It's a dangerous scam Kurt the CyberGuy breaks down why the "Your Apple ID has been temporarily disabled" email is most likely a scam. Apple makes it possible to store a virtual copy of your trusty DMV driver's license in your Apple Wallet, with Arizona and Georgia being the first states to adopt it.By storing your driver's license in your Apple Wallet, leaving your house with only your phone can become possible, making it an ideal solution for commuters and other travelers.Best of all, your digital ID might even be more secure than your physical ID, thanks to the newest ISO 18013-5 security requirements and features for all digital IDs.STAY PROTECTED & INFORMED! These are the states that currently allow you to store your digital driver's license in your Apple Wallet:ArizonaCaliforniaColoradoGeorgiaHawaiiIowaMarylandNew MexicoOhioPuerto RicoWHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?Why should you store your driver's license in Apple Wallet?Storing your Apple ID in your Apple Wallet may be more secure than carrying a physical card that can be lost easily. Additionally, your digital ID doesn't contain as much visible personal information as a physical ID card. Digital IDs stored in your Apple Wallet do not display personal information other than your full name. To display things such as your address, date of birth and so on, you must sign in with Face ID or Touch ID.Information is only ever transferred from your Apple Wallet via NFC, which uses an encrypted Bluetooth data connection. This means nothing can be easily or quickly copied. Whenever you have to hand your phone over to a police officer or TSA agent, they won't see your personal information without authentication from you.Using your digital ID with Apple Wallet from your iPhone or Apple Watch works similarly to Apple Pay. You hold the device near the reader, and a screen will appear telling you exactly which information you will share. Next, you'll double-tap the side button to approve it, as if you were paying with Apple Pay. Storing your driver's license in your Apple Wallet (Apple)What information is stored in my digital ID?With digital IDs, only the information needed and nothing more can be transferred easily. For example, a security guard who needs to check your ID at a venue entrance would have a reader that shows your ID photo and confirms if you're over 21. They wouldn't see things like your ID number, address or actual date of birth, simplifying the process for you and the worker and preventing your personal info from being copied. At the time of publishing, police agencies do not accept digital IDs as driver's licenses, so you'll need to have your physical ID when driving. However, the TSA does accept digital IDs with digital ID readers atseveral airports, and a few concert venues have begun accepting digital IDs. Additionally, apps that require an ID, such as car rental apps or alcohol delivery services, can use the info stored in your Apple Wallet to provide proof of age.How to add your driver's license to Apple WalletFollow these steps to add your driver's license or ID card to Apple Wallet:Open theWallet app on your iPhoneTap the Add (+) button in the upper-right cornerTapDriver's License or State IDSelect your state and press continueNext, you will be asked to takephotos of your driver's license, front and backYou will need to takematching photos of yourself. • Behind the scenes at Amazon UKs robotic-powered warehouse
    www.computerweekly.com
The day before Computer Weekly visited Amazons BRS2 fulfilment centre in Swindon, the tech and retail giant announced the imminent launch of drone deliveries in the UK.Its statement said a planning application with the local authority is being lodged for flight operations facilities at the distribution hub and authorisation from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to fly drones in the airspace is still required. But Amazon will be hiring for staff to run the operation as soon as it is permitted to do so.Amazon has promised to work closely with the CAA as the organisation develops the regulatory framework to make commercial drone delivery in the UK a reality, but it seems consumers in the north-east will soon be able to order selected items directly from the Amazon app or website and receive those goods via drone. There are no Amazon drones in Swindon, which opened in 2021, and no immediate plans to introduce them but our tour of the site underlines the innovation prowess and tech capability behind an organisation that generated 11% UK retail revenue growth in 2023-24 to hit 27bn.With the name BRS2, the 500,000ft2 Amazon Swindon site at Symmetry Park prompts an image of robots prior to entry. And the place lives up to its robotic-sounding name inside.Automation equipment manufactured by Dutch company Vanderlande is put to use from the moment goods arrive as they come straight off the back of trucks onto a telescopic conveyor. From there, they are fast-tracked to the three robot-heavy floors above or to a manned receive line.Fulfilment centres like the one at Swindon are the link in the Amazon UK supply chain responsible for receiving goods from large fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and small business customers before processing, storing, picking and packing those goods for distribution to regional delivery centres across the UK as required. Swindon doesnt handle the biggest and bulkiest lines.Staff on the receive lines unload products into black tote boxes, which are then sent upstairs on conveyors to stow stations, where teams of stowers are instructed by computer systems which