• No, Apple isn't subliminally calling Trump a racist with its iPhone dictation feature
    appleinsider.com
Conspiracy theorists believe Apple may be subliminally programming speech-to-text dictation users by briefly showing "Trump" when the word "racist" is said, which is obviously not true.Voice Memos showing the audio waveforms for the spoken words 'Trump' and 'racist'Machine learning algorithms can be fickle things. Apple's on-device dictation is still run by machine learning algorithms built with massive data sets trained on user inputs. The problem with teaching any algorithm anything is that they are very predisposed to relying on pattern matching. In the decade Donald Trump has been in the public eye, there has likely been an increase in the word "racist" appearing near "Trump." Continue Reading on AppleInsider | Discuss on our Forums

  • Assassins Creed Shadows is in Need of an Unequivocal Win
    gamingbolt.com
Given the vast sums of money that developers and publishers now need to invest into a AAA production to see it through to launch, the sad reality is that games of that ilk usually need to perform extraordinarily well to even be able to justify their existence, something that doesnt happen under the cloud of negative reception (and sometimes not even with positive responses). But more than just the basics, theres some significant reasons why the upcoming Assassins Creed Shadowsprobably has more pressure on it than the average AAA game to succeed.Your first assumption might be that were referring to the dire straits that Ubisoft finds itself in, and looking at how things have only gone for the company from bad to worse, you wouldnt be blamed for thinking that. But while that is obviously one of the biggest reasons Assassins Creed Shadowsis under so much pressure to deliver the goods, thats not what were focusing on here. No, were looking purely at theAssassins Creedfranchise itself, the trajectory that it has been on in the recent past, and whyShadowsneed to arrest whats been an undeniable decline. If were being entirely honest, its a little surprising that thats whereAssassins Creedfinds itself, because until just a few years ago, the series was probably flying higher than ever. It recovered from its post-Unitydip in convincing fashion by reinventing itself as a massive, open world action RPG experience with 2017sAssassins Creed Origins.Just a year later, it climbed even to even higher highs withAssassins Creed Odyssey, which continued to expand onOriginsaction RPG formula by adding in choice and consequence mechanics, and delivering what is widely regarded as one of the bestAssassins Creedgames to date. From combat and its sheer scale to its core protagonists, its naval gameplay, and more, there was so, so much to love about the 2018 epic.Transport yourself back to the months followingOdysseysrelease, and youd likely struggle to believe thatAssassins Creedwould be going anywhere but up anytime soon. After having found its groove once again with a new formula with Origins, and then having built on that formula with a game as good and successful as Odyssey,it seemed impossible at the time that the series wouldnt remain at that level for at least some time to come. From a commercial perspective, the series obviously didnotslip from that point. WhenAssassins Creed Valhallalaunched in 2020, it turned out to be an even bigger success thanOdysseyright off the bat.Valhallaremainsthe biggestAssassins Creedlaunch ever, one of the best selling games in the series history, and even one of the highest sellers that Ubisoft has ever put out, which means the game more than did what it was expected to from a commercial perspective. But while Ubisoft will obviously have been ecstatic aboutValhallasperformance, among audiences, the open world behemoth remains quite a divisive game.Open world behemoth is the key phrase there, because as much as that may sound like praise to many, for a large portion ofAssassins Creed Valhallasplayer base, it was precisely its size that soured so many people on it. It wasnt even purely a case of too much of a good thing (although that was certainly part of the problem, given just how big the game was)- for many, it was a far bigger issue that so much of the game just wasnt designed well enough. The world felt samey and overly massive, to the point where all of it felt blended together, almost like it was procedurally generated. The immediacy and game feel ofOdysseywas missing, which made everything from traversal to combat to even simple movement feel a little less snappy. The story was a mixed bag, with just as many people walking away disenchanted as there were those who enjoyed it.The game had, in a nutshell, its fair share of issues, all of which were exacerbated massively by how unreasonably large and bloated it was. No game is ever perfect, but flaws become much more difficult to forgive when they frustratingly keep cropping up over the course of a 100 hour plus trek across a gargantuan world that just will not stop throwing content in your face. A couple of years beforeValhallacame out, even the widely praisedOdysseyhad caught its fair share of flak for being perceived as bloated by many, so to see its successor doubling down on those tendencies was frustrating, to say the least. We havent had a new mainline flagshipAssassins Creedrelease sinceValhallaso far, though Ubisoft did release a bunch of post-launch content for the 2020 title (not that it was in need of beefing up), while in 2023, the company also released the smaller, standaloneAssassins Creed Mirage-which also wasnt exactly an unequivocal win. Yes, it was smaller and shorter, and yes, it went back to focusing on stealth and parkour in a way that was much more in line with the pre-Originstitles. But though its non-bloated non-RPG-ness was definitely appreciated, many felt that the game itself was solid yet unremarkable.Again,Miragedid well enough for Ubisoft to be deemed a commercial