  • Powerplay 2: Logitech made its magic mousepad cheaper instead of better
    www.theverge.com
Ive never reviewed a perfect product, but Logitechs Powerplay Wireless Charging System comes close. For over three years and counting, Ive never even had to think about charging my wireless mouse. Its so dead simple, it feels like magic, and its shame that most people probably cant afford it at $120.The good news: Logitech is releasing a new $100 version in March, called the Powerplay 2, and its just as easy to set up. Plug in mousepad, snap a magnetic Charging Coin into the base of your mouse, then put mouse on mousepad to continuously charge. The bad news: Its only $20 cheaper, yet it feels like Logitech made its mousepad more than $20 cheaper to hit that goal. The mousepad does come with improvements. Logitech boasts it has a 15 percent wider charging area and is thinner at just 3.5mm, and thats what I see with my review unit. Now, as long as the entirety of my G502 Lightspeed mouse is resting within any corner of the mousepad, the charging indicator lights up, which wasnt quite true of the original. My calipers do read 3.5mm when Im measuring the charging base and its thin fabric mousing surface together. You do still get this little mouse detection / charging indicator light. Image: LogitechBut my calipers also show the charging base is exactly the same 2.7mm thickness as before, and the old mousepad wasnt all that much thicker: just 4.3mm before vs. 3.5mm now, a difference I do not feel. And do you leave your mouse all the way at the corners of your mousepad? Again, Ive spent over three years charging this mouse on the old mousepad without even thinking about it. I never bother to reposition my mouse on my old Powerplay to make sure its charging; I just drop it when Im done using it, and Ive never once run out of charge. What do we lose with the Powerplay 2? First, while Logitech has ditched the old micro-USB cable, were not getting USB-C. Instead, Logitechs opted for a fixed cable, so I cant as easily take the mousepad off my desk on days I need more space on my desk. The big one: theres no more wireless mouse receiver built into the Powerplay 2, a feature I found handy with the original. Now, my mouse requires two full-size USB ports instead of one because I still have to leave the mouses dongle plugged into my PC, too. I cant leave the dongle stowed in the mouse for grab-and-go travel, and I cant leave it in my laptop and switch between laptop and desktop anymore by turning the mouse on and off and yanking the Powerplays plug.Theres also no more programmable RGB light inside the Logitech G logo. I dont terribly miss that, since I dont sync up gamer lights. But the dull black Logitech G feels cheaper; before, the RGB was at least a nice reassuring reminder that my mousepad was properly receiving USB power and ready for action.Compatible mice include the Pro X Superlight series, the Pro Wireless, the G502 wireless mice, the G309, the G703 and G903. Image: LogitechAnd, while I do like the new thinner mousepad that comes with the Powerplay 2, which looks like it might not delaminate from its backing as easily as the original (its the one piece of my Powerplay that has deteriorated over the past three years), the original Powerplay came with two mousepads (one hard, one cloth) in the box. Now, you get the one.(Also, just as FYI, the new Powerplay 2 charging coin doesnt seem to work with the original pad and vice versa. You cant mix and match those parts.)I tried hard to get Logitech to show me more benefits, because the originals one of my favorite products. Perhaps this ones so much easier for Logitech to produce that itll offer some great discounts, or sell amazing bundles after launch? Or perhaps that 15 percent larger charging area will come in handy for possible additional supercapacitor mice thatd react worse than battery mice if they arent getting reliably fed, though the current supercap G309 seems to work fine with the original Powerplay in my early tests.Logitech wouldnt comment on future supercap products, wouldnt hint at sales, and wouldnt promise its own bundles though Logitech does anticipate retailers will be offering bundles shortly after launch, according to Logitech senior global marketing manager Andrew Siminoff. The original Powerplay is no longer in stock at major retailers, so I expect it will soon fetch a premium price on eBay. But the Powerplay 2 still seems like a good product that achieves the core goal. Fingers crossed that come Black Friday, well be able to buy a combo pack with it and Logitechs cheapest compatible mouse that G309 for under $100 in total. The Powerplay 2 should be available on Amazon and Logitechs site on March 11th.See More:

  • The Best Steam Deck Chargers for an Extra Power Boost
    www.ign.com