pods to place items into. The system identifies which compartment of the pod is the optimum position for each item to be stowed.Pods store the inventory until it is needed for an order, and they sit on top of automated guided robots (AGR) which move around and are programmed to line up the goods for picking when required. The robots are continually active and have a charging station they automatically return to when a power top-up is required.Amazon acquired Kiva Systems in 2012, and the AGRs are the modern iteration of this manufacturers robots. They are known internally as Hercules, can each lift 1,200 lb, and they navigate around the site using QR code-esque floor symbols. There are dozens of engineers on each floor, some dedicated to managing the robots and others focusing on the wider machinery. Anyone who enters the caged pod area must wear aThe fulfilment centre employs around 2,000 people on a variety of contracts, and the sites general manager, David Tindal, says: Man and machine is the future. Automation is making it safer and more comfortable in the warehouse. He says staff are taught to think like a customer, claiming that they have more skilled jobs as a result of the tech deployment, with a vital role in not letting the wrong product go through.Tindals favourite technology at the Swindon site is the sorter, which neatly directs parcels off the conveyor system to the right place ready for their onward journey. But a more recent transformative piece of tech, Tindal says, is the computer vision implemented on the conveyor to check for any defects to the goods or packaging before items leave the building. In Swindon, the SICK-manufactured sensor above the conveyor can automatically pick up whether a parcel is suitable for sending out or can identify potential problems before they arise.Systems of this nature began appearing in Amazons US operations in May 2023, but Swindon was one of the first UK sites to implement the tech. Tindal says it is effective at identifying whether packaging has not been prepared accordingly for example, if tape is unsticking or if there are labelling irregularities that might provide an early indication of poor printer health.Amazon Swindon was an early UK adopter of the imaging sensor techWithout these checks, the parcel might get all the way to the customer with something missing, but the tech provides the feedback for us without anyone looking, he comments, adding it tracks back problems to source. The technology is another checking layer for Amazon, which prides itself on speedy and reliable customer service. The Swindon site handles millions of parcels a week and, although no specific figures are mentioned by Tindal, the peak period from Black Friday to Christmas 2024 broke records for the number of packages processed by the centre.Reflecting on the attitude to artificial intelligence (AI) across the Swindon workforce, the general manager says AI is effectively invisible to them. The systems working smoothly is whats important to them, he adds.As we talk in the general managers office, which houses the senior team and has several screens monitoring site performance, Tindal says he encourages all managers to experiment with the new strands of AI, such as generative AI, because he feels it will help us all to get up to a base level so we can use it more. You learn the strengths and weaknesses and that makes it easier to spot applications where it will help us do things, he reflects.Tindal calls the automation and AI at Amazons sites a gamechanger in terms of productivity and essential for supporting the companys speedy fulfilment customer promise. The tech and processes are ever evolving often based on staff feedback. One of Amazons strengths is we have so many warehouse and we put a lot of effort into developing the best possible systems and then roll them out across the world, he adds. The general manager also talks of the difficult tension to get all staff following precise standards while also leaving room for them to generate ideas for improvement. He welcomes an entrepreneurial mindset in his staff and chats regularly to his colleagues during the tour.Towards the end of a products time at Swindon, it will reach the packing station. Amazon as is the case with other retailers has faced regular criticism for excess packaging which creates waste, and it is making a concerted effort to minimise its use of materials and ensure packaging size matches product size.As the items arrive at the packing station, packers will be informed by their computer system what type of cardboard-only packaging is required. There will also be intermittent SIOC [ship in own case] or SIOB [ship in own bag] on-screen alerts that accompany the arrival of a package, prompting workers not to add further packaging. This is AI-powered tech in action once again, but the packer has the power to override decisions and select what they deem to be the most appropriate packaging.Amazon drones may soon start making deliveries to customers in the north-east, which despite several trials from the likes of Boots and Tesco would be a commercial first for the UK and Ireland. Evidence from Swindon is that this is simply the next step on the tech and automation path Amazon has long been treading.Read more about retail technologyRetailers and carriers met for the annual Delivery Conference in February, discussing how to use tech and data to drive improvements in e-commerce.Real-life pilot projects show the potential, but industry mindset change is required to help retail and wholesale fleets drive major decarbonisation gains in the year ahead.

