• 5,000 Phishing PDFs on 260 Domains Distribute Lumma Stealer via Fake CAPTCHAs
    thehackernews.com
Feb 28, 2025Ravie LakshmananNetwork Security / MalwareCybersecurity researchers have uncovered a widespread phishing campaign that uses fake CAPTCHA images shared via PDF documents hosted on Webflow's content delivery network (CDN) to deliver the Lumma stealer malware.Netskope Threat Labs said it discovered 260 unique domains hosting 5,000 phishing PDF files that redirect victims to malicious websites."The attacker uses SEO to trick victims into visiting the pages by clicking on malicious search engine results," security researcher Jan Michael Alcantara said in a report shared with The Hacker News."While most phishing pages focus on stealing credit card information, some PDF files contain fake CAPTCHAs that trick victims into executing malicious PowerShell commands, ultimately leading to the Lumma Stealer malware."The phishing campaign is estimated to have affected more than 1,150 organizations and more than 7,000 users since the second half of 2024, with the attacks primarily singling out victims in North America, Asia, and Southern Europe across technology, financial services, and manufacturing sectors.Of the 260 domains identified to host the fake PDFs, a majority of them are related to Webflow, followed by those related to GoDaddy, Strikingly, Wix, and Fastly.Attackers have also been observed uploading some of the PDF files to legitimate online libraries and PDF repositories like PDFCOFFEE, PDF4PRO, PDFBean, and Internet Archive, such that users searching for PDF documents on search engines are directed to them. The PDFs contain fraudulent CAPTCHA images that act as a conduit to steal credit card information. Alternatively, those distributing Lumma Stealer contain images to download the document that, when clicked, takes the victim to a malicious site. For its part, the site masquerades as a fake CAPTCHA verification page that employs the ClickFix technique to deceive the victim into running an MSHTA command that executes the stealer malware by means of a PowerShell script. In recent weeks, Lumma Stealer has also been disguised as Roblox games and a cracked version of the Total Commander tool for Windows, highlighting the myriad delivery mechanisms adopted by various threat actors. Users are redirected to these websites through YouTube videos likely uploaded from previously compromised accounts."Malicious links and infected files are often disguised in [YouTube videos, comments, or descriptions," Silent Push said. "Exercising caution and being skeptical of unverified sources when interacting with YouTube content, especially when prompted to download or click on links, can help protect against these growing threats."The cybersecurity company further found that Lumma Stealer logs are being shared for free on a relatively new hacking forum called Leaky[.]pro that went operational in late December 2024.Lumma Stealer is a fully-featured crimeware solution that's offered for sale under the malware-as-a-service (MaaS) model, giving a way to harvest a wide range of information from compromised Windows hosts. In early 2024, the malware operators announced an integration with a Golang-based proxy malware named GhostSocks."The addition of a SOCKS5 backconnect feature to existing Lumma infections, or any malware for that matter, is highly lucrative for threat actors," Infrawatch said."By leveraging victims' internet connections, attackers can bypass geographic restrictions and IP-based integrity checks, particularly those enforced by financial institutions and other high-value targets. This capability significantly increases the probability of success for unauthorized access attempts using credentials harvested via infostealer logs, further enhancing the post-exploitation value of Lumma infections."The disclosures come as stealer malware like Vidar and Atomic macOS Stealer (AMOS) are being distributed using the ClickFix method via lures for the DeepSeek artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, according to Zscaler ThreatLabz and eSentire.Phishing attacks have also been spotted abusing a JavaScript obfuscation method that uses invisible Unicode characters to represent binary values, a technique that was first documented in October 2024.The approach entails making use of Unicode filler characters, specifically Hangul half-width (U+FFA0) and Hangul full-width (U+3164), to represent the binary values 0 and 1, respectively, and converting each ASCII character in the JavaScript payload to their Hangul equivalents."The attacks were highly personalized, including non-public information, and the initial JavaScript would try to invoke a debugger breakpoint if it were being analyzed, detect a delay, and then abort the attack by redirecting to a benign website," Juniper Threat Labs said.Found this article interesting? • 11 New Movies on Netflix We Can't Wait To Watch This March
    www.cnet.com
Netflix's investment in original content has resulted in a huge catalog of great movies in the past few years. The platform is a source of reliable hits, from blockbuster-style action movies like Carry-On and Back In Action to Oscar-nominated films like Emilia Prez and Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl. This year, six Netflix originals received a total of 18 Oscar nominations, and with the ceremony airing on March 2, it's likely the streaming giant will reap a few new statuettes from its investment. This March marks the arrival of anticipated films like The Electric State, which is the latest film from the Russo brothers, the SpongeBob spin-off Plankton: The Movie and Revelations, a feature developed by the creators of the great South Korean series,Hellbound. There are also dozens of other great titles coming to the platform, from Saoirse Ronan in 2024's The Outrun to the A24 horror