  • Apple terminates UK data protection after government overreach
    www.computerworld.com
As of 10 a.m. (ET) today, Apple is no longer offering new users in the UK the chance to enableAdvanced Data Protection. Essentially, anyone who now wants to enable the feature to protect their data against criminal or state surveillance or exfiltration will no longer be able to do so.The move appears to be a direct response to the foolish and supremely dangerous demand by the UK government toundermine personal data security on an international scale. The UK used its Investigatory Powers Act to demand Apple secretly break encryption protecting data held in iCloud with the creation of a backdoor into that data. Rather than comply, Apple has instead switched off the encryption.Advanced Data Protection (ADP) gives Apples users end-to-end encryption across nine iCloud data categories that are not otherwise so encrypted, These include iCloud Backup, iCloud Drive, Photos, Notes, Reminders, Safari Bookmarks, Siri Shortcuts, Voice Memos, Wallet Passes and Freeform. Other iCloud categories, including iCloud Keychain, Health, and iMessage, will remain encrypted. What this means to UK usersIn a statement, the company said: Apple can no longer offer Advanced Data Protection (ADP) in the United Kingdom to new users and current UK users will eventually need to disable this security feature. ADP protects iCloud data with end-to-end encryption, which means the data can only be decrypted by the user who owns it, and only on their trusted devices. We are gravely disappointed that the protections provided by ADP will not be available to our customers in the UK, given the continuing rise of data breaches and other threats to customer privacy. Enhancing the security of cloud storage with end-to-end encryption is more urgent than ever before. What the change means is that if you have not already enabled ADP on your device, you will receive a message warning you that the feature is no longer available to new users in the UK. It gets worse, of course. If you happen to be a UK customer who is already using ADP, you can eventually expect to be told to disable the feature in order to continue using your iCloud account. Apple evidently doesnt want to have to do this; the company knows full well that in the current threat landscape, it makes sense to encrypt all of your data which is why it introduced ADP in the first place.A huge act of self-harm by the UKSpeaking to the BBC, online security expert Professor Alan Woodward called this a very disappointing development, slamming the government for an act of self-harm. All the UK government has achieved is to weaken online security and privacy for UK based users.Unfortunately, the incompetent UK government does not understand this. Its a huge indictment of UK officials in the Home Office, who have effectively given the worlds authoritarians a green light to demand access to peoples data.As anyone who understands digital security knows,no one is safe unless everyone is safe, and the UK has justmade everyone less safe.Fortunately, the ADP system remains available in the rest of the world. It is likely the decision to disable the system in the UK follows the recent UK attempt to demand access to data held in iCloud by anyone in the world. Sadly, we cant be certain this is the case as, under the law the government used to demand this, we have no right to be told. That means we do not know the full extent to which Apple has been forced to open up to state surveillance by UK authorities. We do not know how the government is handling that access and have not been told how it will affect users. Nor do we know the extent to which the government is attempting to secure global access to iCloud data, threatening the interests of other nations in the act.All we do know is that the government is guilty of an authoritarian overreach to the detriment of its own national security. Senators in the US are alreadythreatening to re-evaluate intelligence sharing agreements with the UKunless it ceases this digital overreach.Apple will continue to fightAs I wrote when this foolish demand was made, far from making people safer, the UK demand threatens everyone: Ultimately, privacy is a human right, not a feature, and the removal of such rights should at least be a matter of public and democratic debate, which it has not been. As it stands, this UK overreach should be opposed not only by civil rights advocates, but by anyone else who uses or provides online services of any kind, and certainly by any nation that does protect privacy among its citizens. The fight for privacy is not over. Apple will continue to push for it. In the statement, the company stressed: Apple remains committed to offering our users the highest level of security for their personal data and are hopeful that we will be able to do so in the future in the United Kingdom. As we have said many times before, we have never built a backdoor or master key to any of our products or services, and we never will. You can follow me on social media! • Apple turns off data protection in the UK rather than comply with backdoor mandate
    appleinsider.com
Rather than comply with a UK order to make a backdoor into encrypted data, Apple has announced it will no longer offer Advanced Data Protection in that country.UK ParliamentIn 2024, the UK revamped its UK Investigatory Powers Act of 2016 to give itself the authority to legally and secretly compel Apple to break the end-to-end encryption that its security and privacy depends on. Despite bipartisan protests from the US, the UK issued the order and Apple cannot continue to operate its end-to-end encryption without breaking the law.Instead of allowing the UK backdoor access to encrypted data, however, Apple has announced that it is switching off the encryption. This technically complies with the law, but means Apple does not create a backdoor that the UK or other bad actors could use. Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums

    archinect.com
Construction of the two-building Infinity Tower project in Shanghai from Studio Libeskind is progressing in the citys Free-Trade Zone. The symmetrical towers, whose architectural form resembles a dance of two cranes, are connected by a 15th-floor skybridge containing an open viewing platform and feature an articulated facade. The project equals a combined floor area of just under 829,000 square feet (77,000 square meters). Together, they stand as a "grand arch" framing entry into the Flying Fish commercial complex. Libeskind was also recently announced as the lead architect for a Holocaust remembrance museumproject at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Poland.