  • Microsoft: nearly one million devices hit by malware spread through ads on illegal streaming websites
    www.techspot.com
In brief: If you're going to visit websites that host pirated video streams, you'd better be willing to accept the risks. That's something owners of the one million devices affected by a malware campaign originating from these sites might not have considered. Microsoft writes that its threat analysis team detected a large-scale malvertising campaign that impacted nearly one million devices globally in December 2024.The company traced the attack back to two illegal streaming websites movies7 and 0123movie embedded with malvertising redirectors. Attackers injected the ads into videos the sites hosted. These generated pay-per-view or pay-per-click revenue from malvertising platforms and subsequently routed traffic through one or two additional malicious redirectors.Victims were eventually led to another website, such as tech support scam website, which then redirected to GitHub.The GitHub repositories, which have since been taken down, stored malware used to deploy additional malicious files and scripts. Once someone had downloaded the malware, it was used to collect system information and deploy second-stage payloads to exfiltrate documents and data.A third-stage PowerShell script payload then downloaded the NetSupport remote access trojan (RAT) from a command-and-control server and set persistence in the registry. The RAT could deliver the Lumma information stealer malware or an updated version of the Doenerium infostealer. The malware also allowed attackers to spy a on victims' browsing activity and even interact with an active browser, including Firefox, Chrome, and Edge. The first-stage payloads were digitally signed with a newly created certificate and included some legitimate files to hide their true nature. A total of twelve different certificates were identified, all of which were later revoked. // Related StoriesWhile GitHub was the primary platform used in the delivery of these payloads, Microsoft also found one payload hosted on Discord and another on Dropbox. As with GitHub, the pages that hosted the malware on these platforms have been removed.Microsoft writes that the campaign was indiscriminate in nature, impacting both consumer and enterprise devices. It also notes that Windows' Microsoft Defender software is able to detect and flag the malware used in the attack.

  • Import tariffs may accelerate the death of physical video games
    www.techspot.com
The big picture: Although the Trump administration just announced a one-month delay on most imports from Canada and Mexico, the eventual resumption of tariffs on Mexican goods could significantly impact the production of physical video games. This unintended consequence may compound the challenges already expected to slow the gaming industry due to existing tariffs on Chinese imports. Analysts predict that a 25 percent tariff on goods imported from Mexico would substantially affect the U.S. retail console game market. Since Mexico plays a crucial role in physical game production, these import duties could lead to higher prices or an increased shift toward digital-only game releases. While video game discs sold in the U.S. were once manufactured domestically, analysts Mat Piscatella of Circana and Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners note that much of the industry's critical production infrastructure has since moved to Mexico. Historically, nearly all of Sony's discs were produced at an Indiana plant, which now mostly makes the boxes for PlayStation 5 game cases.Very small piece of all this, but it wouldn't surprise me to see physical games that would be subject to tariffs simply not get made, with pubs moving to an all digital strategy. What a mess.[image or embed] Mat Piscatella (@matpiscatella.bsky.social) March 4, 2025 at 8:21 AMPresident Trump has repeatedly threatened to impose a 25 percent tariff on various imports from Canada and Mexico. The administration has now delayed the decision for a second time, but once the delay expires, the resulting cost increases could hit both game publishers and retailers.Meanwhile, the existing 20 percent tariff on Chinese imports is expected to continue driving up hardware prices. // Related StoriesGame companies might respond by passing these costs onto consumers, but the impact would likely extend beyond physical game prices. While digital sales eliminate the costs of manufacturing discs and sharing revenue with retailers, publishers often pocket the difference rather than reducing digital game prices potentially straining their relationships with retailers.Click to enlargeAnother likely response is an acceleration of digital-only releases. While PC games on discs have been nearly nonexistent for years in most regions (oddly, my last physical PC game was Ghostwire: Tokyo, which launched in 2022), full-priced digital-only console games remain rare.Despite a significant shift toward digital spending on consoles physical game sales have halved since 2021 many players still prefer owning discs they can trade or lend to friends.A rare exception was Alan Wake 2, which launched without a physical edition in 2023. However, Remedy mitigated backlash by pricing the digital console versions at $59.99 instead of the now-standard $69.99 and keeping that price for the 2024 physical deluxe edition. The PC version remains at $49.99, but few expect other publishers to be as consumer-friendly if they transition to digital-only releases.Moving disc manufacturing back to the U.S. would be costly and time-consuming. Given the ongoing decline in retail game sales, many publishers may see little incentive to make that investment further reinforcing the industry's gradual move away from physical media.

