Daredevil: Born Again debuted its first two episodes on March 4, and theMarvel revivalwill continue its run in the month of March and into April. It's been roughly 10 years since Netflix launched its Daredevil TV show and about three years since Marvel announced it would bring Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock back to our screens. The series features Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, Jon Bernthal's Punisher and the original show's versions of Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) and Karen Page (played by Deborah Ann Woll).Executive producer Sana Amanat and showrunner/executive producer Dario Scardapane shared that fans will see that the new series has a connective thread to the first iteration but is also its own story.Returning viewers to the streets of New York City, Daredevil: Born Again kicks off with Matt, Foggy and Karen in a good space, and Fisk pursuing the political ambitions he put into motion at the end of Echo. As crime levels increase, friction between Kingpin and Daredevil reignites but a new villain comes on the scene. It will be a battle of the dark sides, within and in the streets.According to production notes for the series, both men will have inner conflict. "We had to do parallel paths. Both tried so hard to be something else: 'I'm Matt Murdock. I'm just a lawyer. I'm not Daredevil anymore.' 'I'm Wilson Fisk, mayor of New York City. I'm doing good things for people,'" Scardapane said. "We wanted to bring that tension to a place where they literally can't sustain it and things start to unravel and explode."Keep reading to learn when and where to watch season 1 of Marvel's Daredevil: Born Again.Read more:The TV Shows We Can't Wait to See in 2025Episode release schedule for 'Daredevil: Born Again'The first two episodes of Daredevil: Born Again premiered on Disney Plus on March 4 and episode 3 will follow the same schedule, dropping on Tuesday, March 11 at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.Season 1 has nine episodes, but we will have to wait for season 2's next batch of episodes as the story has been split into two installments. • You're Already Eating Enough Protein. Here's What Experts Say You Should Worry About Instead.
    www.cnet.com
If you've been concerned that maybe you should increase your protein quota, you'd be relieved to know that you may be eating enough as is. According to experts, you're probably already getting all (or more than enough) the protein you need in your daily diet. But if that's the case, why is everyone on social media constantly showing different ways to sneak in protein into every meal?Similar to counting calories, the protein goals trend has gotten out of hand, causing people to buy expensive protein bars, shakes and slabs of meat all in the name of more protein. According to Dr. Andrew Freeman, a cardiologist at National Jewish Health in Denver, it's actually "extremely uncommon" if not "nearly impossible" to be deficient in protein, at least in the US, where there's an abundance of food.So what's the deal with this protein push by almost every wellness influencer you follow? You're likely getting enough protein without even tryingAs long as you're not heavily restricting yourself and getting enough calories to fuel your body, you're probably hitting your protein goals just by eating a typical American diet. While some people may need more to feel satisfied and strong or to maximize their muscle gains in the gym, the reality for many Americans might be that they meet their protein requirements through their daily diet. For some, that requirement may be well below 100 grams, which is one elusiveprotein goaloften touted, including by the wellness team here at CNET."People are absolutely obsessed with protein," Freeman said, pointing to the fact it's also likely you'll hit your "protein goals" even if you're eating a plant-based diet, so long as it's varied and full. One potentially influencing factor toward the protein goal trend is the rise in interest in the carnivore diet, which prioritizes meat consumption."What most people forget is some of earth's biggest and strongest mammals, they're all plant-based," Freeman said. "When was the last time you saw a protein-deficient gorilla or elephant?"Americans, in particular, have a complicated and sometimes disordered relationship with food when we're not obsessing over getting enough of something (#proteingoals), we're restricting something else (think the villainization of fats and carbs). Examples of some diets that oscillate between these extremes include the ketogenic diet, the carnivore diet, calorie-counting apps and taking extra time to make complicated drinks in the name of weight loss. This would be more defensible if we were reaping the health benefits of sticking to these diets, but instead, Americans are leaders in chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes (preventable and often reversible through diet). Many people also suffer a reduced quality of life from restricting themselves or following diets that may or may not meaningfully improve their health down the line, and may also inspire shame or eating disorders. Not to mention, most of us are actually deficient in fiber, and a good chunk of us are low in other very important nutrients, such as iron, vitamin D and more.In fact, all the focus on protein ends up causing people to overlook other nutrients their body needs that they can't get from protein. Fiber, for example, is a key carbohydrate that is found mainly in plants and should also be prioritized, especially with the rising rates in colorectal