In alliance with V2 Group, Italian 3D printer manufacturer Caracol has developed a 6-meter-long monolithic catamaran using its robotic 3D printing technology.Designed for open-water use, the project serves as a test case for whether large-format additive manufacturing can be scaled for industrial boat production. The process involved assessing each stage of manufacturing, from material selection to printing optimization and post-processing.Unlike conventional boatbuilding, which relies on molds and extensive manual labor, 3D printing offers a way to produce complex, customizable designs while reducing material waste, the Italian manufacturer explained in a press release. In addition, the companies involved see this as an opportunity to explore a more efficient and adaptable approach to vessel construction.3D printed catamaran sailing in the water. This catamaran was developed with a focus not only on producing a single vessel but also on examining how the entire process could be refined for broader application. Both Caracol and V2 Group plan to continue advancing this method, working toward a model that could allow for wider adoption of 3D printing in the sector. While challenges remain in industrializing the process, the companies aim to develop a commercially viable approach to boat manufacturing through further research and development.3D printed boats have been making headlines for the past few years. Back in 2020, Moi Composites unveiled what it called the worlds first 3D printed boat made from continuous fiberglass thermoset material at the 2020 Genoa Boat Show.Known as MAMBO, the 6.5-meter vessel was first introduced at Formnext 2019 and built using Continuous Fiber Manufacturing (CFM), a robotic 3D printing process designed to reinforce composite materials. Weighing 800 kg and powered by a 115 cv engine, MAMBO took two months to complete and later earned recognition from Monaco Yachting Cluster and the 2020 Mark Challenge.More recently, global engineering company Renishaw partnered with INEOS Britannia to 3D print key components for the teams AC75 racing yacht, which competed in the 37th Americas Cup in Barcelona.Using its RenAM 500Q metal 3D printer, Renishaw produced custom parts, including the bowsprit end detail, foil flap fairings, and outhaul sheave box, helping to optimize weight and structural performance. The company also provided position encoders to enhance the yachts precision. Led by Sir Ben Ainslie INEOS Britannia aimed to win the Americas Cup for the first time, having secured a spot in the Louis Vuitton Cup semi-finals.Close-up of INEOS Britannias 3D printing-powered racing yacht. During Formnext 2024, the Italian manufacturer unveiled Vipra AM, its latest large-format additive manufacturing (LFAM) platform. Designed for large-scale metal 3D printing, Vipra AM integrates robotic deposition technology and automation to enhance industrial production. The platform features two configurations: Vipra XQ, which uses Plasma Arc Deposition for high-precision aerospace and energy components, and Vipra XP, optimized for lightweight metals in automotive and marine industries. Caracol emphasized Vipras hybrid manufacturing capabilities, aiming to reduce waste and improve efficiency. One year before this, Caracol showcased major upgrades to its Heron AM robotic 3D printing platform at Formnext 2023, introducing the High Versatility (HV) extruder, an expanded Eidos Manufacturing Software Suite, and a multi-end-effector control cabinet.Designed for precision and speed, the HV extruder supports large-scale applications across industries like marine, architecture, and tooling. The updated software suite incorporated IoT capabilities, enabling remote monitoring and predictive maintenance, while the new control cabinet streamlined multi-extruder management.What3D printing trendsshould you watch out for in 2025?How is thefuture of 3D printingshaping up?To stay up to date with the latest 3D printing news, dont forget to subscribe to the 3D Printing Industry newsletter or follow us on Twitter, or like our page on Facebook. While youre here, why not subscribe to our Youtube channel? Just at home doing up or undoing rust nuts and bolts as it is screwed, this is perfect for those heavy, stubborn jobs. Show more How did I choose these electric screwdrivers? When testing and reviewing the best electric screwdrivers to curate this list, I weighted the following factors:Power: I've looked at a range of different electric screwdrivers, and the primary difference between them is power. I want a precision screwdriver to have enough power to loosen and tighten tiny screws found in things like smartphones and laptops but not so much power that it can cause damage. At the other end, I want all the power that a tool can deliver to free up rusty, stuck fasteners.Battery life: I need my tool to be good for more than one screw. Unbelievably, I tested numerous electric screwdrivers that couldn't cope with more than a few screws before needing a recharge. That's just no good.Durability: I tested each of the electric screwdrivers here on several