The original Steam Deck has a notoriously terrible battery life; the Steam Deck OLED made marginal improvements, but it still won't last all day. Youll want a reliable USB-C charger close by to make sure you dont run out of juice during pivotal game moments. Our favorite charger for Steam Deck is the compact and speedy Anker 715 Charger. Whether youre after the best power bank for charging on the go, something cheap to leave in the car or office, or a wall charger rocking extra ports to top off multiple devices simultaneously, weve got you covered. Finding an option that squeezes out the max charging speeds of the Steam Deck, like a 65W option, is ideal, especially if you plan on playing while charging. A removable USB-C, extra ports, and portability are also nice. Weve found five of the best Steam Deck chargers for home or travel that check all the nice-to-have boxes. Plus, all of our picks work perfectly with most other handheld gaming PCs, phones, and more. 1. Anker 715 ChargerBest OverallBest OverallAnker 715 ChargerSee it at AmazonProduct SpecificationsTotal Output65WPorts1 x USB-C (65W)Size1.65 x 1.42 x 1.74Weight0.24 poundsPROSCapable of 65W charging speedsCompact dimensionsCONSNeed to purchase USB-C cable separatelySure, you can get by with the Steam Decks included charger, but it outputs a max of 45W, and the USB-C cable isnt detachable, making it less portable. Ankers 715 Charger is much more compact, measuring only 1.65x1.42x1.74 inches with prongs that fold into the body, so you can easily toss it into a bag. It manages 65W while keeping those small dimensions thanks to GaN II technology, ensuring you get the fastest charging speeds out of your Steam Deck. Of course, the Anker 715 isn't limited to charging your Steam Deck. It gets the best smartphones, tablets, and more topped up in no time, although youre limited to charging a single device at a time with its single USB-C port. It also doesnt include a USB-C to USB-C cable. So unless you already have one, youll want to grab a cable that supports high charging speeds. This two-pack of USB-C cables from Anker is a great inexpensive option.2. For under $20, it delivers a 45W max charging speed, same as the original charger, bringing your Steam Deck back to full in just 2.5 hours. The Jsaux 45W USB-C Power Delivery Charger has an attached durable and flexible USB-C cable coming in at 5ft or 10ft. The charger also has a 90-degree USB-C adapter, making it more comfortable to game while charging. This charger works with a handful of other USB-C devices, like your Nintendo Switch, too.Jsaux also makes our overall favorite Steam Deck docking station if you'd prefer to charge your handheld that way.3. It looks like your typical power bank, but it has foldable prongs that reach 65W as a wall charger to top off your Steam Deck and other devices. It uses a GaN-powered charging system for better efficiency and thermal protection. Beyond having a USB-C charger for your Steam Deck, a second USB-C and USB-A ports are available. However, you wont get the 65W max speeds when multiple devices are plugged in. If the 10,000mAh battery is charging your Steam Deck, it taps out at 30W, so dont expect your portable gaming PC to be charged quickly. You should still get over one full charge to your Steam Deck with this power bank. 4. Anker 737 Power BankBest Power BankBest Power BankAnker 737 Power BankSee it at AmazonProduct SpecificationsTotal Output140WPorts2 x USB-C (140W), 1 x USB-A (18W)Battery Capacity24,000mAhSize6.13 x 2.15 x 1.95Weight1.39 poundsPROSCapable of 140W outputMassive 24,000mAh battery capacityCONSBulkyIf you spend most of your time playing your Steam Deck on the go, a power bank is more useful than a typical wall charger, and the Anker 737 is an absolute beast of an option. The 24,000 mAh capacity just under the TSAs lithium-ion battery max limit can charge up your Steam Deck about four times, adding hours of extra playtime when youre away from an outlet. The high-capacity battery is paired with a 140W output when using one of the two USB-C ports available. Neither the Steam Deck or Steam Deck OLED will hit those wild charging speeds, but MacBooks and other laptops can take advantage. An additional USB-A means you can charge three devices simultaneously with a total combined output of 140W. The battery bank itself is also capable of recharging at that high speed thanks to Power Delivery 3.1 and bi-directional technology. Anker even includes a USB-C to USB-C cable thatll work seamlessly with the Steam Deck, and a handy display shows the input and output power. 5. Ugreen Nexode 200W 6-Port GaN ChargerBest USB HubBest USB HubUgreen Nexode 200W 6-Port GaN ChargerSee it at AmazonProduct SpecificationsTotal Output200WPorts2 x USB-C (100W), 2 x USB-C (65W), 2 x USB-A (10W)Size4.3 x 3.6 x 2.0Weight1.14 poundsPROSIncludes six charging ports, including four USB-CUSB-C ports hit up to 100W charging speedsCONSExpensiveThe Ugreen Nexode 200W 6-Port GaN Charger can charge up to six devices simultaneously with a maximum output of 200W. This charger is equipped with four USB-C ports and two USB-A ports; two of those USB-C ports can deliver 100W charging speeds, far exceeding the 65W the Steam Deck is capable of. But itll charge up the best iPads or even some gaming laptops in no time flat. Ugreen also includes a USB-C cable capable of 100W to make the most of this charger. Of course, when multiple electronics are connected, charging speeds will slow. Even with all of its ports, the Ugreen Nexode 200W 6-Port GaN Charger keeps compact dimensions, making it a great USB charging hub to take on the go. Four advanced GaN chips help keep the size down as well as improve energy efficiency and heat generation on the device. Just be prepared to pay a premium for such a capable charger. How to Choose the Best Steam Deck Charger When deciding on a Steam Deck charger, there are several factors to consider, with the price and inclusion of at least one USB-C port being the most important. You can find budget options for under $30 that work great, but you'll most likely be limited to only one port. Upping the budget usually leads to additional ports and faster charging speeds with a more durable build and additional features like GaN technology, the latest Power Delivery, and smart displays. The Steam Deck comes with a 45W charger and attached USB-C cable, so at a minimum, youll