cancer among people younger than 50 years old.Of course, this is absolutely not to say that protein isn't important, or that some people need more than others based on their activity level or the muscle build they're going for. Here, we merely take a minute to plead the case that, when it comes to protein, you may be able to cool it a bit. InstagramHow much protein should you actually be eating?Look, the intro to this topic came on a little strong, so it is important to take a moment and stress how protein is an absolutely vital nutrient: protein containsamino acids, which build our bodies and help them function. If we didn't eat protein, we'd be dead.To get a baseline of how much we need to support our needs, there's fortunately a recommended daily amount, or RDA, of protein. This is 0.8-gram of protein per kilogram of body weight. (There are about 2.2 pounds in one kg.) This means a person who weighs 200 pounds needs about 73 grams of protein to meet their needs and not be deficient.Where it gets tricky is deciphering exactly how much protein you need not only to stay alive, but to thrive. Like every health "thing," what's best for you will depend on your body and your activity level, for example. But even taking this into account, you may not have to work as hard as you think to get adequate protein, even if you're hitting the gym regularly. In a 2023podcast hosted by Zoe, a nutrition science company and maker of at-home gut microbiome test kits, Stanford University professor and nutrition researcher Christopher Gardner explained why fears of falling short in the protein department are often overblown."When the US comes up with recommended daily allowances for protein, vitamins and minerals, the standard approach is to take two standard deviations above the average," Gardner explained in the podcast. For the 0.8-gram of protein per kilogram of weight, he said, "You've picked a number that should be adequate for 97.5% of the population."But what if you're above average? Chances are, you're not."To me, it's the American idea of 'that's what the RDA is, but I know I'm above average, so let me make sure I get some extra here,'" Gardner explained."It was built in to recognize that some people need more [protein]," he continued, going on to explain that when you're working out heavily, you're naturally going to feel hungrier, which will prompt you to eat more -- which means (for most people), naturally eating more protein. But what if you want to really gain muscle? To its credit, and in a refreshing turn of American-diet events, the protein goal trend is focused on adding rather than restricting. And if you're into intense weightlifting, or if you want to gain muscle, you will need more. But chances are that "more" is not as much more as you might think -- at least if you're considering consciously adding protein through shakes and other supplements. If you really want to build muscle or are seriously into weight lifting, estimates on how much "extra" protein you need varies, and the best (and safest) advice is always to talk to your doctor or nutritionist to take your whole health and lifestyle into account. But some estimatesland around 1.2 to 1.7 grams per kilogram of weight. Others areeven higher, at up to 2 grams per kilogram. This discussion assumes you enjoy counting your macros, though. If you eat when you're hungry, fuel up after a hard workout and choose foods that are rich in proteinand also part of a well-balanced diet, you should be good to go.In addition to weightlifting, Freeman said that people with medical concerns, such as undergoing surgery or recovering from burns, need more protein. Pregnancyand older adulthood are other instances when people's protein requirement goes up a bit in relation to their calorie intake. Yaorusheng/Moment via Getty ImagesCan you get too much protein? What about protein's benefits?High protein consumption makes the kidneys work harder, which may be a concern for some and is one reason parents should be wary of giving kids extra protein supplements, according to the Cleveland Clinic. However, hitting your high protein goals or even exceeding them shouldn't be harmful for most people, though keep in mind that after they're broken down into those vital amino acids and the energy is expended, excess protein is stored as fat if not used for energy. Now for a benefit: In addition to overall body function and muscle building, protein is very filling and satiating. This means a protein-rich meal may aid in weight loss (if that's your goal) because it keeps you full for longer when compared, for example, to a meal that's more carb-heavy and lacking in protein.Craving protein? You could be low in ironAbout 95% of Americans aren't eating enough fiber, according to research from 2016. Fiber is found in plant-based foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, seeds and more.Nearly one in three of us are also low in iron, which is where things get interesting in the protein discussion, because excellent sources of protein are often excellent sources of iron. (Steak and other red meat, for example.) However, there are plant-based foods like dark greens that are high in iron and also in fiber.Vitamin D, a nutrient we can get from the sun as well as from our food, is also one Americans tend to be lower in. This is especially notable during the cooler months.Unfortunately, the advice for how to best meet your nutritional needs isn't flashy and mimics previous guidance: Eat a full diet full of variety and color, prioritizing foods like vegetables, healthy fats and, yes, protein. You just don't need to obsess about it.