Talk To Me. Take a look below at some of the biggest movies coming to Netflix this month. Read more: The Hottest Movie Releases Coming in 2025See at Netflix Netflix CHAOS: The Manson Murders (March 7) Directed by legendary documentarian Errol Morris, CHAOS: The Manson Murders is based on the 2019 book CHAOS: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties by Tom O'Neill with Dan Piepenbring. The book presented new information about Charles Manson and the killing spree carried out by his 'family.' Contradicting much of what was set forth in Los Angeles prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi's book Helter Skelter, which was often seen as the definitive text about Manson and the Tate-LaBianca murders, the film offers new theories involving government cover-ups, drug tests and resurfaces old questions that have lingered about the case for decades. Netflix Plankton: The Movie (March 7) Plankton: The Movie is the second SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off film, following Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Story, which came out in 2024. In the new release, SpongeBob and his old foe, Plankton (voiced by Mr. Lawrence), are united with one mission: to stop Plankton's wife Karen from taking over the world. Oh, and did we mention it's a musical? Netflix Delicious (March 7) The new German film Delicious is the debut feature from writer-director Nele Mueller-Stfen, arriving to Netflix just weeks after premiering at the Berlin Film Festival. The thriller takes place during a German family's retreat at their villa in France. Their relaxing vacation takes a dark turn after they hit a stranger on the road and invite her in, drastically shifting the dynamic. Netflix The Electric State (March 14) The Electric State is the latest film from Anthony and Joe Russo, whose previous work on films like Avengers: Endgame and Infinity War primed them for this sci-fi adventure. Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown appears as Michelle, an orphan traveling across the country in search of her missing brother in the aftermath of a civil war between humanity and robots. Chris Pratt plays Keats, a smuggler helping her on the journey, and the cast is rounded out by Stanley Tucci, Giancarlo Esposito, Woody Norman and Ke Huy Quan, with loads of other celebs voicing the robots they meet along the way. StudioCanal The Outrun (March 18) Saoirse Ronan stars in 2024's The Outrun as Rona, a 29-year-old Londoner whose return to her home in Scotland's Orkney Islands requires her to face her past. Newly sober, Rona attempts to reconnect with family and friends while trying to find a new path for herself. The cast includes Slow Horses star Saskia Reeves, along with Stephen Dillane, Lauren Lyle and Paapa Essiedu. Netflix The Twister: Caught In The Storm (March 19) Netflix's feature-length documentary The Twister: Caught In The Storm is told from the perspective of a group of young people in Joplin, Missouri, as they witness a mile-wide tornado hit their hometown on high school graduation day in 2011. The film includes real-life footage, filmed by people in Joplin, that provides a heart-pounding account of theterrifying ordeal. Lionsgate Den of Thieves 2: Pantera (March 20) Gerard Butler and O'Shea Jackson Jr. returned for the sequel to their 2018 action thriller, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, which debuted in theaters this past January and arrives on Netflix on March 20. In the new film, Butler's Nick O'Brien is a sheriff in pursuit of a team of thieves called the Panthers, one of whom is Donnie Wilson (Jackson), a former Marine with a criminal history. While fans had to wait over six years for this sequel, expect a third film in the franchise sooner than that; it's already been green-lit. Netflix Revelations (March 21) Yeon Sang-ho and Choi Gyu-seok, creators of Netflix's thrilling Hellbound series, have returned to the platform with their latest project, a feature-length film called Revelations. The film, executive produced by Alfonso Cuarn, is set around the investigation of a missing person. As a local pastor, Sung Min-chan looks into the crime with the desire to punish the perpetrator, and the detective on the case, Lee Yeon-hui, is plagued by personal trauma that also affects his investigation. Ryu Jun-yeol, Shin Hyun-been and Shin Min-jae star in the film, which arrives on March 21. Netflix Little Siberia (March 21) Little Siberia is the first Finnish feature film on Netflix and will launch globally on March 21, 2025. Based on the novel of the same name written by author Antti Tuomainen, the film is based in the small village of Hurmevaara, which is shaken when a meteorite is discovered to have fallen from the sky one night. Joel, a priest in the tiny village, is entrusted to protect the meteorite before it's sent away to be studied, but at the same time, his life starts to unravel when his wife reveals she's pregnant and he knows he can't possibly be the father. Netflix The Life List (March 28) What do you call a bucket list that you set out to complete when you're still young? Let's call it a life list. Based on the book of the same name by Lori Nelson Spielman, The Life List stars Sofia Carson as Alex Rose, a young woman whose mother (played by Connie Britton) encourages her to complete the list of ambitions she wrote for herself when she was younger. On the road to finding herself, she unearths family secrets and finds romance. Netflix Promised Hearts (March 31) The Indonesian drama Promised Hearts explores the complexity of arranged marriage when a young woman, Niyala (Beby Tsabina), a doctor, is forced by her father to marry the son of the wealthiest businessman in their village in order to pay off her family's debt. The film, which explores Muslim identity and traditions, arrives just in time for Eid al-Fitr on March 31.

