  • New Species Of Stingray Discovered Off Central And South American Coasts
    www.forbes.com
Specimens of , new species, caught in artisanal fishing operations in ... [+] Charambira , Colombian Pacific Ocean.courtesy of WCS Colombia, Julian CaicedoThe genus Hypanus consists of ten known species distributed along coastal habitats worldwide. Until recently, only two species known as the longtail stingray (Hypanus longus) and diamond stingray (Hypanus dipterurus)Hypanus rubioi, joins the list! And while one may believe this is a recent discovery, scientists have actually studied this ray for two decades, documenting its distinctive features and confirming its classification through both anatomical and molecular analyses. For years, local fishers in the Pacific waters of Colombia had been catching rays that didnt quite match the known local species, but without formal classification, these specimens remained unidentified. Between 2003 and 2023, researchers examined a total of 90 individuals 47 females, 40 males, and three unsexed specimens collected from artisanal fishing landings along the Colombian Pacific coast. Many of the captured rays had been eviscerated, or had their tails removed for sale, which complicated the ability for researchers to properly ID them. However, a dedicated research cruise in Uramba Baha Mlaga National Natural Park allowed scientists to collect intact specimens and tissue samples for genetic sequencing, ultimately leading to the confirmation of H. rubioi as a new species. The longnose Pacific stingray (thats H. rubiois common name)Hypanus lineage. DNA comparisons using the COI gene a standard genetic marker for species identification revealed significant differences between the longnose Pacific stingrayHypanus guttatus), its closest known relative, ranges from 2.27% to 2.94%, further solidifying its classification as a distinct species. The phylogenetic analysis places the longnose Pacific stingray as a sister species to H. guttatus, meaning they share a common ancestor but have since evolved separately. An Hypanus rubioi, or longnose Pacific stingray, as seen mid-catch.Screengrab from @diegocardenosa's Instagram postUnderstanding where this new stingray lives and how it fits into its environment is just as important as identifying it. Like other Hypanus species, the longnose Pacific stingray is likely a bottom-dwelling ray that prefers sandy or muddy coastal habitats, including bays, estuaries, and seagrass beds. Preliminary ecological niche modeling suggests that its range could extend from central Mexico to northern Peru, influenced by factors such as salinity and light availability. These habitats are critical for the survival of many stingray species, but are increasingly threatened by human activities. Many are caught as bycatch in fisheries, while others are directly targeted for consumption. Habitat degradation, pollution, and climate change also pose risks to these predators. Of the ten recognized Hypanus species, several have been assessed as vulnerable or endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. For example, the IUCN lists sharpsnout stingray (H. geijskesi) and smalltooth stingray (H. rudis) as critically endangered, while the longtail stingray (one of theStingrays are an essential part of ocean ecosystems, often serving as both predators and prey. Accurately identifying species allows scientists to better understand population sizes, habitat preferences, and threats, leading to more effective management strategies. In the case of the longnose Pacific stingray, the lack of clear classification had previously resulted in misidentified catches, making it difficult to assess its status. Now, with its formal recognition, conservationists can begin to properly evaluate its population health and potential vulnerabilities.Continued exploration and research are crucial, not just for expanding our knowledge of marine life but for ensuring that newly discovered species receive the protection they need. The discovery of this new stingray also raises broader questions about biodiversity in the Eastern Tropical Pacific. If a large, distinct stingray species remained undocumented for so long what else might be hiding in these waters?

In a nutshell: The FTC wants a judge to delay the agency's trial against Amazon over allegations it used deceptive marketing practices for its Prime subscription program. The reason for the request is that Elon Musk and the Trump administration's layoffs of federal workers has left the FTC short on employees and funds. The FTC said in its 2023 complaint against Amazon that the company knowingly tricks people into signing up for Prime through the use of "Dark Patterns," a reference to the number of options at the checkout suggesting people sign up for automatically renewing Prime subscriptions. It also alleged that canceling the subscription is a task involving multiple unnecessary steps, which could cause some people to give up before the end.A trial was due to begin in September, but FTC lawyer Jonathan Cohen has asked US District Judge John Chun to postpone it by two months."Our resource constraints are severe and really unique to this moment," Cohen said during a status hearing on Wednesday, via Associated Press. "We have lost employees in the agency, in our division and on the case team."Cohen confirmed to the judge that the FTC's resource challenges stemmed from the recent cuts made to federal government employees.Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has laid off over 62,500 federal workers since its inception. Cohen said some FTC employees had chosen to leave in January after DOGE's "Fork in the Road" email, which offered a deferred resignation program that allowed employees to announce their resignation effective September 30, 2025. In return, participants would retain full pay and benefits until that date. // Related StoriesAdding to the staffing problems has been the government hiring freeze, which Cohen said has prevented the FTC from replacing staff members who resigned for other reasons.Cohen said the FTC doesn't want to push the trial date back by more than a couple of months, but he still couldn't guarantee it would be enough time for the agency to address its issues. He couldn't even guarantee that things won't be worse by November. The FTC's legal team is "racing at considerable cost" to meet a late April deadline for discovery, Cohen said. It is also dealing with restrictive rules on purchasing court documents and travel.Amazon doesn't want the delay. One of its attorneys said most of the FTC's legal team assigned to the case were still employed by the agency, and that the FTC lacks grounds for a delay.Amazon denies it engaged in deceptive practices related to its Prime subscription service. If the FTC wins the suit, Amazon could potentially refund affected Prime customers.

