  • How to establish trade routes in Civilization 7
    www.digitaltrends.com
There are a lot of tips and tricks to learn about managing your growing civ in Civilization 7, but a key mechanic for long-term success is forming trade routes with the other Leaders. Even if you're aiming to dominate the world with a military victory, you will want to leverage the resources of other civs before you eventually go to war with them. Trade routes between cities have been in the series for years now, but they look a bit different in this version since it no longer hinges on diplomacy like before. There's no need to spend your Influence on us since we're more than happy to trade all the information you need about how to set up trade routes for free.Recommended VideosDifficultyModerateDuration1 hour 40 minutes2K GamesTrade routes can be formed between your cities and towns and any other Leader's properties. Doing so will allow you to gain access to all of the natural resources that specific location currently holds. This can give you access to a ton of buffs that might otherwise be inaccessible, but you do need to do a little work to set it up.Step 1: Start a game and find at least one other civ on the map.Step 2: While you're doing step 1, make sure you check the Civic Tree and work towards researching the Code of Laws.RelatedStep 3: Once you have finished researching the Code of Laws, you can build or buy a Merchant unit.Step 4: Select your Merchant and it will show you all the trade routes, both possible and not possible, as well as all the potential resources you will get in each.Trade routes may not be possible if your Merchant cannot physically reach that location or you have a bad relationship with that Leader.Step 5: Select one that is possible and the map will take you to that location.Step 6: Have your Merchant unit travel to that town.Step 7: Wait as many turns as it takes for them to navigate there.Step 8: Once the Merchant arrives, click the icon of two arrows pointing in either direction to establish a trade route. This will "consume" your Merchant.Editors Recommendations

  • Fireflys Blue Ghost moon mission shares its most stunning image yet
    www.digitaltrends.com
As the Firefly Aerospace mission known as Blue Ghost makes it way to the moon, it is snapping some gorgeous images as it goes including striking images of Earth in its rearview mirror. Now, the company has released the most stunning image so far, showing the planet Earth and its reflection bouncing off the smooth surface of a solar panel on the spacecraft.Fireflys Blue Ghost lander captures image of Earth reflecting off the solar panel with the Moon on the horizon above Earth. Fireflys X-band antenna and NASAs LEXI payload are also shown on the top deck of the lander. Firefly AerospaceBlue Ghost was launched last month, and has been orbiting around Earth to adjust its trajectory before heading off toward the moon. This week, the spacecraft performed a maneuver called Trans Lunar Injection, in which it fires its engines to start heading away from Earth and toward the moon.Recommended VideosIt will take several days for the spacecraft to arrive at the moon, at which point it will fire its engines again to enter into a lunar orbit. From there, it will adjust its orbit over several weeks before coming in to land on the moons surface. The company is hoping to be just the second ever commercial entity to successfully perform a soft landing on the moon.Shortly after Trans Lunar Injection, Fireflys Blue Ghost lunar lander captured image of Earth with the Moon below in the distance. Firefly AerospaceAs well as the image showing our planet reflected in the spacecrafts solar panel, it also snapped this image of Earth as it recedes from view. With the journey to the moon well underway, the spacecraft is also sending back data from its various payloads, which include a variety of NASA experiments and technology tests. Please enable Javascript to view this contentNow four weeks into the mission, Blue Ghost has downlinked more than 15 GB of data, including NASA science data, from record-breaking GNSS signals to magnetic field measurements, that is already unlocking insights for the future of space exploration, Firefly Aerospace wrote in an update. The payloads carried on the spacecraft include an experimental method for collecting samples of the dusty material covering the surface of the moon, called regolith, by firing a jet of gas as the surface and collecting and photographing this material. There is also an experiment into using electrical fields to prevent dust from building up on surfaces, which can be a major problem for moon missions as the lack of atmosphere on the moon means that the dust there is very sharp and abrasive, and can quickly eat through materials like seals. The aim is to test out technologies which can be used for human exploration of the moon under NASAs Artemis program.Editors Recommendations

  • A native Android Apple TV app is now in the Google Play store
    www.digitaltrends.com
Its been five years since the Apple TV app was launched, and were now getting a version for Android devices built from the ground up for native Android integration in the Google Play store that will have the same Apple TV+ functionality as the Apple ecosystem version. The new app means users with Android OS 10 or later will finally have the ability to sign up for Apple TV+ on their Android-based phones and tablets to watch shows and movies like Severance, Silo, Killers of the Flower Moon, and CODA. There will be no difference in pricing on Android compared to Apple. This should enable seamless interactivity across platforms for features such as Continue Watching which keeps track of where you are in a show or movie and allows you to pick up from that spot when you return, regardless of the device you watch on. Customers Watchlist will be kept up to date across devices as well, and since purchases are linked to your Apple account, all the content you own will be accessible on any device with the new updated app. One thing missing at launch, though, will be the ability to cast Apple TV content from your Android device.AppleThe demo Digital Trends saw was on both an Android phone and tablet, and looked incredibly similar to the experience on an Apple device. On phones, along the bottom of the screen will be dedicated tabs for Apple TV+, MLS, Downloads, and Search, and scrolling through the app will reveal Continue Watching, Top Charting shows and movies, and for new Android subscribers a section highlighting the top Apple original productions. With tablets, the sizing will adjust based on the screen size, and the same menus found on the phone layout will be accessible through a hamburger menu at the top left of the screen.Recommended VideosAlso featured within the new app is MLS Season Pass. There will be a highlighted match of the week under the banner Sunday Night Soccer and pages for each upcoming match that will include details and links out to the soccer club pages. Youll have the ability to favorite teams to prioritize them and have them show in a separate Supporters Section row. Please enable Javascript to view this contentThe app version that already exists on Google OS TVs such as the TCL QM8, Sony Bravia 9, and Hisense U8N will get integrated Google Play billing, but at least as of now, will not be a new app.Based on user ratings and comments in the Google Play store as of just this morning, this will be a very welcome addition. The previous app listed had more than 50 million downloads but a rating of only 1.6 stars (and we werent able to download it on our devices).Editors Recommendations

  • Apple launches ambitious health study to advance wellness tech
    www.digitaltrends.com
Apple recently launched its first pair of wireless earbuds with an integrated heart rate sensor. Down the road, this convenience will reportedly arrive on the AirPods family, as well. The uber popular earbuds have already landed their hearing aid clearance, alongside a slew of new wellness-centric features. The focus is clear. Health-tech is the next great avenue for innovation at Apple.Recommended VideosTo that end, the company has just announced the Apple Health Study, which aims to collect biomarker information and user inputs to connect the dots between sensor data and the current health status. Onboarding will happen via Apples Research app and the focus will be on US citizens who meet the age criteria. Please enable Javascript to view this contentApple will be working with Brigham and Womens Hospital to understand how data collected by wearable devices can be used to predict, monitor, manage, and assess a persons physical and mental well-being.Theres plenty of precedent for such work. Researchers at the University of Barcelona recently showcased how smartwatch data can be used to predict psychiatric illnesses and trace them down to genetic roots. Experts at Tampere University have developed a framework that can analyze the ECG readings from a smartwatch and detect signs of congestive heart failure with roughly 90% accuracy.AppleMultiple doctors, including experts from the American Heart Association, recently told Digital Trends that smartwatches can play a complementary role in helping keep track of healthy habits such as physical activity, heart rate during activity, and sleep habits in several ways.Apples health study simply builds atop an unprecedented strength of its ecosystem. There are millions of users out there who rely on Apple devices, such as the Apple Watch and iPhones, for keeping track of their heart activity, sleep patterns, and workouts. That massive pool of participants and data is a goldmine for more research, allowing scientists to develop new algorithms and frameworks to get the best out of biomarker data collected by wearable devices.AppleApple says the study will broadly focus on activity, aging, cardiovascular health, circulatory health, cognition, hearing, menstrual health, mental health, metabolic health, mobility, neurologic health, respiratory health, sleep, and more.It is, owing to such studies, that the company was able to develop features such as Walking Steadiness on iPhones and the Vitals app for its smartwatch. The company says its new study will try to understand how body signals, both physical and emotional, are tied to the overall health of a person.Of course, this is scientific research we are talking about, so its going to take a few years before the data collected as part of the health study will produce any remarkable findings, or new capabilities. Furthermore, validation and approval by regulatory authorities, both local and overseas, is a long drawn-out process.Apples focus on tech-driven health and wellness is not odd. Back in 2019, CEO Tim Cook told CNBC that health would be Apples greatest contribution. In the years that have elapsed since, Apple has made some remarkable advancements, even though the competition has also matured a lot.Editors Recommendations

