  • Monster Hunter Wilds Producer Reveals Why Older Games Havent Been Remastered
    gamingbolt.com
While Capcom has been quite proactive in bringing its older Resident Evil titles to modern platforms, either through remasters or remakes, the company has been seemingly content to let older games in the Monster Hunter franchise stay where they are. In a recent interview with Arrekz Gaming, series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto revealed the complications that might arise if the studio were to remaster older Monster Hunter games for modern platforms. The decision seemingly comes down to the fact that, from its very beginnings, Monster Hunter has always been envisioned as a multiplayer franchise first and foremost. And because of this, the multiplayer systems in various Monster Hunter games over the years have been designed around the platforms the games were released on.One of the barriers to trying to remaster or remake a Monster Hunter game is that its always been an online game with multiplayer, said Tsujimoto. So each generation of Monster Hunter game has been structured and built around the online capabilities of that generation. We now have a much better online infrastructure, he continued. Trying to go back to a game that was from 2004 Internet, update it in a way that actually feel[s] good to play in the modern day, would probably end up making so many changes that is it actually meaningful to call it a remake or a remaster of the first game? I think that thats one of the principal reasons we generally move forward with the series rather than look back to remakes. For context, Monster Hunter originally made its debut on the PS2, and made heavy use of the consoles online modem for its multiplayer mode. Since then, the series has jumped around on different platforms, featuring local multiplayer through ad hoc connections on the PSP and 3DS, as well as online multiplayer on Wii, Wii U, 3DS and Nintendo Switch. While games in the franchise since World have been fine in terms of preservation, since alongside consoles theyve also been coming to PC, older titles are still stuck on platforms that essentially have no online capabilities anymore. This includes Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and Generations. Generations Ultimate is seemingly fine for the time being, since it is available on the Nintendo Switch.Even the last console release of a Monster Hunter game before World, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, is unfortunately stuck on the Wii U and 3DS. While still playable if you have the appropriate platforms, online multiplayer cant be experienced anymore since Nintendo has since shut down servers for the consoles.Currently, Capcom is gearing up for the release of Monster Hunter Wilds tomorrow. The game is coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. For more details, check out our review. And also check out details of the big day one patch. Leading up to the games release, Capcom has also released a new live action trailer that shows off some more gameplay, while also doubling down on its central themes. In the meantime, you can also check out our rankings of the 25 hardest monsters in the Monster Hunter franchise.

  • Cricuts new crafting machines are more accurate, faster, and cheaper
    www.theverge.com
Cricut has announced new versions of its crafting machines designed to print, cut, and emboss various materials using a collection of swappable tools. The new Cricut Maker 4 and Cricut Explore 4 are the first updates to both machines in nearly four years and offer faster cutting speeds for some materials, improved accuracy, and cheaper price tags. The machines will be available starting on February 28th, 2025. Theyll still start at $249.99 for the Cricut Explore 4, and at $399.99 for the Cricut Maker 4, and both will be available in sage and seashell color options. The four-year-old Cricut Explore 3 sells for $319, while the Maker 3 is $439, so the cheaper price tags for the 4-series line could help make the new machines more accessible to new users. Both models come with a bundle of crafting materials to complete 10 initial projects. The Cricut Maker 4 and Explore 4 look nearly identical to their predecessors but are up to twice as fast when cutting through materials like cardstock and vinyl, Cricut says. The speed improvements wont be quite as dramatic when using thicker materials, but the upgrade will still appeal to crafters who sell their creations on sites like Etsy and are looking to upgrade their output.Cricut has also introduced a new optical sensor on both models that works alongside a light that better illuminates materials, according to CNET. The upgrade should help improve cutting accuracy, no matter what the lighting conditions are in your crafting room. Both machines can swap cutting tools for pens and markers allowing them to function as printers. Image: CricutAlthough there are differences between both machines capabilities, theyre mostly dependent on the types of projects youre looking to create. The pricier Cricut Maker 4 is designed to work with over 300 different types of materials, including thicker options like leather and balsa wood, and a wider variety of cutting and embossing tools. The cheaper Cricut Explore 4 is limited to around 100 different materials, including thinner stock like vinyl, card stock, and iron-ons.In 2021, the company frustrated existing users with plans to limit monthly uploads to its Design Space software used to prep projects before sending them to the machines. Subscription fees were announced for users wanting to expand the number of designs they could upload, but after much backlash, Cricut scrapped those plans entirely. While the new machines dont require subscriptions, the company still offers a Cricut Access subscription for users who heavily rely on pre-made designs and projects available through its Design Space app. Cricut Access also expands the number of fonts and images available through the app and includes discounts on materials.See More:

In todays rapidly evolving technological landscape, developers and organizations often grapple with a series of practical challenges. One of the most significant hurdles is the efficient processing of diverse data typestext, speech, and visionwithin a single system. Traditional approaches have typically required separate pipelines for each modality, leading to increased complexity, higher latency, and greater computational costs. In many applicationsfrom healthcare diagnostics to financial analyticsthese limitations can hinder the development of responsive and adaptive AI solutions. The need for models that balance robustness with efficiency is more pressing than ever. In this context, Microsofts recent work on small language models (SLMs) provides a promising approach by striving to consolidate capabilities in a compact, versatile package.Microsoft AI has recently introduced Phi-4-multimodal and Phi-4-mini, the newest additions to its Phi family of SLMs. These models have been developed with a clear focus on streamlining multimodal processing. Phi-4-multimodal is designed to handle text, speech, and visual inputs concurrently, all within a unified architecture. This integrated approach means that a single model can now interpret and generate responses based on varied data types without the need for separate, specialized systems. In contrast, Phi-4-mini is tailored specifically for text-based tasks. Despite being more compact, it has been engineered to excel in reasoning, coding, and instruction following. Both models are made accessible via platforms like Azure AI Foundry and Hugging Face, ensuring that developers from a range of industries can experiment with and integrate these models into their applications. This balanced release represents a thoughtful step towards making advanced AI more practical and accessible.Technical Details and BenefitsAt the technical level, Phi-4-multimodal is a 5.6-billion-parameter model that incorporates a mixture-of-LoRAsa method that allows the integration of speech, vision, and text within a single representation space. This design significantly simplifies the architecture by removing the need for separate processing pipelines. As a result, the model not only reduces computational overhead but also achieves lower latency, which is particularly beneficial for real-time applications.Phi-4-mini, with its 3.8-billion parameters, is built as a dense, decoder-only transformer. It features grouped-query attention and boasts a vocabulary of 200,000 tokens, enabling it to handle sequences of up to 128,000 tokens. Despite its smaller size, Phi-4-mini performs remarkably well in tasks that require deep reasoning and language understanding. One of its standout features is the capability for function callingallowing it to interact with external tools and APIs, thus extending its practical utility without requiring a larger, more resource-intensive model. Both models have been optimized for on-device execution. This optimization is particularly important for applications in environments with limited compute resources or in edge computing scenarios. The models reduced computational requirements make them a cost-effective choice, ensuring that advanced AI functionalities can be deployed even on devices that do not have extensive processing capabilities.Performance Insights and Benchmark DataBenchmark results provide a clear view of how these models perform in practical scenarios.