hundred fasteners -- screws, nuts and bolts -- to help filter out the tools that are going to let you down.Quality of accessories: If the electric screwdriver is supplied with screwdriver bits, I want these to be high-quality parts that won't break or damage fasteners.Value: Tools are one of those things where you can spend crazy money on things. While this might pay off if you are a tradesperson and you use and rely on them daily, the average home user can get away with something a bit more budget-friendly. With these picks, you can rest assured that you're getting the best bang for your buck. Show more What size bits to electric screwdrivers take? Most screwdrivers take standard 1/4-inch hex bits, and these are widely available. Note, however, that precision screwdrivers take the much smaller 4 mm bits. Show more Are electric screwdrivers more powerful than regular handheld screwdrivers? Regular electric screwdrivers max out at about the same power that you could deliver by hand, and that's because the limiting factor is how tightly you can grip the screwdriver.Because of its different shape and the fact that it uses an impacting hammer action to work the fastener, the impact driver is capable of more power. Show more Are electric screwdrivers safe to use in high-voltage applications? No, none of these tools are rated for high voltage. Electric screwdrivers are generally not safe to use in high-voltage applications as they do not have the necessary insulation to protect users from electric shocks. High-voltage environments require tools with special insulation to ensure user safety. Show more Is there a risk of damaging screws when using an electric screwdriver? Not any more than if you misuse a regular screwdriver. However, if you are new to electric screwdrivers, I recommend practicing with the tool before using it for real-world jobs. Also, remember that the screwdriver bits themselves are consumables, and you'll need to replace them when they get worn. Show more Are there alternative electric screwdrivers worth considering? Here are a couple of alternative electric screwdrivers worth considering. Both of these are perfect for someone who does a bit of DIY every so often -- maybe assembling flat-packed furniture or putting up shelves -- but would rather use battery power as opposed to muscle power. • The first 5 Linux commands every new user should learn
    www.zdnet.com
Jay Dickman/Getty ImagesI remember when I started using Linux in the late 1990s. Back then, using the command line wasn't optional. If you worked with the open-source operating system, you spent time in the terminal.Using the command line in the past was challenging because there wasn't as much help as today. I was pretty much on my own. Thankfully, I struggled through and became proficient. Of course, the irony of me putting in all that hard work is that using the command line isn't a requirement now. Also: Thinking about switching to Linux? 10 things you need to knowYet I remember learning those first, simple commands. Those foundations made it easier for me to continue onward and created a solid base from which to build.Although these commands are rather rudimentary, you should take your first steps and use the five commands suggested below. Not only will they be the most helpful as you get started, but they'll also be the commands you use the most.Let me explain why I believe every new user should learn these five Linux commands.lsThe ls command lists the contents of a directory. When you run ls, it will show you all folders and files within the directory, and nothing else. But ls does have a couple of tricks up its sleeve. For example, say you want to see the details of the files and folders in that directory, you would add the -l option (which stands for long list). When you issue the command ls -l (which can also be run as ll), you see the permissions, owner, group, size, and creation date/time of each file and folder.Also:5 Microsoft Edge features that might make it my new favorite Linux browserAnother handy addition is the -a option, which stands for all. If you have hidden directories (directories that start with a .), the only way to see them is to run the command ls -a. You could even combine l and a, with the command ls -la, which will show the details of all files and folders in your directory.cdThe cd command is what you use when you need to change directories. For example, say you are in your home directory (sometimes noted ~/ or /home/USERNAME, where USERNAME is your Linux username) and want to change to the Documents directory. For that, you would run the command cd Documents. What if you want to change into the Documents directory in ~/, but you're not in ~/? That's an easy switch. Since ~/ is shorthand for /home/USERNAME/, you could issue the command cd ~/Documents. Or, if you're in any directory on your drive, you could change to your home directory with the command cd.rmIs there a file or folder you want to delete? If so, you can use the rm command. Say, for instance, you have /home/colette/test.txt and want to delete it. For