  • Trump Administration wants the US to produce the most powerful AI chips
    www.digitaltrends.com
LiveNOW from FOXJD Vance took to the stage at the Paris AI Action Summit on Wednesday declaring that, the United States of America is the leader in AI and our administration plans to keep it that way.The US possesses all components across the full AI stack, including advanced semiconductor design, frontier algorithms, and, of course, transformational applications, Vance said. Now the computing power this stack requires is integral to advancing AI technology, and to safeguard Americas advantage, the Trump administration will ensure the most powerful AI systems are built in the U.S. with American-designed and manufactured chips.Vance also criticized the European Unions existing AI and tech regulations, especially the Digital Services Act and GDPR, as onerous international rules that smother smaller companies in legal costs and stifle free speech because they prevent adults from accessing an opinion that the government thinks is misinformation. He went on to note that the U.S. legislature is already working to remove its regulations for the industry and invited other countries to follow Americas lead on the matter.Recommended VideosThe Trump administration is troubled by reports that some foreign governments are considering tightening the screws on U.S. tech companies with international footprints, Vance said. Now America cannot and will not accept that. He also discussed the technologys power demands, arguing that these evolving AI systems need reliable electricity supplies and access to high-quality semiconductors, but lamented that many countries are instead choosing to eliminate stable sources of power from their national grids. Ironically, Vance also warned against nations cozying up to authoritarian regimes, claiming that partnerships with such nations would not be profitable in the long-term.Some of us in this room have learned from experience, partnering with them means chaining your nation to an authoritarian master that seeks to infiltrate, dig in, and seize your information infrastructure, VP JD Vance said. Should a deal seem too good to be true, just remember the old adage that we learned in Silicon Valley, If you arent paying for the product, you are the product.Editors Recommendations

  • This tech can end QR code scams, if only Google and Apple pitch in
    www.digitaltrends.com
Table of ContentsTable of ContentsWhat is the solution?Whats the technology pipeline? Why does this approach matter? The most successful digital scam is one that is tied to convenience. QR codes, which are used for everything from sharing contacts to making payments, are an ideal vector. In India, which runs the worlds largest digital payment system, QR code scams have become a regular nuisance.I regularly hear from retail shop owners and cab drivers about how they were duped using a fake QR code or app, and similar is the tale of online shoppers. Parking lot QR scams are also rampant in the US and UK, but stealing a few dollars is not the only risk.Recommended VideosIts the theft of sensitive data, including financial details, that has even put banking giants on alert. If you scanned the QR code and entered your credentials, like your username and password, into a website, change your password right away, the US Federal Trade Commission said in an alert note barely a couple of weeks ago. The Swiss national security agency has also issued a warning about bad actors sending physical QR codes via mail to the doorsteps to steal passwords, a heist that is commonly known as quishing, short for QR phishing. Of course, we cant nuke the QR tech stack over such risks, except for raising awareness, but we finally might have a solution from the experts at the University of Rochester.Instead of blocky dots, SDMQR codes use ellipses. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital TrendsThe technology in question is a self-authenticating dual-modulated QR (SDMQR) code. It stops the potential for scams before users are even taken to a fake website or fraudulent web repository, by flagging the risk as soon as the code is scanned. But before we get into the technical details, let me break down the biggest advantages of this secure path to QR code technology:It is self-authenticating, which means the QR code already has the verified digital signature of the entity behind it, which is verified every time you scan it on your phone.Aside from taking users to websites, they can also be used for payments and encoding secure information, among other related scenarios. The QR code verification happens on-device. You dont need an internet connection to check if its legitimate or fraudulent. It does not require any specialized app or software update for existing QR code scanning apps. The system does not create any unwanted operational delay or latency. These secure QR codes can be customized to fit the design requirements, without hampering their safeguards. It doesnt need a high-resolution smartphone camera to work. The one in your pocket will do just fine at scanning SDMQR codes. These QR codes can also have colors, so brands can get them customized for better identity recognition.Existing machines that read QR codes can also read SDMQR codes, with a warning system in tow.The best part about this approach is that an average user wont have to go through any technical hoops to protect their interest. For companies that rely on QR codes and want to protect their business, they simply have to register their official websites URL and embed their signature in the code.SDQMR codes look different than traditional QR codes. Instead of the mainstream pixel-style block imprint, they make use of ellipses. The team behind the tech stack has filed a patent and has already secured a National Science Foundation I-Corps grant to explore the replacement of traditional bar codes with SDMQR codes.Going a step further, the team is also exploring whether using colors can make these codes more versatile. With versatility, they mean using the same QR code to guide users in up to three different directions, or web destinations.University of Rochester / IEEE Security & PrivacySDMQR codes offer proactive front-end protection against quishing before the link is even accessed, says the research paper published in the IEEE Security & Privacy Journal. As mentioned above, we are simply talking about a retrofit, and not a framework that would turn the whole QR ecosystem upside down. The whole process relies on two components. A primary message (such as the URL of a business) and a corresponding cryptographic signature of that message. This cryptographic signature is generated and owned by a business in possession of a digital private key. A DMQR encoder embeds the primary and secondary messages into the SDMQR code.If you look at the code, you will notice elliptical patterns in black and white. As per the researchers, the variation patterns hide the primary message, while the orientation data carries the secondary message.Flagging a risky QR code destination. University of Rochester / IEEE Security & PrivacyOnce the code is scanned on a phone, a DMQR decoder breaks down the primary and secondary messages for verification. At this stage, the public key of the business (which created the code) performs algorithmic verification to check whether the cryptographic secondary message matches the contents of the unencrypted primary message.Think of it as a two-stage secret handshake between spy agents. The biggest challenge is not the tech stack, but creating a centralized system where all businesses can come together and perform the necessary registration to create unique SDMQR codes. The idea is to create a public key for these legitimate entities, which is also the only thing an SDMQR code reader requires. This is where makers of smartphone operating systems aka Google and Apple can help create a safer future. Their participation as central signatories would mean a smartphone or tablet would only require their two public keys for quickly authenticating SDMQR codes.Approving a legitimate URL after an SDMQR code scan. University of Rochester / IEEE Security & PrivacySince they offer built-in QR code scanning frameworks for iOS and Android, using them as central signatories is the best way forward. On a technical level, their participation would dramatically ease the verification process as SDMQR code readers would only need to store just two public keys and get the job done.Theres definitely some precedent for that. Google lets businesses sign up to get a verified badge and icon in Gmail, so that users dont fall for spoof emails trying to pass off as a legitimate message.A healthy few technical proposals have appeared in the past few years to fix the problem of QR code scams, but they all arrived with their fair share of limitations. The SDMQR system solves a few key fundamental hurdles to ease the adoption without any technical hassles. It takes a transparent approach to self-authentication and doesnt require any software update to the QR code reader apps installed on a persons phone. They will work just fine with regular QR and the more secure SDMQR codes.Otherwise, tasking developers or OS-makers to deploy an ecosystem-wide synchronized update would not only be a massive challenge, but also take its own sweet time. Further enhancing the convenience for adopters is the single central signatory system, which requires only one key for verification. And the best part is that smartphone users wont even require an internet connection for the verification protocols to jump into action.SDMQR codes will work just fine with a dash of stylistic personalization. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital TrendsPrevious efforts to build secure QR code systems put their faith in cryptographic keys for QR code generators in order to authenticate the identity. A few other ideas involved individual public-private key pairs, which means a users mobile device was expected to carry (or have locally saved) the public keys for all the parties that signed up for creating secure codes for authentication and identity verification.Using our proposed protocol, mobile devices can determine whether the information is deemed authentic by the signatory, immediately on the mobile device itself, says the team in the research paper.Another advantage is that the inherent dual-modulating tech can also be applied to bar codes, which means even codes that are used for airline boarding passes and courier pcackage can take advantage of the framework. The biggest beneficiary of SDMQR codes would be banking institutions. Researchers argue that their deployment in parking payment systems can reliably protect users from being targeted by QR-based phishing attacks as well as financial losses. The latter aspect also applies to all scenarios where people often run into QR codes plastered in public places. That includes Wi-Fi access, opening a restaurants menu, and relaying a business location, among others. Wi-Fi jacking is a well-known threat that quickly spirals into utter chaos for an average user, so any solution to plug that vulnerability should find mass adoption. The ball is now in Google and Apples backyard. They already provide the OS-level software sauce for decoding QR and bar codes. All they need to do is vet and implement support for the new SDMQR framework, and guard the interests of smartphone users across the world.Editors RecommendationsThe M1 has a major security loophole that Apple cant patch