  • Mickey 17 ending, explained
    www.digitaltrends.com
Table of ContentsTable of ContentsWhats the story of Mickey 17?What does it all mean? After several years of waiting, director Bong Joon-hos latest sci-fi comedy film, Mickey 17, has finally premiered in theaters. Adapted from Edward Ashtons novel Mickey7, Bongs movie follows Mickey, a man down on his luck who signs up to be an expendable laborer on the ice planet Niflheim for a fresh start. However, he starts fresh again and again as his job forces him to die and be reborn in a cloned body, eventually fighting for his life as a war with Niflheims native creatures breaks out.Its a very different story from Bongs more grounded black comedy Parasite. Nevertheless, Bong delivers another dark satire with Mickey 17s story, which holds several surprises and many implications about humanity and its future. At the same time, it gives audiences an idea of where Bong and his new sci-fi film franchise could go from here.Recommended VideosWarner Bros. Pictures / Warner Bros. PicturesMickey 17 shows Mickey Barnes and his business partner Timo on the run from a loan shark after their macaron store fails. Hoping to escape their debts and deaths, the duo signs up for a mission to colonize Niflheim led by the fascist politician Kenneth Marshall and his wife, Ylfa. As an expendable, Mickey is subjected to several life-threatening tasks during his trip to Niflheim. The ships scientists essentially treat him like a lab rat, repeatedly killing him in order to test chemical weapons or create vaccines to help the crew survive in their new world.RelatedThough Mickeys 17th iteration falls into a crevice and is left for dead, he is rescued by the Niflheims inhabitants, the Creepers. Making his way back to the ship, Mickey 17 sees another clone has been generated, making the two of them multiples. Since multiples are outlawed after a serial killer cloned himself to carry out murders, Mickeys 17 and 18 try to kill each other before their superiors execute them both. Unfortunately, they are eventually discovered and imprisoned with their love interest Nasha. As punishment for their crimes, Marshall sends out the two Mickeys to kill the swarm of Creepers surrounding the ship, as the former is holding one of their young captives. Using a hi-tech translator, the Mickeys agree to return the child Creeper and kill one human in order to even the scales tipped by another Creepers death at the crews hands. With that, Nasha and her allies lead a rebellion against Marshall and Ylfa and return the little Creeper to its kind. However, Mickey 18 blows up Marshall and himself with a bomb vest, killing them both and fulfilling the bargain, making peace with the Creepers.Warner Bros. PicturesMickey, Nasha, and the rebel allies are imprisoned for their uprising. Fortunately, they are exonerated, and Nasha becomes a leading figure in the colony of Niflheim. Thanks to her, the expendables program is banned, and Mickey blows up the printing machine used to generate clones of himself. Before the latter destroys it, he has a nightmare about Ylfa, who died earlier, using the printer to create a clone of Marshall, arguing that this is what Mickey wanted.Despite it being a dream, this image of Ylfa cloning Marshall symbolizes how the fascism that they embodied hasnt died, as another person like them could rise to power one day as long as people continue to perpetuate their evil ideas. This scene also conveys Mickeys fear of destroying the expendable printer, as death for him then would truly be final. Mickey chooses not to let his fear control him, waking up from his nightmare and destroying the printer, guaranteeing that neither he nor Marshall will be resurrected. It also shows how Mickey has finally embraced himself as a single person, with the films title shifting from Mickey 17 to Mickey Barnes to cement this face.Mickey 17 doesnt explicitly set up a sequel, but Edward Ashton has published a sequel to Mickey7:Antimatter Blues. This second novel displays the potential for a follow-up to Bong Joon-hos film, as it follows Mickey on another adventure to save his colony by restoring its power, all while learning to live his life without the luxury of coming back as a clone. This premise aligns with how Mickey rid himself of all cloning technology at the end of the film, meaning a sequel movie could have the same premise.Mickeys nightmare in the film could even hint at a new villain like Marshall and Ylfa appear the sequel, continuing the cycle of oppression that they carried out in the original movie. While this would be an intriguing follow-up film, Mickey 17 presented a satisfying narrative that has wrapped itself up within its own story. Marshall and Ylfas evil may return in some other form, but Mickey Barnes seems ready to live his new life as a person of Niflheim.Editors Recommendations