  • Our Narrow View of Masculinity Is Hurting Boys
    www.scientificamerican.com
OpinionMarch 10, 20256 min readOur Narrow View of Masculinity Is Hurting BoysMasculinity isnt toxic by itself, but the strain boys feel from society and parents to meet unrealistic expectations isBy Adam Stanaland edited by Megha Satyanarayana Matt Porteous/Getty ImagesEach semester, I ask my psychology students to imagine how people would grow up, think and act in a world without societal rules and expectations. This may seem like an easy task, but their initial answers are similar to what youd expect a fish to say if asked what its like to live in water. What norms? they ask. This is especially the case for the young men who, like me, had never explicitly questioned messages like, Boys dont cry and Be a man before going to college. Amid a resurgence of rigid masculinityand as a psychologist who studies these issuesIve grown increasingly concerned with these unacknowledged pressures that can thwart the healthy development of boys and young men. This question I pose to my students is based on research I and others did a couple of years ago, looking at how pervasive social norms, especially current views of masculinity, can shape people often in unideal ways. As Ive noted before in Scientific American, many boys and men report feeling pressured to be stereotypically masculine. This means, for example, pressure to be tough (physical and emotionally), able to fix things and in positions of power what we call hegemonic masculinity. These pressure are often rooted in fundamentally human needs, such as mens desire to provide for their families, or simply to belong and accepted by others.Importantly, weve found that pressure to be a certain kind of masculine leads to aggressive thoughts and feelings, especially among adolescent boys and young adult men who are in throes of forming an identity. To me, its not masculinity that is inherently bad or toxic. Rather, problems arise when rigid masculinity is pressured onto boys and men.On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today. In psychology, pressure is the antithesis of autonomyor the basic human need to act in line with ones true self. This is why acting out manliness for pressured reasons leads to fragile masculine identities. Instead of a healthy identity rooted in authenticity and autonomy, fragility stems from an insecure need for external validation. As a result, these boys and men feel compelled to prove their manhood to others through stereotypically masculine means. We see the results in the disproportionate rates of mens gun violence, homophobia, sexual aggression, political bigotry and even anti-environmental behavior, compared to women.Against this, parents are a critical part of how boys see themselves, and how they understand masculinity. With the rise of a masculinity that is increasingly pressuring, parents can help boys develop more expansive identities. This is not about demonizing one idea of masculinity, or boys and men as group, but reducing the pressure to be a narrowly defined man. Genuine and compassionate versions of masculinity exist, and its okay for boys to take those paths. Getting there means conversation, modeling desired behavior, and reckoning with our own definitions of what a man is. But it matters, because this pressure to conform to narrow norms is hurting boys. While we were collecting data on boys aggression, we also surveyed their parents, asking them to agree or disagree with statements relating to current beliefs about masculinity. Some of these items had to do with relatively benign beliefslike, whether men should be handyand some were more consequential, such as beliefs about homophobia and gender inequality. We found that parents beliefs about hegemonic masculinity related to pressure their sons reported to be stereotypically masculine; that is, parents who simply believed that men should have status and power over others had sons (some as young as 10) who reported feeling pressured to be manly. Its no surprise, then, that these were the boys who responded aggressively when we challenged their manhood, especially when they were already in the throes of puberty. These results tell us there is a consequence to raising boys in a mans world: living up to these expectations is stressing them out. We know this because they report being bullied, or