as HAN, is the CDCs main method of sharing urgent public health information with health officials, doctors, and, sometimes, the public.A chart from that analysis, reviewed by KFF Health News, suggests that flu may be at a record high. About 7.7% of patients who visited clinics and hospitals without being admitted had flu-like symptoms in early February, a ratio higher than in four other flu seasons depicted in the graph. That includes 2003-04, when an atypical strain of flu fueled a particularly treacherous season that killed at least 153 children.Without a complete analysis, however, its unclear whether this tidal wave of sickness foreshadows a spike in hospitalizations and deaths that hospitals, pharmacies, and schools must prepare for. Specifically, other data could relay how many of the flu-like illnesses are caused by flu viruses or which flu strain is infecting people. A deeper report might also reveal whether the flu is more severe or contagious than usual.I need to know if we are dealing with a more virulent strain or a coinfection with another virus that is making my patients sicker, and what to look for so that I know if my patients are in danger, Stokes said. Delays in data create dangerous situations on the front line.Although the CDCs flu dashboard shows a surge of influenza, it doesnt include all data needed to interpret the situation. Nor does it offer the tailored advice found in HAN alerts that tells health care workers how to protect patients and the public. In 2023, for example, a report urged clinics to test patients with respiratory symptoms rather than assume cases are the flu, since other viruses were causing similar issues that year.This is incredibly disturbing, said Rachel Hardeman, a member of the Advisory Committee to the Director of the CDC. On Feb. 10, Hardeman and other committee members wrote to acting CDC Director Susan Monarez asking the agency to explain missing data, delayed studies, and potentially severe staff cuts. The CDC is vital to our nations security, the letter said.Several studies have also been delayed or remain missing from the CDCs preeminent scientific publication, the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Anne Schuchat, a former principal deputy director at the CDC, said she would be concerned if there was political oversight of scientific material: Suppressing information is potentially confusing, possibly dangerous, and it can backfire.CDC spokesperson Melissa Dibble declined to comment on delayed or missing analyses. It is not unexpected to see flu activity elevated and increasing at this time of the year, she said.A draft of one unpublished study, reviewed by KFF Health News, that has been withheld from the MMWR for three weeks describes how a milk hauler and a dairy worker in Michigan may have spread bird flu to their pet cats. The indoor cats became severely sick and died. Although the workers werent tested, the study says that one of them had irritated eyes before the cat fell ill a common bird flu symptom. That person told researchers that the pet would roll in their work clothes.After one cat became sick, the investigation reports, an adolescent in the household developed a cough. But the report says this young person tested negative for the flu, and positive for a cold-causing virus.Corresponding CDC documents summarizing the cat study and another as-yet unpublished bird flu analysis said the reports were scheduled to be published Jan. 23. These were reviewed by KFF Health News. The briefing on cats advises dairy farmworkers to remove clothing and footwear, and rinse off any animal biproduct residue before entering the household to protect others in the household, including potentially indoor-only cats.The second summary refers to the most comprehensive analysis of bird flu virus detected in wastewater in the United States.Jennifer Nuzzo, director of the Pandemic Center at Brown University, said delays of bird flu reports are upsetting because theyre needed to inform the public about a worsening situation with many unknown elements. Citing insufficient data and high uncertainty, the United Kingdom raised its assessment of the risk posed by the U.S. outbreak on dairies.Missing and delayed data causes uncertainty, Nuzzo said. It also potentially makes us react in ways that are counterproductive.Another bird flu study slated for January publication showed up in the MMWR on Feb. 13, three weeks after it was expected. It revealed that three cattle veterinarians had been unknowingly infected last year, based on the discovery of antibodies against the bird flu virus in their blood. One of the veterinarians worked in Georgia and South Carolina, states that havent reported outbreaks on dairy farms.The study provides further evidence that the United States is not adequately detecting cases in cows and people. Nuzzo said it also highlights how data can supply reassuring news. Only three of 150 cattle veterinarians had signs of prior infections, suggesting that the virus doesnt easily spread from the animals into people. More than 40 dairy workers have been infected, but they generally have had more sustained contact with sick cattle and their virus-laden milk than veterinarians.Instead, recently released reports have been about wildfires in California and Hawaii.Interesting but not urgent, Nuzzo said, considering the acute fire emergencies have ended. The bird flu outbreak, she said, is an ongoing urgent health threat for which we need up-to-the-minute information to know how to protect people.The American public is at greater risk when we dont have information on a timely basis, Schuchat said.This week, a federal judge ordered the CDC and other health agencies to restore datasets and websites that the organization Doctors for America had identified in a lawsuit as having been altered. Further, the judge ordered the agencies to identify any other resources that DFA members rely on to provide medical care and restore them by Feb. 14.In their letter, CDC advisory committee members requested an investigation into missing data and delayed reports. Hardeman, an adviser who is a health policy expert at the University of Minnesota, said the group didnt know why data and scientific findings were being withheld or removed. Still, she added, I hold accountable the acting director of the CDC, the head of HHS, and the White House.Hardeman said the Trump administration has the power to disband the advisory committee. She said the group expects that to happen but proceeded with its demands regardless.We want to safeguard the rigor of the work at the CDC because we care deeply about public health, she said. The yellow ottoman is a vintage find.After several discussions with the client, Mamedov decided to create a soft architectural and decorative foundation for the apartment. It would serve as a backdrop for more iconic design elementsthe chairs, lamps, rugs, and artwork. The architect-client collaboration was synergistic, as they studied the interior and carefully curated furniture in tandem.The hallway leading to the living area.The apartments small footprint presented some difficulties in the design phase. But at the same time, the size proved to be an important advantage: It forced us to maximize the use of the space that was available, Mamedov explains. Also, we waited for some pieces for a long time because of the current geopolitical situation, and not everything we wanted was readily available. For example, they waited an extra six months to get Verner Pantons Hive lamp and install it. We also searched for a long time for the most suitable dining table for this space, Mamedov says.The living area features vibrant colors and designer pieces. I divided the apartment into several blocks, defining them with colors, furnishings, and fabrics. To soften the space, we introduced rounded walls and arched openings. We also added mirrored elements in the kitchen area and on the hidden bathroom door to amplify the rooms, explains Mamedov.The custom kitchen in wood and white is flanked by a mirrored wall that visually amplifies the space.Through careful research, a lively, light, and colorful scene took shape. Color was introduced through textiles and furniture: a rug by Jaime Hayon, a chair by Ekstrem, and a custom dining table made from recycled plastic bottle caps. We chose a warm shade of Jotun paint for the walls and ceiling. We decided not to use parquet or tiles, but concrete the same color as the walls. This dissolved the boundaries between the different spaces and created an overall fluid feel, Mamedov says. The result? A cozy and comfortable atmosphere, wherein the space appears even lighter and softer. To make the environment warmer and more appealing to the sense of touch, we made part of the kitchen out of natural solid wood, Mamedov continues.Every corner of the house has been carefully optimized to maximize functionality and make the most of the space that was available.The bedroom opens onto the living room. On the modular nightstand by Kartell sits a Verner Panton flower vase for &Tradition and a Pantop Verpan portable lamp.