  • Galaxy A56 leak reveals official colors of Samsungs chief mid-ranger
    www.digitaltrends.com
The Samsung Galaxy A55 is a solid phone for your everyday needs, and the upcoming Galaxy A56 is expected to take the experience a notch higher with slight improvements without a significant price hike. Ahead of its launch, a series of leaked images reveal the official design and colors of the Galaxy A56.A fresh new leak of the Samsung Galaxy A56 comes from notable leaker Evan Blass, showing the mid-ranger in four (likely) official colors. The set of images leaked by Blass includes light and dark gray, a subtle dark green or moss colorway with a chalk-like finish, and a light pink that we have previously seen on the Galaxy S23 as well as the S24 FE. The back is expected to be made of glass instead of plastic.Recommended VideosAlthough the design remains largely unchanged from the previous generation, the rear camera now houses three lenses in a single array, which is black across all color variants. This differs from the Galaxy A55 which uses three distinct rings to separate the cameras, and we could even see other A series phones adopt a similar change in 2025.Evan BlassThe frame, seemingly metal from its looks, also appears flatter than the previous generation. The Galaxy A55 preserves the raised section for the volume and power buttons, which officially called the Key Island. The frame also gets a brushed metal finish, with a previous leak hinting at the use of aluminum. Please enable Javascript to view this contentThe lack of a side-mounted fingerprint scanner also suggests an optical fingerprint reader sits in the AMOLED display.Talking of which, we see sizable bezels around the display, and this could help buyers differentiate the Galaxy A56 from more premium phones.Other specifications of the Galaxy A56 have yet to be confirmed, but it tentatively sports an Exynos 1580 chipset. The three cameras on the back will likely include a 50MP primary, a 12MP ultrawide, and a 5MP macro, which makes up for the same setup as the previous generation. The front camera is said to be downgraded to 12MP.The Galaxy A56 is also the first mid-ranger from Samsung to get faster charging at 45W, up from 25W previously. The battery, however, is expected to be the same 5,000mAh pack as last year. Additionally, the phone is expected to release with One UI 7 based on Android 15 right out of the box. Even though Samsung hasnt given any clear indications about its launch, we can expect it to be among the first A series the company launches this year.As with previous Galaxy A5X phones, this one might not launch in the U.S. But in the UK, the Galaxy A56 is rumored to price around 440 British pounds, which translates to roughly $550 a reasonable price for a well-equipped mid-ranger like this.Editors Recommendations

SpaceX has achieved the spectacular feat twice so far, on the fifth and seventh flights. The seventh and most recent test flight of SpaceXs Starship took place on January 16, 2025. Like all of the Starship flights since the first one in April 2022, the rocket launched from Starbase in southeast Texas, close to the border with Mexico.Several reports have suggested that the eighth test flight of Starship will get underway no earlier than February 24, and the recent engine test certainly suggests that the mission could take place before the end of this month. The current plan is to use the Starship for crew and cargo missions to the moon, Mars, and beyond. In the short-term, NASA wants to use a modified version of the Starship for its next crewed moon landing, which is currently scheduled for 2027 as part of the highly anticipated Artemis III mission. But there is still much testing to be carried out, so the date could slip.Editors Recommendations

  • Thomson Reuters lands copyright win against AI company. Whats next?
    www.digitaltrends.com
The first landmark win in an AI copyright case is here. A Delaware court has ruled that a tech startup used copyright-protected material to build a competing AI-based legal product, which is against the law, handing over a remarkable win to Thomson Reuters. This is the first major victory for a plaintiff fighting against an AI company over what constitutes fair use of material owned by another entity. The parent company of the Reuters news agency has been tangled in a lengthy legal case against Ross Intelligence, an AI company that lifted material from Thomson Reuterss Westlaw platform.Recommended VideosThe plaintiff argued in court that Ross Intelligences usage of material pulled from its database to train an AI-powered legal research tool was not fair use, and that it infringed on copyright-protected material.Nadeem Sarwar / Digital TrendsIn their ruling, U.S. Circuit Judge Stephanos Bibas rejected Ross claims that its conduct was innocent infringement, granting a summary judgment in favor of Thomson Reuters. At the center of the case is the concept of fair use, which is broadly dependent on four factors: (1) The purpose and character of using copyright material, including whether it is commercial or nonprofit(2) The nature of the copyrighted work that was used(3) How much of the work was used and how substantial a part it was relative to the copyrighted works whole(4) How does the usage affect the copyrighted works value or potential market positionThe district courts decision was a 2-2 split between Ross Intelligence and Thomson Reuters, but Judge Bibas ruled that the fourth factor outweighs the rest. The latest court ruling could set the ball rolling for more decisive action in other cases where AI companies have been dragged to court for unfairly using copyright-protected content.Joe Maring / Digital TrendsOne of the biggest such cases involved The New York Times mounting a legal challenge against OpenAI and its backer Microsoft for using the news outlets content without proper authorization to train its AI products such as ChatGPT. Gettys lawsuits against Stability AI are another example where the scraping of content without due licensing or compensation was challenged.Amazon-backed Anthropic also found itself tangled in a copyright battle against the Universal Music Group. Recently, we have seen a new trend where two supposedly warring sides strike a licensing deal to quell the copyright disputes. OpenAI has struck licensing deals with Axios, Hearst, and CondeNast, among others. Perplexity, stung by its own long list of copyright lawsuits, has inked similar partnerships with Fortune and Times, to name a few.Meta, Google, and Microsoft have also signed similar deals with content partners. Even the Reuters news agency has entered into a licensing partnership with Meta. But striking licensing deals is merely a stop-gap solution.Experts are still divided and seek further clarity on what constitutes copyright law in the age of AI. For example, if an AI model is regurgitating a paraphrased version of someones copyright-protected material, what degree of similarity between the two would trigger a copyright infringement lawsuit? Well find out soon.Editors Recommendations