  • Solar and Wind Energy Are Surging But CO2 Is Still Climbing Because of Natural Gas Use
    www.scientificamerican.com
February 28, 20254 min readSolar and Wind Are Surging But CO2 Is Still ClimbingHere's WhyRenewable energy broke records last year, but so did gas generation. That's a climate problemBy Benjamin Storrow & E&E News Wind turbines at dusk in the Palm Springs desert. Stephanie Sawyer/Getty ImagesCLIMATEWIRE | Wind and solar generation eclipsed coal throughout 2024, marking the first time renewable power outperformed coal for a full year. But carbon emissions from electricity still climbed. Thats because natural gas also set record levels of generation last year. The burst of new gas pushed up greenhouse gases, offsetting modest carbon declines from coal and establishing gas as the leading source of climate pollution in the power industry another first. The twin developments highlight the diverging trends in Americas electricity landscape. Renewables have never been more important to the countrys grid, accounting for almost 16 percent of power generation last year. But gas is growing at an even faster clip, reflecting what many businesses see as its importance in meeting rising electricity demand from data centers. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. The shift raises questions about the potential for future emissions cuts from power plants, which have slashed climate pollution at a faster rate than any other sector of the U.S. economy.I think it's kind of an interesting moment to just reflect on what has been happening and where we're going and what it implies, said Robbie Orvis, an energy modeler at the clean energy think tank Energy Innovation. The current administration has highlighted the need to increase energy supply, including electricity. They've put a focus on supporting the AI build-out in the country with data centers. And that's coming at a time when the number one source of new power is solar and wind.Renewables have long been expected to overtake coal. A decade of coal plant retirements and renewable energy installations have seen the technologies swap positions in the countrys power stack. In 2022, the combination of wind, solar and other renewables like hydropower and geothermal collectively eclipsed coal. Now, wind and solar are doing it on their own. Data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration this week shows that wind and utility-scale solar generated a combined 669 terawatt-hours of electricity last year, compared to coals 652TWh, the agency said. Renewable generation climbed to 756 TWh when accounting for solar thermal and small scale solar production. The milestone is notable. A decade ago, coal generated almost 40 percent of U.S. power generation while wind and solar accounted for less than 5 percent. In 2024, wind and solar nudged out coal, accounting for 15.5 percent of utility power generation to 15.2 percent for coal. The tipping point followed a surge in solar installations last year. The 30 GW of new solar capacity installed in 2024 smashed the previous record of 19 GW set in 2023. Wind installed another 5 GW, the sectors lowest installation total since 2014. Even so, the combination was enough to push power generation from the two industries past coal, which saw 4.5 GW of capacity shut down last year. That was the lowest level of coal retirements since 2011.The challenge from a climate perspective is that gas generation has grown at an even faster clip than renewables over the last decade. Gas generation is up 66 percent, or 738 TWh, between 2014 and 2024, according to EIA figures. Wind and solar are up 240 percent over that time but have added less in absolute terms: 471 TWh.In previous years, the combination of more gas, more renewables and less coal pushed emissions from the power sector down. The sector's emissions last year were 1.54 billion tons, or 29 percent below 2014 levels, according to EPA data. There was another factor: In the past, power demand was relatively flat, meaning that high-emission coal was effectively replaced by a cleaner alternative. But that trend is ending. Last year, power generation rose 3 percent to meet an increase in electricity demand due to an especially hot summer and mounting needs from data centers. So while the country added more low-emission power, it was helping satisfy increased demand instead of replacing dirtier alternatives. Put differently, the 1.54 billion tons of CO2 emitted by U.S. power plants last year was essentially unchanged from 2023, when power plants emitted 1.52 billion tons of CO2.Industry projections show power demand growing rapidly in the coming years, mostly due to data centers but also because of a growing number of electric vehicles and manufacturing operations. If all we do is build more natural gas, our emissions are not going to go down. They might stay flat as they did last year, said Costa Samaras, a professor who studies the energy industry at Carnegie Mellon University and served as a climate adviser in the Biden administration. Sooner or later, were going to run out of coal to displace. This story also appears in Energywire.Reprinted from E&E News with permission from POLITICO, LLC. Copyright 2025.