that task, the command would be rm /home/colette/test.txt. Of course, you could use the shorthand, rm ~/test.txt.To delete a folder is a bit trickier. If you have the folder ~/test and issue the command rm ~/test, you will receive an error. That error will occur because you have to use the r option (for recursive). This option deletes the contents of test, and then deletes the folder. The command for that process is rm -r ~/test.There's one more trick. If you want to be extra careful when deleting folders, you could use the interactive method, which asks you before it deletes anything. For that, the command would be rm -ir ~/test.cpIf you need to copy a file, you use the cp command. For example, let's say you have the file ~/test.txt and you want to make a copy of it. You can't create a copy of a file and name it the same thing (unless you're creating the copy in a different directory). If you want to place the copy in a different directory, the command is something like cp ~/text.txt ~/Documents/. You should note that I didn't have to specify a file name in the second half of the command. However, if you want to place the copy in the same directory, you should specify the new file name like this:cp ~/test.txt ~/test1.txt. You can create a copy in a different directoryand rename it like this:cp ~/test.text ~/Documents/test1.txt.mvThe mv command stands for move and makes it possible to move a file or folder from one location to another. If you want to move ~/test.txt into the Documents directory, that command is mv ~/test.txt ~/Documents/. Notice that I didn't add the file name to the second half of the command. It's very much like the cp command in that regard. Also:There's a new coolest Linux distribution ready to wow youThe mv command is also what you use when you want to rename a file (without making a copy). For instance, say you want to rename ~/test.txt to ~/testing.txt. For that process, the command is mv ~/test.txt ~/testing.txt. And, yes, you could also move and rename the file simultaneously, like this:mv ~/test.txt ~/Documents/testing.txt.One final noteI've shown you the basics of each command. When you first start using Linux, that's all you'll need. However, as you keep going, you might need to use the more advanced features of those commands. The best place to start is the manual pages (aka man pages), which are available on your system. You can view the man page for each command by running man COMMAND (where COMMAND is the name of the command you want to read about). So man ls, man cd, man rm, man cp, and man mv. Those manual pages detail all of the options available for each command.Enjoy taking your first steps with the Linux command line.Linux Terminal FAQ What is a terminal in Linux? A terminal -- also known as a shell, console, or terminal emulator -- is where you interact with the Linux operating system using text-based commands. Show more How do I open a new terminal window? You can open a new terminal window by opening your desktop menu and search for "terminal." Or use && and & in a single command, like so find /path/to/directory -type f &> find_output.log && ls &. How do I customize my shell experience? You can modify your shell configuration file (~/.bashrc being one of the most widely used) to change settings like: Show more Prompt styleAuto-completion optionsCommand history and navigationAliases (although it's better to add aliases to ~/.bash_aliases) How do I use the command line safely and securely? Also, use the -i option (for interactive) when deleting files, so you don't accidentally delete something you need. Show more Where can I find more resources on Linux command-line skills? • Getty Museum Acquires Its First AI-Generated Photograph
    www.forbes.com
The men in Matias Sauter Moreras AI-generated photo Cristian en el Amor de Calle come from the ... [+] clandestine world of the Costa Rican pegamachos.Matas Sauter-Morera, courtesy Craig Krull GalleryTwo young men with thick black hair and dark, intense eyes stare directly into the camera in Matias Sauter Moreras photo Cristian en el Amor de Calle. But the Costa Rican photographer never captured their gaze, because the men arent real. Morera brought them to life using artificial intelligence and their portrait will soon hang in the Getty Museum as the first A.I.-generated photo acquired for its permanent collection. The photo comes from a series by Morera that reimagines, through visual and written narratives, the clandestine culture of the Costa Rican pegamachos. The term describes men, often from rural areas, who maintained an outward heterosexual identity while participating in secret encounters with other men. These cowboys from the Guanacaste Coast represent a deeply personal yet hidden piece of Costa Rican queer history from the 1970s and 1980s that Morera felt a powerful pull to tell.Initially, I considered a photographic documentary approach although difficult, I thought of tracking them down and photographing them, as I have done in my usual creative practice as a photographer, Morera said in an interview. However, nowadays, there are less stories of them, and my intent is never to expose them, but rather to reimagine these homoerotic stories and fantasies. AI provided a way also to achieve this without intruding on real lives, or placing real Costa Rican faces that other people of the community might recognize.Cristian en el Amor de Calle will appear in Queer Lens: A History of Photography, on display at the Getty from June 17 through Sept. 28. The exhibit explores photographys role in shaping and affirming the tapestry of the LGBTQ+ community. This acquisition allowed us to dip our toes, so to speak, into the A.I.