  • This breakthrough holographic display could make AR glasses a reality in 2026
    www.digitaltrends.com
Table of ContentsTable of ContentsSwaves HXR displayWhats a holographic display?Swave HXR in AR glassesSwave HXR in 2026?Alternatives for 2025Consumer AR glasses could soon become a reality thanks to a breakthrough holographic chip from Swave. Lightweight, low-power, affordable AR glasses have thus far been a distant dream. The best smart glasses can display massive virtual screens but require a phone or other device for video and power. The buzz around AR glasses has been growing, spurred by an impressive Meta Orion prototype demonstration and the powerful new Snap Spectacles update. However, were still waiting for comfortable, affordable glasses that display bright, crisp images over a wide field of view.Recommended VideosSwaves laser-powered holographic display engine is compact and lightweight SwaveSwaves holographic extended reality (HXR) display should be lighter and more compact than the birdbath optics used in leading smart glasses, yet it could significantly boost resolution and brightness. The latest smart glasses with heads-up displays (HUDs) use waveguides, which limit the field of view (FoV) and often lack color. With a densely packed holographic display powered by lasers, Swaves full-color HXR will provide up to 64 gigapixels of resolution with minimal light loss. Using phase-change technology similar to rewritable DVDs, its a low-cost solution with pixels that are 170 times smaller than standard displays, tiny enough to diffract light. While this holographic display technology is ideal for AR glasses, it can be scaled to fill the windshield of a car for visible navigation cues, similar to BMWs Panoramic iDrive display shown at CES 2025. Swave is exploring automotive screens and larger, wall-sized volumetric displays for enterprise use.Swave holographic display technology could solve many XR glasses challenges. SwaveYouve seen holograms before as the rainbow shimmer of a security symbol on a credit card or an eye-catching image that seems to pop off the surface of a card when the light hits just right. Holograms capture a three-dimensional snapshot of an object or scene for later viewing from different angles. The process is complex and quite technical. In short, precisely arranged lasers reflect off objects to encode interference patterns on a recording medium. When light hits the finished hologram, nanometer-scale variations in these patterns diffract light to decode and reconstruct the 3D image.Using holographic techniques in technology requires a display that can encode microscopic interference patterns. Ideally, it should be easy to update the pattern to quickly change whats shown without drawing too much power. Swaves breakthrough meets these demands with a low-cost solution.Swaves AR glasses concept is slim and looks like regular prescription lenses or sunglasses. SwaveSwaves holographic technology could make AR glasses as affordable as todays smart glasses, while reducing the weight, increasing brightness and resolution, extending battery life, working with prescription lenses, and solving the vergence accommodation conflict (VAC) that makes near-eye displays uncomfortable for some people.Swave CEO Mike Noonen told me the bill of materials (BOM) is just $50 per eye and the expected weight of AR glasses using HXR technology could be less than 50 grams. The FoV and apparent resolution are tunable with a view as wide as 120 degrees and a retina-like resolution of up to 60 pixels per degree (PPD). Battery life is estimated at more than 10 hours, making these suitable for daily wear. A display intensity of over 2,000 nits makes virtual images visible outdoors. If Swave can deliver on these promises, next-generation AR glasses could eclipse everything else on the market. For comparison, Xreal One smart glasses boast an FoV of 50 degrees, a resolution of 38 PPD, and brightness of 600 nits in an 84-gram product. Theyre comfortable and deliver performance and quality good enough that I use Xreal One as an ultrawide monitor replacement.Swave also developed a real-time holographic processing unit (HPU) to handle the calculations required to convert an 3D or 2D image into subpixels that form interference patterns. When a low-power laser illuminates the HXR display a holographic image appears.Since the HXR is a phase-change system, it takes no power to retain an image, providing a way to maximize efficiency by slowing the refresh rate in HUD mode. For AR use and immersive experiences, pixels can be updated in 300 ns.So far, Swave has been quietly working in their labs and demonstrating only conceptual designs at trade shows. Were eager to see the first prototype of Swave-powered AR glasses, which should be available within a few months. If this holographic display technology is as good as Swave claims, it could greatly accelerate the availability of full-featured AR glasses. Swaves Mike Noonen estimates HXR and HPU technology could become available to consumers as early as 2026. Swave wont be launching consumer products itself so the timing depends on manufacturing partners.Xreal One enhances the Beam Pro experience with bigger brighter virtual screens. Photo by Tracey Truly / Digital TrendsIf youre intrigued but dont want to wait until 2025, there are plenty of great solutions you can buy and start using immediately. I recently reviewed several Meta Orion alternatives that give your phone a HUD in glasses form. Notifications, turn-by-turn directions, live captions, translations, and AI assistance work hands-free.If you want to watch videos or play games on a virtual cinematic screen with a pocket-sized device, the best smart glasses with displays make that possible. Audio smart glasses double as open-ear earbuds and voice-enabled AI assistants. Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses combine AI smart glasses with a camera that can record high-quality first-person videos and take hands-free photos. You can even connect Xreal One and Viture One smart glasses to your computer to enjoy an ultrawide screen without the bulk and expense of a big monitor. Thats great for laptops that have small screens that rest far below eye level. The current selection of smart glasses have relatively small FoVs so youll see the edge if you use software that simulates ultrawide screens or multiple windows. If youre looking for a more immersive experience, check out the best VR headsets that can transport you to other worldsor place virtual objects anywhere in your space with mixed reality.Stay tuned for more coverage of Swave and other exciting AR and VR news. 2025 is shaping up to be a huge year for XR technology.Editors Recommendations

One of the ideal services that includes college basketball coverage is Sling TV. With Sling TV, users can watch sports, news, and live television for a fraction of the cost of cable.Sling TV offers two plans: Orange at $46 per month and Blue at $51 per month. Sling is offering a 50% discount for the first month. The difference in price affects the number of channels, as Orange features 35 while Blue has 46. Orange features ESPN, a staple in every sports fans household. However, Orange does not include local broadcasts to ABC, Fox, and NBC. The best Sling option is probably to combine Orange and Blue for $66 per month. Consumers can also purchase Sports Extra, which adds popular channels like Big Ten Network, NBA TV, and NFL RedZone.Editors Recommendations