Based on the novel by Edward Ashton, this film features actor Robert Pattinson (The Batman) as Mickey Barnes, who agrees to become an expendable worker on the ice planet Niflheim, who gets cloned every time he dies on the job helping humanity create a colony on this strange, new world.Recommended VideosAnticipation for Bongs next film after Parasite has been through the roof, with fans holding their breaths as Mickey 17 faced delays. Hopes for this film were high, and it does have its fair share of flaws. Nevertheless, Mickey 17 succeeded in presenting the kind of shocking, satirical, and insightful slice of cinema one would expect from Bong, making for an incredible new adventure from the acclaimed auteur.Warner Bros. Pictures / Warner Bros. PicturesThis comedic sci-fi film presents traces of Metropolis and Starship Troopers in terms of plot, tone, and visuals (theres also some of Goodfellas in there). Bong Joon-ho still brings his trademark brand of dark, quirky humor to the story to present something completely different. Featuring inept scientists, chainsaw-wielding mobsters, a clone throuple, wooly alien iceworms, and some guy wearing a pigeon costume for some reason, Mickey 17 boldly goes where no sci-fi film has gone before. But at the heart of the mind-boggling story is Mickeys journey toward self-love and acceptance. The way Mickey frames his miserable job as punishment for his perceived role in his mothers car accident adds great emotional depth to this morbid tale of death and rebirth. Even when Mickey ends up as two Multiples, they remain two halves of the same whole with the way they guide each other, creating satisfying arcs for them both. In the end, despite the political, religious, and philosophical discourse, the film shows that Mickey is far from expendable, no matter how many times he is cloned.Warner Bros. Pictures / Warner Bros. PicturesLike Parasite and 2013s Snowpiercer, Bong Joon-ho presents another satire about social class as lower-class laborers like Mickey are sent to die on the job in the name of manifest destiny, getting very little in return from their wealthy overlord. The social commentary hits closer to home for U.S. audiences, as Mickey 17 presents a timely parody of American politics with Mark Ruffalo playing the charismatic but boneheaded politician Kenneth Marshall. As Marshall and his coddling wife Ylfa lead the colonization of Niflheim, their goal of breeding their own pure human race on the ice planet and wiping out the native Creepers screams Nazi rhetoric, reflecting how fascist ideology has been ingrained in mainstream American politics. Even after Marshall is killed, his supporters and critics cant stop arguing with each other an apt representation of the U.S.s current political situation.Robert Pattinson carries the film with his dual performance as Mickeys 17 and 18. Theres a clear contrast between these two Multiples, with Pattinson disappearing into his roles as self-pitying 17 and the assertive but violent 18. Likewise, Ruffalo and Collette stand out as the films cartoonishly evil and dimwitted villains. Naomi Ackie shines just as bright with her portrayal of Nasha, as he instills a healthy dose of fear, rage, love, and humor into her character. Her angry rant to Marshalls face alone over his immoral buffoonery deserves an award. However, one cant help but feel like the film underutilized Steven Yeun and Anamaria Vartolomeis characters. Yeuns Timo seems to fade into the background as the story focuses on Mickey and his clones, with the film skimming through their mob debt subplot. Vartolomeis Kai also showed a lot more potential in Mickey 17, especially with the formers performance. Her grief over her friends death and her experiences with her corrupt superiors showed there was a lot more room for growth. Unfortunately, her character gets sidelined for most of the films second half, with her story getting a rushed conclusion. While its difficult to match the quality and acclaim of 2019s Parasite, Mickey 17 is still a fantastic sci-fi film that is definitely worth the six-year wait. Bong Joon-ho has proven many times that he is a master of his craft, having directed exceptional films in multiple genres. However, the Oscar-winning director has not lost his edge with Mickey 17.While the film struggles to juggle its many moving parts, it functions incredibly well as it presents an insightful and wildly entertaining film touching upon several relevant issues. Overall, Mickey 17 is a powerful tale that explores ones true value, whether theyre a clone or a crawling little alien, making it an outstanding addition to Bongs filmography.Mickey 17 is now playing in theaters.Editors RecommendationsRobert Pattinsons unlikely hero keeps dying in Mickey 17 trailer