want a charger that hits those same charging speeds. A 65W option seems to be the sweet spot, as youll get to squeeze the fastest charging speeds out of the Steam Deck, even while its in use, using about 15W while playing games. Youre free to get a higher wattage charger, but the Steam Deck wont charge any faster. If youre looking for an option that lets you charge multiple devices simultaneously, having an even higher max output can make a world of difference for quick chargesBeyond a USB-C wall charger, power banks or hybrid options are great for those who play their Steam Deck on the go. At a minimum, youll want a power bank equipped with a 10,000mAh battery or more. Again, a higher wattage option will also ensure your Steam Deck is topped up quickly. Adding this extra functionality means these chargers tend to be bigger and bulkier. After youve decided on a charger, youll want to ensure youve got a USB-C cable that can charge your Steam Deck at the top speeds. Or maybe youd like to charge your Steam Deck and use it with other peripherals like the best keyboard, mouse, or gaming monitor? Consider getting one of the best Steam Deck docks instead.Steam Deck Charging FAQHow long does the Steam Deck battery last? Unfortunately, the original LCD Steam Decks battery is only 40Whr and rated to last at a maximum of 7-8 hours. In our review, God of War, at its default settings, fully depleted the battery in 90 minutes. Lowering the frame rate and other settings can help with battery life, but having a wall charger or power bank is an absolute necessity. The Steam Deck OLED is more efficient and offers a slightly larger 50Whr battery, allowing for a maximum of 12 hours of playtime. Valve claims it gets 3050% better battery life compared to the LCD option. This fact was confirmed in our testing of the OLED model, as when playing Cyberpunk 2077, it lasted a full hour longer than on the LCD Steam Deck. What is the maximum charging speed of the Steam Deck? The top charging speed the Steam Deck is capable of achieving is 65W. Using a higher watt output charger is perfectly fine, the Steam Deck will only charge at the rate it can handle. It can also charge with lower watt chargers, the recharge time will just be longer.Danielle is a freelance writer for IGN based in Los Angeles focused on keeping buying guides up to date. • FatalRAT Phishing Attacks Target APAC Industries Using Chinese Cloud Services
    thehackernews.com
Feb 25, 2025Ravie LakshmananCybercrime / MalwareVarious industrial organizations in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region have been targeted as part of phishing attacks designed to deliver a known malware called FatalRAT."The threat was orchestrated by attackers using legitimate Chinese cloud content delivery network (CDN) myqcloud and the Youdao Cloud Notes service as part of their attack infrastructure," Kaspersky ICS CERT said in a Monday report."The attackers employed a sophisticated multi-stage payload delivery framework to ensure evasion of detection."The activity has singled out government agencies and industrial organizations, particularly manufacturing, construction, information technology, telecommunications, healthcare, power and energy, and large-scale logistics and transportation, in Taiwan, Malaysia, China, Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Singapore, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Hong Kong. The lure attachments used in the email messages suggest that the phishing campaign is designed to go after Chinese-speaking individuals. It's worth noting that FatalRAT campaigns have previously leveraged bogus Google Ads as a distribution vector. In September 2023, Proofpoint documented another email phishing campaign that propagated various malware families such as FatalRAT, Gh0st RAT, Purple Fox, and ValleyRAT.An interesting aspect of both intrusion sets is that they have primarily targeted Chinese-language speakers and Japanese organizations. Some of these activities have been attributed to a threat actor tracked as Silver Fox APT.The starting point of the latest attack chain is a phishing email containing a ZIP archive with a Chinese-language filename, which, when launched, launches the first-stage loader that, in turn, makes a request to Youdao Cloud Notes in order to retrieve a DLL file and a FatalRAT configurator. For its part, the configurator module downloads the contents of another note from note.youdao[.]com so as to access the configuration information. It's also engineered to open a decoy file in an effort to avoid raising suspicion. The DLL, on the other hand, is a second-stage loader that's responsible for downloading and installing the FatalRAT payload from a server ("myqcloud[.]com") specified in the configuration, while displaying a fake error message about a problem running the application. An important hallmark of the campaign includes the use of DLL side-loading techniques to advance the multi-stage infection sequence and load the FatalRAT malware."The threat actor uses a black and white method where the actor leverages the functionality of legitimate binaries to make the chain of events look like normal activity," Kaspersky said. "The attackers also used a DLL side-loading technique to hide the persistence of the malware in legitimate process memory.""FatalRAT performs 17 checks for an indicator that the malware executes in a virtual machine or sandbox environment. If any of the checks fail, the malware stops executing."It also terminates all instances of the rundll32.exe process, and gathers information about the system and the various