  • You can preorder a GeForce RTX 50 series laptop on February 25
    www.digitaltrends.com
Nvidia revealed the next generation of gaming laptops powered by RTX 50 series GPUs at CES this year, and now we have a date. On February 25, manufacturers will open up preorders for laptops powered by RTX 5070, RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5080, and RTX 5090 GPUs.GeForce RTX 50 Series Laptop pre-orders start Feb 25 from OEMs. Stay tuned for more details! pic.twitter.com/P3frtYPmSy NVIDIA GeForce (@NVIDIAGeForce) February 11, 2025According to CEO Jensen Huang, the RTX 5070 will deliver RTX 4090-level performance in a $1,299 laptop. In other words, hes promising that your new laptop GPU will run games as well as a flagship desktop GPU from just two years ago and its AI that makes this possible.Recommended VideosNvidia has been improving its Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) tech for years now, and it seems like the company is planning to do crazy things with it for these gaming laptops. With DLSS 4 and fifth-gen Tensor cores to power it, Huang promises boosts in both quality and efficiency. The GPU in your laptop will render and ray trace a much lower resolution version of a game, resulting in higher FPS, lower latency, and all-around better performance and then the neural model will generate the remaining pixels needed to achieve your desired resolution.Get your weekly teardown of the tech behind PC gaming The crazy part is that judging by Huangs claims, it seems that Nvidia has refined the tech enough now that it can achieve high-quality results even when upscaling from a very low resolution however low is needed to hit RTX 4090 levels of performance on a laptop. If that sounds utterly insane to you, youre not alone I cant wait to see if this really works as advertised. As for the more expensive GPU models in the lineup, Im not even sure what to expect from a $2,899 laptop with 1,850 AI TOPS. It will be super interesting to compare the performance of the RTX 5070 to the RTX 5090 and see just how much of a difference that extra AI power can make.In terms of specific models, plenty of manufacturers showed off their RTX 50 series gaming laptops at CES, including MSI, Acer, Alienware, Asus, Lenovo, and Razer.Editors Recommendations

  • How Influence works in Civilization 7
    www.digitaltrends.com
One of the foundations of the Civilization franchise has always been learning the tips and tricks for how to engage with the other Leaders. Whether they are players or NPCs, relations between the other major players are unavoidable. You still have the choice to be friendly or hostile, but Civilization 7 introduces a new system that adds even more strategies and options to how you interact called Influence. There are a lot of similarities to Influence as other resources you need to manage, such as Gold and Food, but what you need and use it for is vastly different. Well help you be the best leader you can be by explaining everything you need to know about Influence in Civilization 7.2K GamesInfluence is a new form of currency you can accumulate in Civilization 7 each turn based on what structures you build, social policies you research, Wonders you make, and more. Anything you see the Influence icon for, which looks like a circle with a grid, will impact your Influence. But, there are ways to lose Influence besides spending it as well. If you do things like surprise attack another civ or razing settlements will cost you Influence. You can see how much Influence you are earning per tern on the top of the screen next to your gold total and income.Recommended VideosAs you build Influence, you will need to decide how you want to spend it. Your first opportunities will be when you first meet a new civ and are given the option to give them a friendly, neutral, or hostile greeting. Either of the extremes will cost 20 Influence and impact your relationship with them right off the bat.2K GamesAfter you meet a civ, you can use your Influence in many ways to benefit both parties or negatively impact them. These include Treaties, Endeavors, Sanctions, Treaties, and Espionage. Each one will last a set number of turns and give a chance to improve (or reduce) your relationship with that Leader plus another temporary bonus. For example, improving trade relations can give one or both Leaders bonus gold for a number of turns. The specific outcome is dependent on whether or not the other Leader supports your proposal, which grants you both the bonus, accepts it, which will only benefit one, or reject it and the proposal doesnt happen.RelatedBesides selecting a Leader and choosing to spend Influence on these actions, other Leaders can come to you with the same proposals. When this happens, you have the same three options of support, accept, and reject, but support and reject will cost you a small amount of Influence too.Another use for Influence relates to Independant Powers, which are the new name for the smaller NPC settlements on the map. By default, they are neutral towards you but you can use your Influence to befriend and even incorporate them into your civ. Once you make contact with one (so long as they are not hostile) you can use your influence to begin befriending them. With enough influence, you can become their suzerain and incorporate them as a new town for your civ.Editors Recommendations

  • This popular robot vacuum now comes bundled with a cordless vacuum for better cleaning
    www.digitaltrends.com
SwitchBotSwitchBot, a company responsible for a variety of smart home gadgets, launched the K10+ Pro robot vacuum last August. Offering solid performance, a reasonable price tag, and a tiny footprint that reaches areas missed by larger competitors, it quickly became an easy recommendation for budget shoppers. Fast forward to today, and SwitchBot is now offering the K10+ Pro Combo a 3-in-1 vacuuming solution that pairs the robot with a cordless vacuum and auto-emptying base station.Robot vacuums are an excellent addition to most smart homes, but theyre still not a full replacement for traditional vacuums. For example, they cant yet clean stairs, and sensitive areas of your home are often easier to clean yourself (such as around expensive home dcor or underneath desks littered with cables). Thats where the SwitchBot K10+ Pro Combo comes into play, as you can clean these areas with the cordless vacuum while the K10+ Pro handles the rest of your home.Recommended VideosThe robot vacuum in the bundle is essentially the same one launched last year, offering just 2,500Pa of suction but a tiny footprint thats great at maneuvering around tight obstacles. Its the cordless vacuum thats the new addition here, and with 20,000Pa of suction and a five-level filtration system, its an excellent companion for all your manual cleaning needs.SwitchBotBest of all, the docking station now empties the dustbags from both the robot vacuum and cordless vacuum, ensuring your hands stay clean after each use. The overall footprint of the dock is quite small too, taking up about as much space as a standard piece of paper. So if youre living in a cramped apartment or home, its a better choice than some of the massive robot vacuums on the market. Please enable Javascript to view this contentAccording to SwitchBot, the docking station can hold up to 70 days of accumulated debris. This will likely vary based on the size of your home and how often you run the robot and cordless vacuum. Other notable features include Matter compatibility, support for voice commands, and a mobile app for additional customization options. The SwitchBot K10+ Pro Combo is now available for $800, though a $200 off coupon is available to early shoppers. Youll also find the standalone K10+ Pro robot vacuum for $600. Be sure to also check out the Ecovacs Deebot T30S Combo and Ecovacs Deebot X2 Combo, as they offer much of the same functionality but with a robot vacuum that produces more suction.Editors Recommendations

  • You can now ignore certain people on Discord to protect your peace
    www.digitaltrends.com
Have you ever needed to block someone on a social media or online chat platform without dealing with the drama that comes after that? Discord is rolling out the Ignore button to give users the ability to give themselves space from certain people without the other person knowing. The online gaming chat platform announced in a blog on Monday ahead of Safer Internet Day that it created the Ignore button to help users manage their interactions with their friends and peers more effectively, as well as keeping themselves safe from people who dont have the best of intentions. Discord said the new feature was made especially for teenagers who are more prone to confrontations with the person they blocked in the real world after the fact.Recommended VideosCurrently, you can block a user to prevent interactions with them, but weve heard from our users that this can sometimes feel confrontational and scary, Discord said in the blog post. This is particularly the case for teen users who often want to take space without the person knowing we built this tool for you!Whether youre a teen or adult Discord user and you want to ignore the person whos giving you a hard time in any way, go to your DMs with the user you were intending to block in the first place, click on their profile picture, tap the dropdown menu on the upper right corner of the screen and tap Ignore. Then youll see a pop-up message that reads, Ignore [username]? Get space without letting them know. Once youve made up your mind, tap the Ignore button on the bottom of the screen, and all new messages, DMs, and other notifications from that person are hidden from your view for the foreseeable future. Please enable Javascript to view this contentThe Ignore button not only helps people of any age protect themselves from the toxic people in their lives on top of managing their interactions with other people in general so that they can focus on their tasks within Discord and outside of it, but it also protects them from scammers, which happens to be the theme for Safer Internet Day this year. However, if ignoring the abusive Discord user isnt right for you, you can still report them and theyll receive disciplinary action from Discord support.Editors Recommendations