-generated universe, Paul Martineau, curator in the Getty Museums department of photographs, said over email. The Getty acquired the photo as artists across creative disciplines grapple with the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, and what it means for their livelihoods and for creativity itself. Why This Particular Image? The museum doesnt have specific plans to acquire more AI-generated images, Martineau said, adding that it chose Moreras print as its inaugural acquisition in the category because it strengthens the Gettys growing holdings of work by LGBTQ+ artists. Acquiring this work is also part of our concerted effort to expand our holdings of Latin American makers, the curator said. The 20x20-inch image purchased by the Getty is one of the first Morera created for the pegamachos project in 2023. For the series, he starts with developing a written narrative that takes place within the world of the pegamachos. He then generates accompanying images using AI prompts, and edits and re-edits them until they look like historical documentary portraits.Documentary Photography Meets AIHe prints the image through chromogenic printing, an analog method that dominated photographic prints in the 70s and 80s. Light is projected onto silver halide paper, transforming a synthetic digital image into what I consider a true photograph, a literal drawing with light, said the artist, who splits his time between Costa Rica and Berlin. By using this process, I aim to bridge the gap between AI-generated imagery and traditional photography, ensuring that the final image feels tangible and historically grounded.Morera will open a solo exhibition of his pegamachos project at the Craig Krull Gallery in Santa Monica, Calif., on March 22. The images in the collection are saturated in deep colors blues, greens, reds and golds. To celebrate the release of the movie Barbie in 2023, Morera generated a set of images showing pegamachos in shiny pink garb affixed with encrusted jewels.Although the pegamachos pictured resemble photographs, Morera said he views AI as a creative medium in itself, distinct from photography.Since the pegamachos culture remains hidden, Morera said, these AI images serve as a mimicry of photography, a fiction and a medium through which I can imagine and construct an imagined parallel history.

  • Texas Measles Cases Now At 124 With Fear Of Spread To Other Areas
    www.forbes.com
The measles outbreak in Texas continues to grow, with XXX cases now reported in the South Plains ... [+] region. Fear of spread has increased, too, with people in south-central Texas alerted. (Photo by CDC via Getty Images)Getty ImagesThe measles outbreak in western Texas now has ballooned to 124 cases, according to data released on Tuesday by the Texas Department of State Health Services. This represents an increase of 66 cases since last Tuesday, and officials warn that the outbreak will continue to spread locally and may spread more broadly.Indeed, public health officials on Monday issued an alert for people in south-central Texas. A Gaines County resident recently diagnosed with measles visited Texas State University, UT San Antonio and several other public locations in San Marcos and San Antonio between Feb. 14 and Feb. 16. In the TDSHS alert, officials note that the person was contagious during the trip and may have exposed other individuals to the virus. People who may have been exposed should monitor their conditions, especially if they are unvaccinated. There have been 80 cases reported in Gaines County and 21 in Terry County. Additional cases have been reported in Dallam, Dawson, Ector, Lubbock, Lynn, Martin and Yoakum counties. Thirty-nine of the cases have been in children under the age of 5, while 62 cases have been in people between the ages of 5 and 17. People who were unvaccinated or whose vaccine status is unknown account for 119 cases. Public health officials in New Mexico have reported nine cases in that state, all within Lea County. Although Lea County borders Gaines County, it has not yet been shown that the two outbreaks are linked. The measles vaccine, administered as part of the measles mumps rubella vaccine, is very safe and highly effective. Indeed, public health officials announced in 2000 that widespread vaccination ended the sustained transmission of measles in the United States. Only sporadic outbreaks now occur. However, the vaccine does not provide 100% protection. Studies have shown that its about 97% effective, but what