Andrew Tate made his name as a misogynist podcast star, but has more recently been known as an alleged rapist and human trafficker as he awaits criminal trial in Romania with his brother Tristan. Last week, the Financial Times reported that the Trump administration, through special envoy Richard Grenell, had tried to pressure the Romanian government to lift travel restrictions on the brothers.Andrew Tate, whose online course Hustlers University morphed into a platform with nearly a million users, became a powder keg among far-right media influencers in the early 2020s due to his explicitly sexist worldview and its profound influence over millions of teen boys and young men. This latest high-profile turn in Tates ongoing legal saga has again brought the horrifying allegations against him to the forefront this time with apparent approval from the US government. Its also a reminder of the cultural reach of the so-called manosphere that Tate helped popularize.Andrew Tates enormous influence rests on intense misogyny and a lot of alleged criminal activityTates rise started with a successful kickboxing career, was followed by his removal from the British version of Big Brother, and culminated in a hugely popular podcast that anointed him the King of Toxic Masculinity. As Rebecca Jennings explained for Vox in 2022, his inflammatory diatribes against women, whom he compares to property became viral fodder on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. He was born in the US, raised in the UK, but now lives in Romania first moving there in part because, he said, the rape laws are more lenient, but has stayed since; following his arrest, he has largely not been allowed to leave the country.Tate helped bring to mainstream concerns about the manosphere, the term for the internets loose network of right-wing male influencers and their associated communities. Early on, Tate seemed to be such an obviously extremist node of the manosphere that he should be, as Jennings wrote, easy to ignore. But Tates confident, blatant misogyny proved wildly popular: His dictums, which ranged from bragging about never having read a book to flaunting an aggressive emotional and physical dominance over women, seemed to enthrall boys and men who admired him for his flashy lifestyle, vaunted wealth, and commitment to the bit. Tates maxims swept across teen culture, generating horror stories from parents and teachers about his seemingly pervasive and pernicious influence. Originally, Tate presented his schtick as pure fiction, a deliberately exaggerated regressive persona. It soon appeared that was far from the case, as allegations against Tate and his brother began mounting. Romanian officials have pursued Andrew and Tristan Tate since April 2022, when they first raided one of the pairs mansions after receiving a tip that the Tates had allegedly abducted a woman and were holding her there against her will. The following year, the brothers and two Romanian accomplices were indicted on charges of rape, forming a criminal gang, and human trafficking. Authorities alleged that Andrew and Tristan Tate had trafficked seven women from the US and the UK to Romania by grooming them and subjecting them to physical, sexual, and psychological abuse. (The brothers promptly responded with a civil suit against two of their alleged victims.) In early 2024, the two faced new UK allegations of human trafficking, stemming from an investigation launched more than a decade prior. Then, in August, the Tates faced additional charges of human trafficking after police raided their estate again and detained six people. The brothers have also faced multiple civil lawsuits filed by alleged victims. One such woman recently filed a suit against them in Florida, claiming they defamed her after she agreed to be a witness in the Romanian criminal trial.Despite the severity and breadth of the charges against them, things have been going fairly well for the Tates. Last month, Andrew Tate was released from house arrest, though he and his brother are still not allowed to leave Romania and are under court supervision. This followed the return of their luxury assets in October, and a November appeals court ruling that major evidence in the first Romanian criminal case, including testimony from alleged victims, was inadmissible. A judge, citing flaws in the indictment, sent the case back to prosecutors for revision. This left the case on shaky ground and that was before the American government came calling. Romanias foreign minister, Emil Hurezeanu, dismissed his conversation last week with Grenell, which took place briefly during the Munich Security Conference, as just a repeat of a known stance. Grenells position as special missions envoy seems to be an informal one based mainly on his status as a longtime Trump loyalist and his previous role as ambassador to Germany, but hes made his interest in the Tate brothers public and explicitly political. On February 3, before the trip to Munich, Grenell quote-tweeted a reply to Tristan Tate on X and alleged that Romania had used funds from the beleaguered USAID agency to target conservatives, saying the program was weaponized against people and politicians who werent woke. There appears to be no factual basis for this claim, but it bolsters the Tates longtime argument that they are the victims of a political witch hunt.I support the Tate brothers as evident by my publicly available tweets, Grenell told the Financial Times.Tates cultural impact has been felt for years, but is this just the start? Andrew and Tristan Tate now face