  • South of Midnight knows exactly what it wants to be and is better for it
    www.digitaltrends.com
Table of ContentsTable of ContentsReverse engineeringWeaving into battleDeconstructing Southern gothicIf all goes according to plan, Xbox has a big 2025 ahead of it. Obsidian will kick things off with Avowed next week, Doom: The Dark Ages is bound to be a hit, and Ninja Gaiden 4 will give a classic series the revival it deserves. All of that is happening in just the first few months of the year, with heavy hitters like Fableand Gear of War E-Daystill to come. The most exciting game in Xboxs lineup might be its smallest, though: South of Midnight. The latest game from We Happy Few studio Compulsion Games left a big impression during last months Xbox Developer Direct. The action-adventure game takes players to the American deep south, which is brought to life with a striking art style inspired by stop-motion animation. Thats the kind of detail thats bound to catch eyes, but it left me wondering what it would actually feel like.Recommended VideosNow that Ive played a full chapter, I have a much clearer picture of South of Midnight beyond its aesthetic. Hardly anything feels out of place, as every system, set piece, and locale connects back to a clear and humble artistic vision. Its a bit of a rarity for a modern game of its size: a tightly crafted adventure thats laser focused on being exactly what it wants to be.RelatedMy demo takes me through South of Midnights third chapter. At that point in the story, a hurricane has already washed over the small town of Prospero. Playing as Hazel, Im left to sort through the wreckage as I move through an eerily serene swamp baking in the Southern sun. Whats refreshing to learn right off the bat is that South of Midnight doesnt burden players with an overwhelmingly large map. This is a classically linear adventure game, a decision that works entirely in its favor. This doesnt feel like a world composed of repeated assets to create the illusion of scale. Every corner of Prospero feels delicately handcrafted. When I walk into a dilapidated house, Im taken aback by how much it feels like a real space. Theres a molding mattress nestled under a stairwell, family photos on the wall, even a quilt loosely draped over a banister. In these cramped spaces, I can feel their old owners trying to solve their storage needs with barely any space to work with.Compulsion GamesTheres an authenticity there that goes beyond aesthetic. What sticks out to me most during my playthrough is the foreclosure signs on houses and notes tacked to doors from a shady company forcibly reclaiming houses in a land grab. I can feel the economic struggle of the community in those details. All of that is by design, as Writer and Narrative Director Zaire Lanier tells me in an interview.Prospero is a small town, and a lot of small towns in America north, south, east, west do have those kinds of problems, Lanier tells Digital Trends. They dont have resources. People move away and dont come back. But theyre still places that matter to people, and places that have a culture and history. The way we have Hazel interacting with those things, shes emphatic. Shell be mad that your house got foreclosed for you! But we also have glimpses of community. Youll go into a house and see pictures of families or leftover quilts. Even though the world is kind of empty because of the hurricane, we populate it to make it feel lived in. This was someones home and it had to be left behind because of a natural disaster.Thats all brought to life thanks to South of Midnights distinct art style, which mimics physical stop-motion animation. Ive appreciated what Ive seen in trailers, but its even more impressive up close and in motion. Early in the chapter, I meet a giant catfish whos in need of help. As I get close to the screen, I can see the attention paid to his construction. Hes a patchwork of textures, as if he was knitted into existence with fabrics salvaged around town. Though everything here is a 3D model, characters look like they were crafted by hand.Compulsion GamesThat look came from research. The team was inspired by fellow Canadians Clyde Henry Productions, an animation studio that Compulsion tapped to create a handmade intro cinematic for the game. Compulsion studied Clyde Henrys work closely, reverse engineering the physical models used in its own films to convincingly mirror them in 3D. Art Director Whitney Clayton explains that the process inspired its artists to break out of their usual habits and take notes from a different mediums nuances.Theres a lot of questions that came up that we didnt realize would be questions, Clayton tells Digital Trends. If this existed in real life, what would the scale be? Because the scale next to a human will determine the size of a knit on somebody, or the amount of detail one could put into something by hand. It brought up a lot of questions of what checkboxes do the artist need to always consider when theyre making a prop. And by the time we got to the third or fourth prop, they started to internalize it.It doesnt take long for me to grasp the straightforward gameplay loop. I walk through the bayou, occasionally poking around for collectible Floofs hidden behind little platforming segments squirreled away in optional paths. I have a double jump, air dash, and glide to help me get around, and I learn to wall run on billboards and hanging quilts midway through the chapter. All of my movements feel fluid, despite South of Midnight boldly opting to replicate a filmic animating on twos look (everything is still running at 60 frames per second under that, and picky players can disable the frame trick). As I explore, I also get a feel for Hazels weaving powers, which play into both exploration and combat. For the former, I can use magical threads to construct platforms, break down debris in my path, and yank fallen scraps of metal off the ground to find hidden Floofs. Those powers mostly come into play during battles against dark creatures, called Haints. These happen in set arenas placed on my path. When I walk into one, the environment closes in around me and I have to wipe out a few creatures to purify my way forward. Like everything else in South of Midnight, the combat system isnt a mechanically heavy hodgepodge of ideas. Every single tool needs to be used in battle, from basic attacks to Hazels primary weave power. Failing to use those is a recipe for disaster. I almost got wiped out in my very first fight because I didnt heed the developers early warnings to utilize my dodge roll.Compulsion GamesHaints hit like a truck and Hazel doesnt have a healing flash to drink out of. Instead, each arena only has one healing aura that can be picked up if she needs it. Otherwise, the only way Hazel heals is when she takes down an enemys health and then unravels them, granting her a bit of health. Its South of Midnights wholesome version of Dooms finishers. Once I understood the flow, it was easy to find the rhythm of battles. Its a game of careful healing resource management, as I always wanted to know when I could push the advantage on an already weakened enemy if I took a hit and needed a quick heal. That makes for some surprisingly tense fights where it feels like Im fighting down to the wire.Aside from slashing, Hazel has a few weaving powers at her disposal. One yanks an enemy towards me while another repels them, two tools that are crucial in letting me manage enemy spacing when I get crowded. Another power lets me temporarily web an enemy up in thread, perfect for shutting down an incoming attack and quickly pushing the momentum to burn down a health bar in a pinch. The spell-casting system calls Hogwarts Legacyto mind, but it pulls more depth out of much fewer options. If theres any worry I have about the full game, its that these fights seem like they could get old fast. I was tossed into a handful of battles throughout the chapter and each felt more or less the same. I only faced off against a few enemy types, from a bug-spewing hive to hulking Haint whose projectiles I could send back with the right timing. I get the sense that Compulsion is being conservative with how much it peppers battles in so as not to stretch its concise system too thin, though Im hoping theres a little more to basic enemy variety in later chapters.Hazel does have more tools that Ive yet to see, though. Theres a whole skill tree that augments each weaving power and gives Hazel a few extra tricks. During my demo, Id unlock the ability to perform a ground slam attack. Later in the game, she also gets a raggedy doll companion named Crouton who can mind control an enemy and sic it against another. Hopefully theres enough in the tree to evolve later fights.Any combat nitpicks dont feel like theyll be terribly significant in the grand scheme of South of Midnight. More than anything, its appeal is in its narrative so far. Its a story forged from film and literary influences, telling a magical realist tale in the vein of Big Fish (in fact, thats the name of Chapter 3). Compulsion drew from a wide range of Southern gothic art history to build a world that fit into that storytelling tradition.I read Alice Walker, Toni Moirrson. I reread Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. I watched Eves Bayou, which is a fantastic movie, Lanier says. And this isnt Southern gothic, but I rewatched Spike Lees Crooklyn. Its one of my favorite movies. The mother daughter relationship is a loose framework and I really like how its handled. We pulled from a lot of different things. I felt more pulled to some of the Black ones to create that air of authenticity. What does Black Southern gothic look like, specifically for Hazel?Amood thats a bit contemplative, macabre, and symbolic. That research comes out in the writing. While theres an overarching narrative, Chapter 3 houses its own narrative arc that almost reads like a short myth. The chapter has me freeing my catfish pal from the Benjy Tree. I dont know what that means at first, but I unravel that mystery as the chapter progresses. It builds to a dark revelation about a deadly spat between brothers, turning one into a living tree that I eventually need to climb in a climactic platforming segment. That segment is soundtracked by a full-on musical number, as the other brother sings what happened from his perspective. Its a dark fairytale, but one born out of a grounded pain that runs through Prosperos roots. For Clayton, the goal wasnt to copy scenes from books and movies. Rather, it was to dig into the genre and figure out how its built. Its not so dissimilar to the way the art team took apart Clyde Henrys models to reverse engineer them into video game assets.Theres a deconstructing of what the visual tropes of Southern gothic are, Clayton says. Theres this feeling of being trapped in time because these stories are usually in some way timeless. Theyre usually set in a small, quiet place and everything is condensed in that place. Theres an overarching narrative, but then you have these very intimate stories that follow along with that. You kind of feel like the world stands still a bit. Theres the decaying architecture, the hanging moss on the live oaks. It all makes for a mood thats a bit contemplative, macabre, and symbolic. All of this careful work shows in the final product, at least in the snippet I played. From evocative sound and visuals to a sub story that feels like it was ripped from local legend, South of Midnight looks to be accomplishing exactly what Compulsion set out to do. No more, no less. Thats refreshing in an age of bloated games that try too hard to be everything for everyone. This feels more sustainable by comparison: a focused vision thats appropriately scoped around an audience that approaches games as artworks with perspectives, rather than seeing them as something to consume and spit out. I know which group I fall into.South of Midnight launches on April 9 for Xbox Series X/S and PC.Editors Recommendations