shut out of peer groups. They tell us they have low self-esteem. In their book on the psychology of gender relations between women and men, Laurie Rudman and Peter Glick propose that we are powerfully shaped by how societies are structuredwith men most often at the top and women (and people of other genders) situated below them. For proof, look no further than government and business in the U.S. where only 27 percent of federal lawmakers, 10 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs and 0 percent of presidents are women.Immediately, we think about what these disparities mean for girls, and we should, but to the extent that girls receive messages that they cant get to the top, many boys are hearing that they must get to the top. Its certainly a double-edged sword. Boys and men are afforded power and privilege, yet many are also pressured to earn and maintain it.AleksandarNakic/Getty ImagesWeve made great strides in inspiring girls to achieve just as well as boys (and even better)though there is still much work to do hereyet weve so far failed to encourage boys to aspire toward culturally feminized work and communal careers in fields such as nursing, child care and early-childhood education. Instead, in many capitalist cultures across the world, we continue to push and pressure our boys away from anything remotely feminineaway from the innate nurturing and caring tendencies that they demonstrate in childhoodand toward the pinnacles of what we (as societies) have defined as success.Redefining masculinity starts with you. Not every expression or experiment in masculinity will be safe for your child to pursue, especially in certain areas of the areas of the world. (For example, we found that parents in conservative parts of the U.S. put significant pressure on their sons to be masculine, which may be rooted in a fear of openly challenging masculinity norms.) But, as psychologist Onnie Rogers notes, we can encourage boys to run with intentionality in the opposite direction, against the grain, and more importantly, toward [their] full humanity, and this means that ideas around masculinity are worth talking about. As you talk to, play with, observe and guide your sons along their paths, here are some ideas to consider, what I think of as four Rs to get you started:Realize that you can have these hard conversations; that you can intervene and guide. Although you might feel like your sons will develop in ways beyond your control, you do have a significant effect on your childrens core beliefs, values and worldviews. Psychologist Sylvia Perry recently wrote in this very column about how children and young adults can handle hard conversations about race. They can understand complex ideas, histories and perspectives about gender, too.Reconsider the messages boys are sent (and not sent), both explicitly and implicitly. Children learn about gender through many pathwayssummed up as direct teaching, experiencing, and modeling. You might try to directly teach your boys to combat gender stereotypes and even explicitly encourage them to take part in feminine activities; but arguably more important is what they learn by watching you and what they experience in their own worlds. Whats vital is that boys be given the space to develop apart from pressures to be masculine or feminine nothing is inherently wrong with boys liking to play with trucks, and pressuring boys to do more girly things against their inclinations defeats the purpose.Resistarea of research is looking at how easy it is for boys to actively resist masculinity norms and what benefits they may get from this.Recognize that the way that society is right now isnt how it has to be. You could, for instance, tell boys that even though there has never been a woman U.S. president, anyone can be president, regardless of their gender. Highlight women who are leading companies and, possibly more importantly, men who excel in HEED occupations (health care, early education and domestic roles). These wont be easy. It wont be a onetime thing. But the sooner we can start dismantling gender gaps at all levels of society, the sooner well see boys (and girls) less pressured to meet outdated expectationsand more fulfilled in finding authenticity. This is an opinion and analysis article, and the views expressed by the author or authors are not necessarily those of Scientific American.