  • Jack of All Trades or Master of One? Architectures Identity Crisis and The Myth of Specialization
    architizer.com
Architects: Want to have your project featured? Showcase your work throughArchitizerand sign up for ourinspirational newsletters. To specialize or not to specialize? This is a question that many architects have been struggling with for the past decade. In a market where the word niche has perhaps become the key to success, professionals in many industries attempt to drill down on their skills and become specialists in their respective fields. In the case of the architect, however, specialization might not be the straightforward answer for a successful career.Architecture is, by default, an interdisciplinary profession, where architects must consider many variables and broaden their knowledge in different topics to carry out a project. Consequently, they often have trouble communicating their value. Frankly, the phrase the jack of all trades, master of none, still significantly affects perception, especially in a market that seeks experts who can solve specific problems. More specifically, specialists are often seen as irreplaceable, commanding higher fees for their rare expertise in a particular field. For example, an architect specializing in passive house design or one dedicated exclusively to working with concrete is more likely to be trusted with such projects rather than a generalist with broader but less focused experience.Still, is the distinction between specialists and generalists truly so clear-cut? By examining a series of architectural practices some renowned for their expertise in specific niches and others whose careers span diverse scales, typologies and contexts we can explore the nuances of the architectural profession and the evolving nature of specialization.James-Simon-Galerie by David Chipperfield Architects, Berlin, GermanyDavid Chipperfield Architects are known for undertaking sensitive restoration and adaptive reuse projects. The James-Simon-Galerie, for example, which serves as the new entrance for Museum Island in Berlin, completes the physical connection between the Kupfergraben canal and Neues Museum. The projects architectural language adopts existing elements from Museum Island such as built topography, colonnades and outdoor staircases. In parallel, reconstituted stone and natural stone aggregate compliments the traditional limestone and sandstone found in the rest of the buildings, becoming a contemporary faade reinterpretation.National Museum of Qatar by Ateliers Jean Nouvel, Al Corniche Street, Doha, QatarAteliers Jean Nouvel works are also highly contextual. The practice refuses to adopt a signature design approach, working in a range of projects from skyscrapers to concert halls and museums adapting designs to the respective cultural and environmental context. Specifically, the National Museum of Qatar is a project that emerged from the culture, physical context and untold stories of the Persian Gulf. The design intent was to give concrete expression to Qatars evolving identity whilst celebrating its rich history.Ouagadougou Parliament House by Kr Architecture, Ouagadougou, Burkina FasoKr Architecture is a small firm based in Berlin, founded in 2005, specializing in socially conscious, community-driven architecture using local materials. The practice seeks to create economic and ecological building solutions for local situations in a global context. The Ouagadougou Parliament House in Burkina Faso was a project that signified the countrys new democratic values of transparency, openness and equality as well as become a catalyst for growth and development for the capital city. The design was inspired by local traditions, needs, resources and climates, opting for sustainable practices such as rainwater collection and solar shading. Finally, the building is successfully integrated within the wider community, providing a space for gathering, observation and public dialogue.Taipei Performing Arts Centre by OMA, Taipei City, TaiwanSpeaking of urban impact, OMA is a leading architectural practice that mixes theory, urbanism and diverse project types, including public, commercial, cultural as well as experimental architecture. For instance, the Taipei Performing Arts Centre in Taiwan, revisits the functional and spatial properties of performance centers, suggesting alternative architecture for theatrical experimentation. By redefining the traditional theatre typologies stage, proscenium, auditorium the design draws from the immediate context and engages with the diverse public, operating as a tool rather than a landmark for Taiwans theatre production. These four examples are a mix of specialists and generalists architects. Still, regardless of whether David Chipperfield Architects are renowned for their adaptive reuse projects or how OMA are considered a broader, more wide-ranging practice, they all combine interdisciplinary knowledge with focused expertise. In fact, the traditional debate between generalist versus specialist architects feels increasingly outdated a shift which aligns with the design thinking and business strategy concept of the T-Shaped professional. Architecture will never become a profession that can be broken down in smaller, isolated parts. Instead, the architects advantage is their ability to combine broad, cross-disciplinary knowledge with deep expertise in a specific niche. Ultimately, each professions trajectory is determined by its practitioners and interdisciplinarity is perhaps the biggest weapon in an architects arsenal.Architects: Want to have your project featured? Monster Hunter Wilds Special Event, is slated to go live on February 22 at 17:00 JST.While we dont expect any major reveals to take place during the livestream, Capcom has stated that it will be the first time we get to see the arena field the location where arena hunts