does that actually mean? Basically, people who are vaccinated are 97% less likely than people who are unvaccinated to get measles, assuming that people in both groups are exposed similarly. Lets look at it another way. If 100 people in an unvaccinated group develop measles, then only three people in a vaccinated group should develop measles. And vaccinated patients tend to have milder symptoms and are less likely to transmit the virus to others.Of course, myriad factors, including the underlying health of an individual, a persons age or the extent of exposure all can influence the outcome in a specific person. But the general trend holds: This vaccine is incredibly effective.Still, a risk to vaccinated people does exist. For example, about 5% of the patients in a large 2018 outbreak in New York City were vaccinated. And although most cases in Texas have occurred in unvaccinated people, five cases have been reported in vaccinated individuals.Increasingly, vaccine deniers are using a personal choice framework to argue against vaccine requirements. Indeed, when asked about vaccines in 2024, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., now the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, stated that, people can make individual assessments about whether that product is going to be good for them. But its not simple. One persons decision to forego a safe and effective vaccine could affect multiple people in tragic ways, including infants too young to be vaccinated or those who are immunocompromised.Decreasing vaccination rates negatively affect all of us.

  • Apple Shareholders Reject Bid to Scrap Diversity Programs
    time.com
Tim Cook, CEO of Apple Inc., speaks with President Trump during an American Workforce Policy Advisory board meeting in the State Dining Room of the White House on March 6, 2019.Al DragoBloomberg/Getty ImagesBy MICHAEL LIEDTKE / APFebruary 25, 2025 12:58 PM ESTApple shareholders rebuffed an attempt to pressure the technology trendsetter into joining President Donald Trump's push to scrub corporate programs designed to diversify its workforce. The proposal drafted by the National Center for Public Policy Research a self-described conservative think tank urged Apple to follow a litany of high-profile companies that have retreated from diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives currently in the Trump administration's crosshairs. After a brief presentation about the anti-DEI proposal, Apple announced shareholders had rejected it without disclosing the vote tally. The preliminary results will be outlined in a regulatory later Tuesday. The outcome vindicated Apple management's decision to stand behind its diversity commitment even though Trump asked the U.S. Department of Justice to look into whether these types of programs have discriminated against some employees whose race or gender aren't aligned with the initiative's goals. But Apple CEO Tim Cook has maintained a cordial relationship with Trump since his first term in office, an alliance that so far has helped the company skirt tariffs on its iPhones made in China. After Cook and Trump met last week, Apple on Monday announced it will invest $500 billion in the U.S. and create 20,000 more jobs during the next five years a commitment applauded by the president.Tuesday's shareholder vote came a month after the same group presented a similar proposal during Costco's annual meeting, only to have it overwhelmingly rejected. That snub didn't discourage the National Center for Public Policy Research from confronting Apple about its DEI program in a pre-recorded presentation by Stefan Padfield, executive director of the think tank's Free Enterprise Project, who asserted forced diversity is bad for business. In the presentation, Padfield attacked Apples diversity commitments for being out of line with recent court rulings and said the programs expose the Cupertino, California, company to an onslaught of potential lawsuits for alleged discrimination. He cited the Trump administration as one of Apple's potential legal adversaries. The vibe shift is clear: DEI is out and merit is in, Padfield said in the presentation. The specter of potential legal trouble was magnified last week when Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier filed a federal lawsuit against Target alleging the retailers recently scaled-back DEI program alienated many consumers and undercut sales to the detriment of shareholders.Just as Costco does, Apple contends that fostering a diverse workforce makes good business sense. But Cook conceded Apple may have to make some adjustments to its diversity program as the legal landscape changes while still striving to maintain a culture that has helped elevate the company to its current market value of $3.7 trillion greater than any other business in the world. We will continue to create a culture of belonging, Cook told shareholders during the meeting. In itslast diversity and inclusion report issued in 2022, Apple disclosed that nearly three-fourths of its global workforce consisted of white and Asian employees. Nearly two-thirds of its employees were men.Other major technology companies for years have reported employing mostly white and Asian men, especially in high-paid engineering jobs a tendency that spurred the industry to pursue largely unsuccessful efforts to diversify.More Must-Reads from TIMEInside Elon Musks War on WashingtonMeet the 2025 Women of the YearFor Americas Aging Workforce , Retirement Is a Distant DreamWhy Do More Young Adults Have Cancer?Colman Domingo Leads With Radical LoveHow to Get Better at Doing Things AloneCecily Strong on Goober the ClownColumn: The Rise of Americas BroligarchyContact us at letters@time.com