  • Earth May Soon Get Early Solar Flare Warnings
    www.scientificamerican.com
March 10, 20252 min readEarth May Soon Get Early Solar Flare WarningsFlickering loops in the suns corona may appear before dangerous solar activityBy Chris Simms edited by Sarah Lewin FrasierAnalyzing huge loops in the suns corona (its atmosphere) can predict potentially dangerous solar flares. DETLEV VAN RAVENSWAAY/Science SourceSolar flares are bursts of radiation from the suns surface, sometimes followed by a bubble of magnetized plasma particles called a coronal mass ejection (CME). If they happen to spray out in Earths direction, CMEs can cause geomagnetic storms that damage power systems on the ground or spacecraft in orbit. And solar flare radiation itself can disrupt communication networks and satellite operations.Unfortunately, solar scientists cannot reliably predict when the sun will belch out a flare. After one is observed, every minute counts in the ensuing scramble to adjust power grids or move satellites before they get damaged. Now researchers have used data from NASAs Solar Dynamics Observatory to show that distinctive flickering in the huge loops of roiling plasma that arch up out of the suns atmosphere, called the corona, seems to signal that a large flare could soon occur. This link could help researchers brace for the flare and look out for signs that an incoming CME could hit Earth within a couple of days.On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today.Emily Mason, a heliophysicist at San Diego-based research firm Predictive Science, and her colleagues observed coronal loops in magnetically active regions where 50 strong solar flares occurred. They found that the loops ultraviolet light output varied erratically a few hours before a flare, the team told a recent meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Maryland. It gives us one to two hours warning, with 60 to 80 percent accuracy, that a flare is coming, Mason says.If we want to be able to predict solar storms earlier, then we have to predict when the flare will happen, says Mathew Owens, a space physicist at the University of Reading in England. Small gains there are valuable.Crucially, the researchers used a near-real-time data stream with just an hours lag rather than working with data that have been processed to improve quality, which can take weeks. Mason and her team observed flares on the suns outer edges from our perspective, or limbs, because that is where their light can best be seen from Earth. Flares on the suns eastern limb will head away from Earth as the sun rotates, but those on the western limb may hit the planets atmosphere, Mason says. For now our viewpoint means we cant easily see loops emanating from elsewhere on the sun. But the European Space Agency is planning to launch a spacecraft called Vigil in 2031 that should give us a side-on perspective. Being able to see the sun from more different angles is the single most important thing that we can do to improve our predictions, Mason says. She hopes predicting big flares can help keep astronauts and electrical systems safe.

These Bombas arent very bulky and fit right in inside the sock drawer.Photo: Audrey LeePhoto: Nashia BakerCozy Earth Puffy Sheep SlipperBoth senior commerce editor Nashia Baker and commerce editor Audrey Lee own and love this pair from Cozy Earth, which Lee calls a hug for your feet. Made with ultra-soft sheep fur and lined with shearling, these are about as cloud-like as a pair of slippers can get. Lee says a walk in these makes it feel like youre walking on the softest sheepskin rug.Use code ARCHITECTURALDIGEST for 30% off through March 15!More Slippers We LovePhoto: Julia HarrisonBombas Sunday SlipperThis shearling slip-on has considerable support, and its memory foam and EVA midsole make it suitable for outside, if only briefly. Harrison called them the perfect pair of house slippers for anyone with chronically cold feet. Since they fit on your foot like a proper shoe, they dont glide like some slippers, and you dont have to grip your toes to keep them on your feet. Harrison recommends the cherry chocolate shade for its rich color, which happens to pair nicely with her casual bedroom decor. They look really good askew on my floor, she adds.Photo: Audrey LeeVibae Leather MulesSo we bent the rules a little bit! But thats what happens when you search for the best slippers around. This gorgeous pair of tanned leather mules has a cork insole and a natural rubber sole for a super high-quality step. Theyre about as chic as you can get while still wearing a slip-on, and completely elevate a lounge pant. Lee pairs them with thicker socks and some slouchy jeans for a relaxed vibe. While she admits theyre a splurge if youre just looking for a house shoe, she encourages the purchase if youre looking for something to alternate between an indoor slipper and outdoor wear.Photo: Nashia BakerIfsthetic Pkk Lounge SlippersAesthetes have found their match with this slipper, made from 100% genuine Italian leather and Nigerian Aso oke cloth. The silk weave and striped pattern are sophisticated in a bohemian kind of way. Baker says the Italian leather footbed makes the sole feel extra sturdy. She also notes that this stylish pair of slippers can easily double as a loafer to wear out and about.

Like most cashmere, youre likely going to face some pilling, but its nothing that a sweater shaver or a good sweater brush cant handle. The silhouette?) and how the robes wore over time.We also made sure that we tested a variety of robe stylesfrom the waffle weave Parachute design Arzbaecher tested to Lees silk Lunya numberand asked editors why these particular styles worked for their needs (Is it a particularly good choice for a specific climate? Post-shower? Perfect for lounging on the sofa with a cup of tea and Netflix?).