  • Leaked images of an AMD GPU have me wishing it was real
    www.digitaltrends.com
A new leak shows clear images of what couldve been one of AMDs best graphics cards the reference version of the RX 9070 XT. AMD said that it didnt make its own version, also known as Made By AMD (MBA), which is why its such a surprise to see one such card in the flesh. Im not sure if this is a real GPU, but if it is, I know that I wish it made it to market. The leaked photos surfaced on Bilibili earlier this morning. They show what appears to be an RX 9070 XT GPU, in a full-black shroud, in a sealed bag. It sports three fans, but little else can be gathered from these images.Recommended VideosThe card was actually listed for sale in China, and, considering that the listing is gone now, chances are that it was sold at MSRP. The seller offered one-year warranty and promised that the card had no damage. Needless to say, such a sale would not have been legal. The RX 9070 XT GPU, if its real, was likely given out to AMDs brand partners prior to the launch of the RX 9070 XT/non-XT. Whoever got their hands on this card ended up keeping it and selling it, but as this MBA design was never officially released, so it shouldnt be sold.Get your weekly teardown of the tech behind PC gaming A few details are made pretty clear, including the serial code, which will undoubtedly make it simple for AMD to track down the seller but thats assuming the card is even real, which we dont know for a fact. It certainlylooks real, but you never know with these things. These images have me wishing AMD did make its own MBA cards, though. Those cards would sell at the recommended price and wouldnt fall victim to the price hikes that the partner-made RX 9070s are soon said to be suffering from. Some RX 9070 XT GPUs sell for a lot more than the MSRP, and if AMD had its own design out there, itd be a huge win for gamers who dont want to spend more than $600 on a new GPU.Editors Recommendations

  • Watch out for North Korean spyware apps on the Google Play store
    www.digitaltrends.com
Android users should be careful what they download from the Google Play store, as security researchers recently found a selection of apps which contained North Korean spyware hosted there. The five affected apps appeared to be benign system utilities like file managers, but once installed could collect personal information like SMS messages, call logs, and device location. The spyware apps were identified by Lookout Threat Lab, which highlighted the following apps in both English and Korean: (Phone Manager), File Manager, (Smart Manager), (Kakao Security), and Software Update Utility. These apps have since been removed from the Play Store by Google.Recommended VideosThe apps used a new surveillance tool called KoSpy, thought to originate from a North Korean state-sponsored hacking group called ScarCruft or APT37.Please enable Javascript to view this contentKoSpy is a new Android spyware attributed to the North Korean group APT37. It masquerades as utility apps and targets Korean and English speaking users, the security researchers Lookout Threat Lab warned. KoSpy can collect extensive data, such as SMS messages, call logs, location, files, audio, and screenshots via dynamically loaded plugins. The apps that were affected didnt really work as they said they did: some of them did perform some functions with basic interfaces that opened up Android settings view, while others did not function at all and showed only a fake system window. But once installed, the apps could download plugins and collect surveillance information. Some of the information the apps could surveil included data on SMS messages, call logs, device location, local files and folders, recording screenshots and key strokes, and even recording audio or taking photos with the phones cameras. Now that the apps have been removed from the Play Store its not clear how many people may have downloaded them and been affected, but its a good reminder to check the sources and reputation of apps before you download them and give them access to your device.Editors Recommendations

We transitioned virtually the entire Internet from "http" to "https" in the name of security. Clearly, we're not afraid of a challenge. But there's one problem that many companies haven't even tried to solve, and its very name seems to communicate a kind of surrender: unmanaged devices.By "unmanaged devices," we're talking about laptops, tablets, and phones that employees use at work but that aren't covered by a mobile device management (MDM) solution, and so are outside the visibility and control of security or IT, often because the company has no effective way to prevent personal devices from authenticating. These devices might belong to contractors, Linux users, or employees using personal devices under abring-your-own-device (BYOD) policy. A2022 Kolide studyfound that 47% of companies allow unmanaged devices to access company resources. That means nearly half let sensitive data disappear onto devices with no safeguards.Read the Full Article on Dark ReadingAbout the AuthorDark ReadingStaff & ContributorsDark Reading: Connecting The Information Security CommunityLong one of the most widely-read cybersecurity news sites on the Web, Dark Reading is also the most trusted online community for security professionals.