three different criminal cases and multiple civil lawsuits in different countries, most for extremely serious allegations of violence and sexual abuse against women. Their most expansive alleged crime, human trafficking, became part of Andrew Tates online brand. He actually sold an online course to his followers on how to do it, what he called the Pimping Hoes Degree.Experts say that the techniques Tate taught in this course and elsewhere could be seen as a textbook for how to engage in literal, criminal human trafficking and the messages Tate espouses across the manosphere are replete with boasting about violence towards women, sexual assault, grooming underage girls, and emotional abuse. The Andrew Tate effect on young men has been so profound that counteracting it has become a mission across multiple public service sectors, from education to public health. Researchers in Sweden found that boys exposed to manosphere influencers were more likely to dehumanize women, while researchers in Australia found widespread experience of sexual harassment, sexism, and misogyny perpetrated by boys towards women teachers, and the ominous presence of Andrew Tate shaping their behaviour. Concerns about Tate encompass real concerns about public safety, and whether boys who have prolonged exposure to him could become more aggressive toward the women around them. At the same time, Tate and others in the manosphere have been credited with helping swing the 2024 US election resoundingly for Trump among young men.Tate is already a manifestation of extreme misogyny, the worst of what the manosphere has wrought and his cultural, and now political, elevation is part of a larger, grimmer regression we are perhaps only just at the beginning of. The Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that Richard Glossip, a man sentenced to die under extraordinarily dubious circumstances, must receive a new trial. The case is Glossip v. Oklahoma.The Court, which has a 6-3 Republican majority, is often unsympathetic to death row inmates who challenge their conviction or who seek to avoid execution. Its unlikely that the Glossip case foreshadows a break with this trend, as Glossip brought an unusually strong case to the Supreme Court. Indeed, his case is strong enough that Oklahomas Republican attorney general, who ordinarily would be tasked with defending Glossips conviction, instead argued that Glossips trial was so flawed that it violated the Constitution.In total, five justices Chief Justice John Roberts, plus Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, Brett Kavanaugh, and Ketanji Brown Jackson voted to grant Glossip a new trial. Justice Amy Coney Barrett agreed that Glossips constitutional rights were violated, but she would have sent the case to an Oklahoma appeals court instead. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented (Justice Neil Gorsuch was recused).Many powerful players within Oklahoma raised serious doubts about Glossips conviction, and the state produced two investigations laying out the many flaws in the case against Glossip. One investigation, conducted by the law firm Reed Smith on behalf of a group of several dozen state lawmakers, determined that a wide range of errors, destroyed evidence, and police failures fundamentally call into question the fairness of the proceedings and the ultimate reliability of the guilty verdict against Glossip for murder.A second investigation, commissioned by state Attorney General Gentner Drummond, determined that Glossip was deprived of a fair trial in which the State can have confidence in the process and result.Though the police investigation and prosecution of Glossip had many errors (I summarize some of them here), Justice Sotomayors majority opinion in Glossip focuses on just one of them. Nearly two decades after Glossips conviction, the state revealed that a key witness falsely testified at trial that hed never seen a psychiatrist. The prosecution never corrected that false testimony despite being aware of the witnesss previous psychiatric treatment.That violates the Supreme Courts decision in Napue v. Illinois (1959), which generally forbids prosecutors from introducing false testimony, and which typically requires prosecutors to correct such testimony when it occurs.The case against Glossip is quite flimsyIn 1997, Justin Sneed, a maintenance worker at a motel owned by Barry Van Treese, killed Van Treese with a baseball bat. At the time, Glossip was the manager of this motel.Glossip isnt entirely innocent. According to his lawyers, Glossip spoke to police voluntarily on the day of the murder and again after he was detained the next day, admitting that he took actions after Van Treese was killed that helped Sneed after the fact. Initially, the state charged Glossip as an accessory after the fact, for helping to cover up the murder and clean up the murder scene. But that charge was later upgraded to murder.There are many reasons to doubt the upgraded charge. At Glossips trial, the states theory was that Glossip masterminded the murder and hired Sneed to carry it out. However, there is significant evidence that the police railroaded Sneed into endorsing this theory. The Reed Smith report, for example, found that Sneed implicated Glossip in the murder itself only after [lead] Detective [Robert] Bemo interjected his views that Sneed did not act alone, that Sneed could help himself, that Glossip was arrested, and that Glossip was blaming Sneed for the murder.Sneed testified against Glossip at his 2004 trial, and this testimony was the only direct evidence