  • Apple Pledges to Invest $500B in the US over the Next 4 Years. 20,000 New Employees Will Be Hired
    techreport.com
Key TakeawaysApple has decided to invest $500 billion in the US over the next 4 years. This is its biggest financial commitment so far.A part of this money will go into creating a new manufacturing plant in Houston. The remaining will go into the Advanced Manufacturing Fund and a manufacturing-focused educational academy in Michigan.Apple says that it wants to drive innovation in the country, but Trump feels that Apple is only making this investment to avoid the new tariffs. Most of Apples products are manufactured in China. On Monday, Apple announced that it will be investing $500 billion over the next 4 years in the US and hire 20,000 additional employees in the process.A huge chunk of this money will go into building a new 250,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Houston thats expected to become functional by 2026. This facility will manufacture the servers that will power Apples AI services and, of course, will also drive up employment at the same time.In addition to this Houston facility, Apple will also invest in new data centers acrossOregon, North Carolina, Iowa, Nevada, and more. The remaining amount will go into:Building a manufacturing-focused educational academy in Michigan. The Advanced Manufacturing Fund created to boost innovation across the country. We are bullish on the future of American innovation, and were proud to build on our long-standing U.S. investments with this $500 billion commitment to our countrys future CEO Tim CookWhy Is Apple Suddenly Making Such a Massive Investment? As mentioned, this is Apples biggest financial commitment. So, needless to say, it wouldnt be without a good reason. The most obvious reason is Trump. The president feels that Apples investment is a response to his proposal of imposing an additional 10% tax on imported goods.Basically, after Trump came to power, he decided to impose reciprocal taxes on all trade partners of the US in order to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. Now, Apple produces most of its products in China. So, if Trumps regulation goes into effect (which it will), then all Apple products from China will face an additional 10% tax. This, in turn, will jack up prices for Apple customers in the US. Something the company cannot afford to do.Trump feels that the only reason Apple is making this investment is to avoid the new tariff. On Apples side, the company has been trying to diversify its production chain outside China for a long time now. This is primarily because of the tough times it faced when the pandemic disrupted the global supply chain. However, so far, its expansion efforts have been focused on India and Vietnam.Regardless of the actual reason, Apples decision ultimately benefits the US, which has been running on a trade deficit for years now. In fact, the last time the country had a trade surplus was in 1975.Moreover, the US is also struggling with debt, owing to years of fiscal deficit. In a situation like this, such a massive investment from one of the worlds biggest tech giants will certainly be a huge boost.Another noteworthy perspective is how this move will reduce Americas reliance on China, which are not on good terms with each other. A recent example of this is the US considering moving away from Chinese medical devices due to potential cybersecurity risks.Read more: Apple removes cloud encryption feature from the UKAdd Techreport to Your Google News Feed Get the latest updates, trends, and insights delivered straight to your fingertips. • Chinese Medical Devices in Health Systems Across the US Is a Worrying Sign
    techreport.com