    www.digitaltrends.com
Despite launching in a bit more than a month, the Pixel 9a holds little mystery after a slew of different leaks. We already knew the potential colors were Porcelain, Obsidian, Peony, and Iris, but we hadnt actually gotten a good look at them until today. Android Authority shared images from a confidential source that show four cases for the Pixel 9a, presumably in the same colors the phone will arrive in.The case colors line up with the suspected phone colors, although the specific marketing name for each isnt finalized. Still, its not hard to guess Peony is pink, Obsidian is black, Iris is purple, and Porcelain is white.Recommended VideosThe leaks dont reveal any surprises about the phones design, either. The Pixel 9a has the same basic design as the rest of the Pixel 9 lineup, though there are a few minor differences; for example, the camera bar doesnt jut out from the phone like it does in the Pixel 9.Android AuthorityThere isnt a confirmed launch date for the phone, although rumors suggest its likely to be released in March of this year. The Pixel 9a is expected to start around $499 and go up from there depending on the configuration. It could also come with an impressive 5,100mAh battery, which would give it greater capacity than the Pixel 9 Pro XL.Please enable Javascript to view this contentEverything weve seen of the Pixel 9a suggests it will be a budget-friendly mid-range phone. • RTX 5090 meltdown woes spark flashbacks to RTX 4090 fire hazards
    www.digitaltrends.com
Nvidias RTX 5090 is facing early concerns as reports of melting 16-pin power connectors have emerged, evoking memories of the infamous RTX 4090 connector failures. Two separate incidents have surfaced, both pointing to potential issues with the GPUs power delivery system, despite Nvidias efforts to prevent such problems with its updated 12V-26 connector standard.According to The Verge, the first reported incident involved an RTX 5090 user on Reddit who noticed a burning smell while playing Battlefield 5, leading them to inspect their system. Upon closer examination, they discovered that their power cable had melted on both endswhere it connected to the graphics card and where it plugged into the power supply unit (PSU).Recommended Videos Its worth mentioning that they were using an unofficial third party cable from Moddiy, instead of the one provided with the GPU. The manufacturer has claimed that it follows the updated 12V-26 design, complies with ATX 3.0 and PCIe 5.0 standards, and supports up to 600W. Additionally, the user stated that they had been using the same power cable for over two years with their RTX 4090 FE without any issues. They also ensured that the cable was securely connected, confirming it clicked into place.Whats interesting here is that Nvidia has already moved to the updated 12V-26 connector standard, which was supposed to reduce the risk of overheating and ensure better contact between the pins. However, backward compatibility with older 12VHPWR cables may be contributing to continued failures, as not all third-party cables may fully adhere to the revised specifications. The second incident comes from Spanish YouTuber Toro Tocho who went through a similar experience with burnt connectors on both the GPU and PSU ends using an RTX 5090 Founders Edition. The affected user was using an FSP Hydro Ti PRO 1000W PSU along with a standard 16-pin PCIe 5.0 cable bundled with the power supply. Both incidents suggest that power connector issues are still a concern, despite Nvidias revisions. The first case hints at compatibility risks with third-party cables, while the second case highlights potential high power draw beyond expected limits. Nvidia has yet to issue an official statement, leaving users to double-check their power connections and monitor their hardware for signs of overheating. Whether these are isolated incidents or the start of a wider problem remains to be seen, but for now, RTX 5090 owners might want to keep a fire extinguisher nearbyjust in case.Editors Recommendations