connecting Glossip to the murder. The state, which supported Glossips call for a new trial, describes Sneed as an indispensable witness.But Sneed was also a much more flawed witness than prosecutors allowed the jury to believe. During that trial, Sneed falsely testified that he had never seen no psychiatrist or anything. Though hed been prescribed lithium, a drug used to treat some mental illnesses, while he was in jail for Van Treeses murder, Sneed suggested that this was a mistake and that hed only asked for Sudafed to treat a cold.In 2023, however, the state turned over a document to Glossips lawyers which undermined Sneeds testimony and suggested that prosecutors knew that Sneed was lying during Glossips murder trial. That document, a page of handwritten notes by lead prosecutor Connie Smothermon, included notations indicating that Smothermon knew that Sneed was on Lithium as well as a reference to a Dr. Trumpet.Dr. Trumpet turns out to be Dr. Larry Trombka, who was the jail psychiatrist while Sneed was incarcerated in that facility. Trombka prescribed lithium to treat Sneeds bipolar disorder. And he later said that Sneeds mental illness could have caused him to experience a manic episode that may have led him to be more paranoid or potentially violent, and that Sneeds condition was exacerbated by illicit drug use, such as methamphetamine.Had Glossips lawyers known about Sneeds diagnosis and treatment during his 2004 trial, they could have used it to undercut Sneeds testimony in several ways. For starters, the mere fact that Sneed testified falsely about his own medical history undermines his credibility and may have caused the jury to doubt the states essential witness. Additionally, had defense attorneys known about Sneeds mental health diagnosis, they could have raised doubts about the states murder-for-hire theory instead arguing that Sneed committed murder as a spontaneous act brought about by a manic episode and his drug use.As Sotomayor explains in the Courts Glossip opinion, the Napue decision is quite favorable to someone, like Glossip, who is convicted based on false testimony that the prosecutor could have corrected. Napue calls for a conviction to be tossed out so long as the false testimony may have had an effect on the outcome of the trial. Later Supreme Court decisions establish that a conviction obtained by the knowing use of perjured testimony must be set aside if there is any reasonable likelihood that the false testimony could have affected the jurys verdict, and they suggest that this rule can only be overcome if the prosecution can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the error complained of did not contribute to the verdict obtained.Sotomayors opinion, in other words, merely followed these established precedents to their logical conclusion. There is a reasonable likelihood that a jury would have acquitted Glossip if it had known that Sneeds testimony was false. And thats enough to grant him a new trial.See More:

Insider reports have compared the combat to The Witcher 3, but its difficult to tell how similar they are based on the short snippets seen so far.Its also believed that Fable could make the jump to PlayStation 5 anyway, with one insider saying the era of Xbox having permanent exclusives is over. The Independent/YouTube We now know the likely cause of a Starship test flight failure that caused rocket parts to rain down over popular tourist destinations back in January, and forcing airlines to divert flights. The upper stage Starship spacecraft experienced a stronger-than-expected harmonic response, according to a statement from SpaceX. By harmonic response, engineers mean vibrations amplified by resonance.That, in turn, put increased stress on the propulsion system, likely causing the rocket to explode before it had the chance to reach space. On January 17, the Super Heavy boosters 33 Raptor engines all fired successfully at launch, and the booster was able to both start up and complete its full burn. The upper stage ignited its own Raptor engines as it separated from the booster. While the booster did ultimately return to the ground, where it was caught at the launch site, there was a slight hiccup to the process. A low-power condition in one engines igniter system forced it to prematurely shut down, but the other 12 engines worked fine. SpaceX said a potential problem of this nature had already been identified and rectified for future flights by upgrading the igniter system. Things didnt go as swimmingly for the Starships second stage. Roughly two minutes after the engine burn began, a flash was observed in the aft section of the vehicle near one of the Raptor vacuum engines, SpaceX explained. This aft section, commonly referred to as the attic, is an unpressurized area between the bottom of the liquid oxygen tank and the aft heat shield. Sensors in the attic detected a pressure rise indicative of a leak after the flash was seen. Shortly after, another flash was seen, and fires broke out in the attic, leading to multiple engines undergoing a controlled shutdown. Communication was then lost with the ship.Contact with Starship was lost prior to triggering any destruct rules for its Autonomous Flight Safety System, which was fully healthy when communication was lost, SpaceX said. The vehicle was observed to break apart approximately three minutes after loss of contact during descent. Post-flight analysis indicates that the safety system did trigger autonomously, and breakup occurred within Flight Termination System expectations. The investigation, launched