Key TakeawaysChinese medical devices, like Contec CMS8000, carry cybersecurity risks, such as backdoors that could manipulate patient data.Chinas data collection through medical tech raises national security concerns, especially for high-profile individuals. The U.S. must reduce reliance on Chinese medical equipment by securing current devices and boosting domestic production. If theres one thing Chinese tech has lately made headlines for, its security concerns. After DeepSeeks ban and TikTok still living on the edge, the US government is now worried about its dependence on China-made medical devices. The concerns cropped up after the federal governments cyber watchdog, CISA, and the FDA discovered a backdoor in Contec CMS8000 that directs its data to a third-party university IP address not associated with a medical device manufacturer or medical facility. The Contec CMS8000, in case you didnt know, is a widely used medical monitor. Its used for tracking heart rate, oxygen saturation, and blood pressure. If the backdoor leads to someone unauthorized, the person at the other end will be able to manipulate data and show incorrect results. For instance, it can alter the data and make the monitor show a kidney malfunction or breathing failure when in reality that isnt the case. Remedying issues that dont even exist can deteriorate the health of patients to unrecoverable extents. While on the surface, we can just see one risky device, the issue is actually pretty huge if we consider how this could be affecting the entire US ecosystem. Since Chinese medical equipment is cheaper, it is widely used in the US. This FDA finding alerts us that China receives all this data and could be using it for more than just monitoring the performance of its devices.China has had a history of gathering data from other countries through tech, and something as sensitive as medical data can give a huge strategic advantage to the country since it can access the private circumstances of high-profile individuals. Many IT experts reacted by saying they saw something like this coming long back and it only serves as a reminder that the US needs to adopt tighter medical device security policies and work on its medical infrastructure. The American Hospital Association, representative of more than 5,000 hospitals across the US, agreed that this incident has highlighted a huge gap thats about to explode. What Steps Will the US Take NextRight off the bat, the first problem is that the US doesnt even know how many medical monitors there are in the country. So, completely removing them from the country will be a tricky procedure. Speculations say there are thousands of devices, but without a ballpark figure, it wont be possible to determine how many are required to be replaced.Next, the US is too dependent on Chinas facilities to just decide to cut off Chinese pieces of medical equipment. It will take at least a few years for the country to develop a medical infrastructure thats capable of taking care of the countrys demand for medical technologies. Now, the short-term solution is for hospitals to make sure these devices only run locally and disable any remote monitoring. If remote monitoring is unavoidable, they should start looking for alternative devices.Besides this, the U.S. should start incentivizing domestic production of medical tech to reduce reliance on such compromised foreign medical services.Add Techreport to Your Google News Feed Get the latest updates, trends, and insights delivered straight to your fingertips. • Google adds searchable transcripts for videos uploaded to Drive
    www.techspot.com
Something to look forward to: Google Drive, the backbone of Google's cloud-based services, is rolling out a new tool to make navigating video content easier. Users can now generate transcripts for videos, but only if the clips already contain embedded captions. Google introduced the ability to automatically generate captions for video clips uploaded to Google Drive last year. On Monday, the company announced it is improving the caption feature with searchable transcripts. The new feature should be available soon for users with a Google account. The feature aims to enhance users' ability to discover and reference text within their videos, thus improving productivity. A sidebar beside the video player shows the transcript and highlights the text as the speaker talks. Aside from being able to copy and paste portions into a document, transcripts help users find specific moments in a video and jump to them quickly.Google said the update applies to all users with personal or Workspace accounts. While it should make video content more accessible, there is essentially no way for users to control the feature with specific admin tools. Transcripts only work with embedded captions, which users can quickly generate thanks to last year's platform update.Google provided some quick tips for generating captions and enabling transcripts on every video uploaded to Drive. The company also offers comprehensive online advice about using Drive as a video content hosting and editing platform for any internet-enabled device. However, users with free Google accounts have limited Drive space, so they will not have much room to store extensive video collections.Currently, developers are rolling out the transcript feature on rapid-release domains. However, Google said it could take up to 15 days to become accessible to all users. The extended rollout for scheduled release domains will start on February 26 and should be complete by March 26. // Related StoriesAs people watching YouTube know, automatic captioning is frequently messy, with incorrect text and missing words. However, Google still offers the option to upload custom subtitle "tracks," so users opt for accuracy rather than trusting the company's AI tech.