security solutions installed in it, before awaiting further instructions from a command-and-control (C2) server.FatalRAT is a feature-packed trojan that's equipped to log keystrokes, corrupt Master Boot Record (MBR), turn on/off screen, search and delete user data in browsers like Google Chrome and Internet Explorer, download additional software like AnyDesk and UltraViewer, perform file operations, and start/stop a proxy, and terminate arbitrary processes. It's currently not known who is behind the attacks using FatalRAT, although the tactical and instrumentation overlaps with other campaigns suggest that "they all reflect different series of attacks that are somehow related." Kaspersky has assessed with medium confidence that a Chinese-speaking threat actor is behind it."FatalRAT's functionality gives an attacker almost unlimited possibilities for developing an attack: spreading over a network, installing remote administration tools, manipulating devices, stealing, and deleting confidential information," the researchers said."The consistent use of services and interfaces in Chinese at various stages of the attack, as well as other indirect evidence, indicates that a Chinese-speaking actor may be involved."Found this article interesting? • Artform completes two semis on brownfield site in Manchester
    www.architectsjournal.co.uk
Replacing a former single-storey dwelling which was in a poor state of repair, the two new houses are mirror images of each other. Each house is laid out over three levels. On the ground floor, the open-plan kitchen/dining/living spaces at the rear overlook private rear gardens, with a stepped faade incorporating a feature window seat and brick canopy.Four bedrooms are accommodated on the upper two floors, alongside a workspace/office on the top floor.AdvertisementArchitects viewWe were approached by the client to rethink a previous planning consent on the site and provide a more creative and contemporary solution that better suited the familys needs and maximised the sites potential. Our proposal was to demolish the existing, out-dated single storey building and replace this with two carefully considered replacement dwellings more suited to the scale of the plot and the typology of the neighbouring properties. Working closely with the client, who intended to live in one of the properties, the project provided us with the opportunity to consider how a typical 1930s Mancunian semi-detached house type could be adapted and re-worked to suit modern-day family living. It was important for us to find a solution that would help stitch together the existing street elevation and provide an engaging new building for the infill site. The proposal aims to improve the setting with regards to design, detail and quality and offers a modern alternative to the pastiche or bland family houses so often seen on larger developments. The internals layouts provide well-proportioned accommodation with high levels of natural light that open out to the garden at the rear. It was the intention to create inspiring and comforting spaces throughout the proposal. The architectural response to the site takes reference from the surrounding vernacular. The buff brick modelling to the elevations reflects the form and character of neighbouring houses, where a variety of window sizes, bay windows, dormers, recessed elements and single storey extensions can be found. This contemporary interpretation of the local vernacular helps to ground the scheme into the site while providing a distinct identity of its own and an unashamedly modern addition to the streetscape.Full credit goes to our wonderful client for project managing the development on site and at times single-handedly building out the scheme. We are delighted to see the family now enjoying their new home and the two houses positively contributing the streetscape.Simon Jewell, co-founder and director, Artform ArchitectsClients viewWe purchased the site with a view to creating two new houses; a bespoke family home for ourselves and a second property we could rent out or sell to generate extra revenue. While the site already had consent for a pair of semis, we wanted to create something more imaginative and with its own identity. Having seen Artforms work previously, we appointed them with a brief to design a home that met the practical needs of family life while giving us something with a contemporary edge that had its own character while still respecting the nature of the street. We soon established a good working relationship with the Artform team and the design process was both creative and enjoyable, allowing us to always feel fully involved in how the project developed. The end-result is a pair of houses that we are incredibly proud of, especially given the amount of time and effort we put in during construction. The interior spaces are filled with light and provide a series of framed views to the outside. It has given us exactly we we hoped for as a family, so much so that we now plan to have our parents move in next door rather than rent or sell.Private client Source:Artform ArchitectsProject dataLocation Stretford, ManchesterStart on site May 2022CompletionJuly 24Gross internal floor area 358m2Gross (internal + external) floor area 537m2Form of contractConstruction managementConstruction cost 500,000Construction cost per m2 1,397Architect Artform ArchitectsClient PrivateStructural engineer DYSEProject manager ClientPrincipal designer Artform ArchitectsCDM co-ordinator Artform ArchitectsApproved building inspector Approved InspectorsMain contractor N/ACAD software used Revit