will take place for monsters that have been captured or for other special quests. It is also worth noting that, since it will be a live special event featuring a Japanese host and fans, it might not feature English translations.Monster Hunter Wilds is coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on February 27. Capcom recently give us a full chart that explains exactly what time the game will go live in various regions and across various platforms. Pre-loads for PC and Xbox Series X/S will be available on February 25, while PS5 players will have to wait until 48 hours before the game launches on the system to start pre-loading.While Capcom has been proactive in talking about Monster Hunter Wilds and revealing some of the monsters that players will get to fight, it hasnt yet confirmed what kind of endgame content the title will feature. Tsujimoto has, however, confirmed that we wont get to see Siege hunts in the upcoming game at launch.Rather than including 16-player raids like we saw in Monster Hunter World and Iceborne with Kulve Taroth and Safijiiva, Monster Hunter Wilds will instead focus more on higher-end versions of its standard 4-player hunts. Tsujimoto didnt discount the idea of bringing Siege hunts in future updates, however. He just stated that there are no current plans for it.We do know, thanks to the recently-released launch trailer, that the first major post-launch update for Monster Hunter Wilds will be adding Mizutsune to its roster. The monster, having originally made its debut back in Monster Hunter Generations, had skipped World and Iceborne before coming back with Rise. Some of the most recently-confirmed monsters include quite a few returning ones, including Gore Magala and Nerscylla, both of which first appeared in Monster Hunter 4. We also have confirmations for a host of returning monsters, including Blangonga, Congalala, and Gravios. While players are getting ready for Monster Hunter Wilds, several of them have seemingly been revisiting Monster Hunter World, Iceborne, Rise and Sunbreak. Capcom announced earlier this month that Monster Hunter World had sold 28.10 million copies as of the end of December 2024. Monster Hunter Rise, on the other hand, has sold 16.70 million copies. For more details about Monster Hunter Wilds, check out how its story will be focused on the relationship between hunters, nature, and monsters. You can also read about how the full game will be seeing changes from the beta, including weapon hitstops being closer to where players would like them.

  • Gothic Remake Gets New Video Showcasing 22 Minutes of Uninterrupted Gameplay
    gamingbolt.com
While Alkimia Entertainments remake of classic RPG Gothic is still under development, the studio has released some new footage that gives us 22 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay of the game. Released through IGN, the video gives us a glimpse at some of the early gameplay from the Gothic remake. Check it out below. The description for the gameplay video also reveals that it was recorded at the highest cinematic settings possible at 4K, while running on a PC with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 GPU.Things start off quite slow with a long conversation between the protagonist and Diego, before the player then has to delve deeper into the mines and take on early-game enemies like molerats. Much like the original, the Gothic remake also rewards exploration with new items and equipment. On leaving the mine, the nameless protagonist finds himself exploring a broken-down path along the side of a hill before running into a hunter named Drax. The conversation with the hunter ends with him making a deal with the protagonist to help him with a hunt in return for a place to camp. The gameplay video highlights one of the key aspects of Gothic: the brutal combat. Death will come easy to players that set out unprepared in the RPG, and despite early-game enemies seemingly being weak, it only takes a single mistake before the player has to hope they have a recent save file.Another key aspect of Gothic in the form of the emphasis on socio-political happenings in its world is also showcased in the video. As they travel, players will have to figure out just who they can trust, and what characters they should be weary of. Players will also have to convince various expert combatants to train them in order to appropriately level up.Earlier this month, the developers behind the Gothic remake at Alkimia Entertainment spoke about what makes the seminal RPG special to them. Various members of the development team, including art director Daniel Candil, music composer and sound designer Kai Rosenkranz, and senior game designer Hector Fuster, spoke about their favourite things from the original Gothic.Alkimia Entertainment was announced as the developer for the Gothic remake back in March 2021. The studio is a relatively new one, with no other titles under its belt as of yet. What was amazing to me the first time that I played Gothic was how you could solve a lot of situations by taking advantage of everyone, said technical artist Roger Llovera. Everyone would take advantage of you, of course, but then you have chances where you can take advantage of a character killing a Scavenger for you.A gameplay trailer was released back in August 2024 giving us our first proper look at the primary setting of Gothic the Valley of Mines. The trailer also showcased some new story content that will be completely original to the remake, along with its more detailed take on NPCs and new gameplay enhancements.Gothic was originally announced all the way back in 2020, and is currently in development for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Publisher THQ Nordic has also stated that players should be on the lookout for the Gothic remake during the upcoming Steam Next Fest between February 24 and March 3.