Civilization 7Lets make sure your Civilization 7 experience starts off on the right foot with these essential tips and tricks.Recommended Videos2k GamesLike previous games in the series, Civilization 7 allows you to win in multiple ways. This time, you can win through Cultural, Military, Economic, or Scientific goals. Each path has different objectives you need to hit across each age before giving you one final victory condition in the Modern Age. You dont need to only invest in one of these categories, and wouldnt make it far if you did, but starting the game with a focus in mind is essential for guiding your civilization.RelatedThat begins with picking your leader. Civilization 7 has dozens of leaders to choose from and each one has two focuses, such as economic and militaristic, plus a unique ability and agenda that further diversifies them. Knowing which victory type youre going for will make this list far more manageable, and then you can just compare the unique skills of each leader to make a final decision. While the Leaders main attributes are important, you also shouldnt spend too long stressing over the other details unless youre playing on the highest difficulty or in PvP.Be aware that during each of the three age transitions you will select a new civ from a few options to replace your previous one. When this happens, you will have a second opportunity to pick a civ with the same or different attributes. While you can pivot here if you wish, it is highly recommended that you continue focusing on your initial victory condition. This is also where Legacy Points come into play. These points are earned by reaching specific milestones in each of the four corresponding Legacy Paths. We will talk more about those later, but it is another small opportunity to either reinforce your goal or help redistribute your bonuses if youve been lacking in other areas. If youre new to the entire 4X genre and have no idea where to start, choosing random to start is a fantastic way to begin. Dont be tempted to simply choose militaristic. While that might sound the most fun, it is one of the more challenging ways to play before you understand all the other systems and resources you need to pay attention to besides your army.2K GamesWhen you first land on a map, you will want to expand in three major ways: uncovering the map with a scout, building out your capital city, and setting up additional towns.Scouts will be the first unit you can produce, so make one right away and send them off into the deep unknown. Knowing whats around you in terms of resources, oceans, independent powers, and other proper civilizations will guide your entire strategy. A good rule of thumb is to navigate your account between tiles with the VII logo on them since they indicate some point of interest. Also, remember to take advantage of a scouts ability to take a turn to expand their sight range so you dont waste turns moving towards a dead end or ocean and then have to backtrack. When it comes to your capital, the tiles you can expand to each have different resources they offer once you claim them, but that shouldnt be your only concern. You want to balance getting enough of the necessary resources especially gold while also working towards bonus tiles on the map that give you additional resources. There are also times when you dont want to expand but either add a structure onto an existing tile for bonuses. Pay attention to what youre building and what benefits it can get or give to adjacent areas. If you need to, you can build over areas youve already settled but that shouldnt be done until after the first Age if it can be avoided. Finally, founding new settlements is a big priority in the early game. You can do this with your own settler units, or by building your relations to an Independant Power long enough to incorporate them into your civ. However, be aware that there is a limit on how many new Towns you can settle in each Age so try and pick ones with plenty of resources nearby to expand to. Also, dont upgrade all your Towns into Cities. This costs more and more gold to do, and there are positives and negatives to each settlement type. It is best to keep an equal balance of Towns to Cities.2K GamesThe main resources you will be juggling in Civilization 7 are gold, happiness, influence, food, production, science, and culture. These each serve a purpose, but nearly every building will cost you one resource in order to provide more of another. Once you start making new settlements, you should focus each one on producing a couple of those to all balance out in the end. While you shouldnt let anything get critically low in a city, the most important thing is that your total from all sources on each resource is in the positive.Map resources are also too many and spread out to get the benefits of each type. As soon as you can make merchants and have a positive enough relationship with your neighboring Leaders, get trade routes going to add more resource buffs than you could get staying isolated.2K GamesInfluence is a brand new mechanic in Civilization 7 that is spent on all diplomatic interactions. This includes improving relations with other Leaders, accepting their proposals for temporary buffs, giving you advantages when war is declared, incorporating Independant Powers, and more. You will have an Influence income each turn much like gold that you need to pay attention to and grow. You dont want to get caught without enough when theres a proposal you want to take advantage of (or deny to spite that Leader) and bigger actions cost hundreds of Influence.2K / 2KCivilization 7 still offers the same four primary victory conditions we spoke about earlier but is much more guided in helping you know exactly how to achieve that end goal one step at a time. Your objectives are always listed on the top left of your screen which will push you forward on your target Legacy Path. Whichever path youre taking, make sure youre always working towards that next objective. After the first few, however, the next step wont be something you can directly work towards, such as asking you to research a technology that isnt yet an option. This is when you want to open your tech or culture skill tree and check out the paths available during that Age.Like any skill tree, you will need to progress through the right set of earlier skills to unlock the option to research the one you need, and the path isnt always obvious. In fact, you need to pay close attention even when studying the tree since the lines connecting each skill dont always move forward linearly like it looks a first. Quite often a skill at the top will curve down and connect to one near the bottom or vice versa. It pays to double-check which skill actually leads you to the next objective so you dont spend 10 or more turns researching something that doesnt connect to what you need it to.Editors Recommendations

  • I cant wait for the OLED MacBook Pro but theres bad news for MacBook Air fans
    www.digitaltrends.com
Its no secret that Apple sometimes waits a little longer than its competitors when it comes to releasing new tech in its products, but that approach often makes the delay worthwhile. Just look at the M4 iPad Pro: rival tablets have had OLED displays for years, but when Apple entered the fray in 2024, its tandem OLED panel blew everyone else out of the water.Ive been hoping for a long time that the company will pull a similar move with its best MacBooks, bringing OLED screens to its popular laptops that are far above what anyone else can offer. And now, it looks like theres some good news and some bad news on that front, and it all depends on whether youre a fan of the MacBook Pro or the MacBook Air.Recommended VideosYou see, Korean news outlet The Elec has just released a report (with a machine-translated version) explaining Apples plans to bring OLED tech to its laptops. And theres plenty of welcome reading for MacBook Pro users contained within. According to the report, Apple is working on outfitting future MacBook Pro models with the same sort of hybrid OLED panel that found its way into the iPad Pro. That means better brightness, contrast, and power efficiency compared to the current MacBook Pro, which comes with a mini-LED screen. And considering how good that display already is, the step up could be all the more significant.Chris Hagan / Digital TrendsAnd thats not all. If you read between the lines, there could be another significant upgrade on the way for the MacBook Pro: a thinner chassis.Thats because Apples tandem OLED method enabled the company to improve its screens output while also slimming down their proportions. If Apple brings the same tech to the MacBook Pro, we could see similar improvements. That said, its not nailed on. The MacBook Pro has components that might be tough to slim down completely, with space required for things like the cooling system that arent included in the iPad Pro. Still, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has claimed that Apple is planning a true overhaul for its OLED MacBook Pro, which could launch as soon as 2026. That includes making it noticeably thinner.Im still chugging along on a 2021 MacBook Pro with M1 Pro chip, and for the most part it does a good job for me. But with a major overhaul on the way, including a stunning display and thinner design, 2026 could be the year I say goodbye to my current model and pull the trigger on a new one. By the sound of it, it should be a massive upgrade.AppleUnfortunately, things arent looking quite so rosy over in MacBook Air land. The same report from The Elec touched on Apples thinnest and lightest laptop, and its a mixed bag for Apple fans here. The Elec reiterates its own previous claim that Apple has delayed the OLED MacBook Air, pushing it back from 2027 to the much more distant 2029. While that element isnt new, its still disappointing to see it repeated. What is new is The Elecs claim that Apple will instead launch a MacBook Air with an improved display in 2027. This seems to be something of a stopgap move to fill the space vacated by the now-delayed OLED MacBook Air.So, what can we expected from this tuned-up LCD panel? Essentially, the new screens could be a significant step up, bringing improved performance and power efficiency compared to the MacBook Airs existing offering. That could give you better image quality, longer battery life, and a smoother all-round experience with less motion blur and more consistent brightness.AppleDont get me wrong, that all sounds great, and Id much rather have a MacBook Air with an improved LCD display than one that keeps the same tech Apple is currently using for many more years to come. But I cant help feeling disappointed, mainly because the report from The Elec seems to confirm that Apple really is pushing back its OLED MacBook Air for another four years. Thats a long time to wait, especially when many of Apples rivals already have some of the best thin laptops with OLED screens. If anyone can use this delay to bring out a class-leading OLED laptop, its Apple. But that will be small comfort to MacBook Air fans who have been clamoring for the tech to come to their favorite computer. While Im excited to see what happens to the MacBook Pro next year, its going to be a long wait for Apples lightest laptop.Editors Recommendations