success, standing tall as one of the few unequivocal commercial victories the company has enjoyed in recent years. In fact, in fairness, its not like Assassins Creed the series isstruggling, and certainly, its nowhere near in the sort of trouble when it was in 2014, after the implosive release ofAssassins Creed Unity. But for fans, it has been some time sinceAssassins Creedreally hit the heights that we all know it is capable of hitting when it is firing on all cylinders.Which is why its important thatShadowsknocks the ball out of the park. Many have been skeptical of the upcoming action RPG in the lead up to its release, and truthfully, there were times whenShadowspre-launch showings were looking a little rougher than youd like. But with more time in the oven thanks to a couple of delays,it has looked significantly better in recent weeks and months. On paper, all of the gameplay and narrative information that had been revealed forAssassins Creed Shadowshad sounded conceptually fascinating right from the get go, but now, the gameplay footage and impressions weve seen of late has finally looked like it might do justice to those concepts.Obviously, its too early to say anything for sure, especially given how spotty Ubisofts track record has been, but cautious optimism thatAssassins Creed Shadowsmight do what it needs to do doesnt seem unwarranted at this point. Of course, Ubisoft has a large number ofAssassins Creedprojects in the works at the same time, which means several more releases are likely lined up for the relatively near future, over the coming years (including, interestingly enough, a remake ofAssassins Creed 4: Black Flaglater this year, if leaks are to be believed). But ifShadowsturns out to be yet another miss, its only going to send the series graph plummeting deeper still- and if that goes on, it might not be long beforeAssassins Creedgames stop selling well despite muted or even outright divisive reception.Note: The views expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of, and should not be attributed to, GamingBolt as an organization.

Justin Carter, Contributing EditorFebruary 25, 20252 Min ReadImage via Player First Games/WB Games. At a GlanceWB Games' struggles continue with the closures of Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB San Diego.Warner Bros. Games is reportedly shutting down three studios: Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and its self-titled San Diego team.Per Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, the trio of developers will be winding down later this week. Monolith's Wonder Woman game has also been canceled as a result of the studio's closure."This is a strategic change in direction and not a reflection of these teams or the talent that exists within them," wrote WB Games in a statement. "We greatly admire the passion of these three teams and thank every employee for their contributions."How Warner Bros. Games got hereIn 2024, Rocksteady's Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was a massive financial bust for WB Games, and it's been trying to recover ever since.Earlier in February, Bloomberg reported on the publisher's struggles and the situation at its various internal teams. The report came after the departure of games head David Haddad at the end of January, whose tenure was described by some developers as "years of ineffectual trend-chasing and wasted development time."According to that report, Monolith quietly rebooted its Wonder Woman game, whose budget was already said to be over $100 million. WB's statement claimed its desire to deliver the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character...is no longer possible within our strategic priorities."The studio's last game was 2017's Middle-earth: Shadow of War.Player First released the platform fighter MultiVersus, first in Early Access in 2022, then as a full release in 2024. The game was already set to be shut down at the end of May, and the studio had been acquired by WB shortly after its official launch.WB Games was founded in 2019, and was established to work on free-to-play mobile games.Earlier this week, DC Films co-head James Gunn affirmed the company's commitment to games and said he spoke with Rocksteady and NetherRealm about new DC titles. • Tekken 8 sales punch up to 3 million copies in first year
    www.gamedeveloper.com
Over a year after launch, Tekken 8 has sold 3 million copies worldwide.Bandai Namco announced the milestone during a recent livestream, and added that the fighting game hit the benchmark faster than 2017's Tekken 7. Within a month of its launch, Tekken 8 had already sold over 2 million copies, well past initial projections."We hope that everyone will stick with us, as we have a lot of cool stuff planned to keep the franchise going," said Bandai Namco during the stream.Tekken 8 marked the series' first new installment in nearly a decade, and released to critical acclaim. During the stream, the developer also announced the first DLC character for the game's Year 2 roster: Anna Williams, who also joined Tekken 7 as a post-launch fighter.Tekken 8's sales aren't over yetHow does Tekken 8's 3 million copies compare to other recent big fighting games? Looking at 2023's Street Fighter 6, Capcom's fighter hit that same milestone in half a year, and as of December 2024, it's sold over 4.4 million copies.Mortal Kombat 1 from that same year sold nearly 3 million copies in about two months. In January, NetherRealm's creative director Ed Boon revealed that number had risen to 5 million copies, and said the game still had more life left in it.Looking at its own franchise, Tekken 7 has managed to sell over 12 million copies by July 2024. That game was helped by frequently going on sale, the long gap between other games in the series, and attention-grabbing DLC characters. So far, Tekken 8 has one of those, but it can keep growing as the years go on and Bandai Namco continues supporting the game.