by SpaceX and overseen by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), was mandated by the FAA after the incident. The flight failure caused debris to rain down over the Atlantic Ocean, with some falling on inhabited portions of Turks and Caicos. No injuries were reported, though residents said they found remnants of the rocket on their properties and along local beaches. SpaceX offered a rosier account of the aftermath, saying that all debris came down within the pre-planned Debris Response Area, and there were no hazardous materials present in the debris and no significant impacts expected to occur to marine species or water quality. While an early end to the flight test is never a desired outcome, the measures put in place ahead of launch demonstrated their ability to keep the public safe.Starship is a super-heavy lift launch vehicle that has a key role in NASAs future plans. One planned variant would take astronauts to the Moon as part of the space agencys Artemis program. Others would be capable of transporting huge amounts of cargo, such as Starlink satellites, into orbit. The rockets next test launch is currently scheduled for Friday, February 28. As a result of the investigations findings, several modifications have been made to the design, including changes to the fuel feed lines to the vacuum engines, as well as adjustments to propellant temperatures. Vents and a purge system were also added to the attic to make it more fire resistant.Rockets are incredibly complicated, and several of the Starship tests have ended with mishaps. The first, in April 2023, led to massive damage to the launch pad. The rocket itself blew up around four minutes into its flight. The second flight test fared better, as key milestones were met, despite both the booster and upper stage being destroyed. Subsequent test runs identified even more issues, and SpaceX has now twice executed successful catches of the booster stage as it returns to the ground. Since the moment Nick Fury appeared at the end of 2008s Iron Man, modern superhero movies have been defined by post-credit scenes. Sure, a movie may be good, but what is it teasing next? Henry Cavill as Superman? Thanos? Harry Styles? Post-credit scenes have been Marvel Studioss bread and butter for almost two decades, and while DC has previously dabbled in them,the upcoming DC Universe may not be so beholden. Speaking to a group of press last week, DC Studios presidents James Gunn and Peter Safran discussed their ideology when it came to teasing the future and its not one defined by the notion. We know where were headed to with the larger story, Safran said. So James makes sure that those building blocks are going to be put in place. And then around that, theres a tremendous amount of latitude in terms of what we do. Basically, unless its something they are 100% sure is going to happen, you wont see a tease for it, either in a movie or after the credits. For an example of why that is, Gunn took from personal experience at Marvel. [Post-credits scenes] can be a real nightmare, he said. Like writing Guardians 3 and I wasnt really sure if Adam Warlock should be in it. But I fucking promised people. You know what I mean? And Im like, Oh, well, now Im writing the script and things change. And Im like, Im kind of cramming him in there. And I like him in the movie. I like the character. But it made it a little less elegant in some ways, the film. And so Im really careful about those sorts of promises that we dont know that we can deliver. Gunn specifically emphasized the dont know. This is speculative but heres how we see this. Superman is coming out. Thats a fact. And, as Gunn is finishing editing on that, Supergirl is in production as is Lanterns. Those are 100% happening. That makes either a potential candidate for a tease in Superman, as opposed to something like The Authority or Booster Gold which havent quite been solidified yet.In fact, theres already an example of this in the DCU. Batman appearing in Creature Commandos is exactly this. They dont know who is playing Batman yet, nor what the specific story of his film will be, but they know they are going to make a Batman film. The final design achieves HJH's goal of opening the campus to the broader community with an inviting and transparent museum building. The design prioritizes and maximizes interactivity for HJH and its visitors, with multiple flexible spaces for programs, events, conversations and presentations. A connection to the outdoors is achieved via a groundfloor patio that houses log cabins that have been integrated into the overall circulation path as well as a second-floor rooftop terrace for visitors to enjoy views of Snow King Mountain Resort and the surrounding rolling hillside. Drawing from Jackson's signature Western aesthetic, the overall design of the new museum building mirrors typologies of legacy stores on the block with glassy ground floor frontage and punched windows on the second level. The museum's footprint holds its scale with a two-story town building across the street and shifts down to match more intimately scaled properties on its other side. The design also features a covered boardwalk in sync with iconic town boardwalks, seamlessly connecting the museum to the rest of the central square. A rustic materiality is achieved through warmth and character in materials, even down to rougher finishes on wood, where appropriate, warmer metals, woven textures and more. There is a nod to the Jackson "Old West" style, but through an authentic approach that feels both modern and timeless.
