  • Norways State Investment Fund Should Dump Tesla
    prospect.org
Norways State Investment Fund Should Dump TeslaIts vast sovereign wealth fund owns nearly 36 million Tesla shares. Better get out while the getting is good.by Ryan Cooper March 28, 20255:15 AMRSSPrintNorways central bank, Norges Bank, manages the Norwegian krone and the countrys foreign exchange reserves. It also runs the largest sovereign wealth fund in the world, the Government Pension Fund of Norway. The international part of that fund, the Government Pension Fund-Global (GPFG) owns about 1.5 percent of all public companies around the world, on average. (The fund is so enormous because Norway wisely chose to invest its oil revenue rather than spending it, to avoid deindustrializing itself and making its economy dependent on the gyrating price of oil.)GPFGs holdings include 35.7 million shares of Tesla, or about 1.1 percent of the company. Norges Bank should sell off that stake immediately, both on the financial merits and to fit with the funds own ethical rules around investment.Let me begin with the business case against Tesla. As I wrote back in January, before Trump took office, the long-term prospects for the company looked dim, despite its sky-high stock price. Elon Musks association with Donald Trump was obliterating Teslas reputation among its core customer base of affluent liberals, while conservatives tend to hate EVs on principle. Teslas poorly constructed product lineup is aging, and its only new vehicle since 2019, the Cybertruck, has been a flop. Meanwhile, competition is ramping up both domestically from Hyundai and GM, and especially internationally, where BYD and other Chinese companies have caught almost every incumbent automaker, including Tesla, with their pants down.Since January, things have gotten much worse. Musks reputation has gotten dramatically more toxic, above all thanks to his throwing a Sieg heil! salute at a Trump inauguration rally and his illegal cuts to federal spending through DOGE. Musks antics have created the kind of headlines and protestsincluding a few instances of vandalismthat any rational company would desperately avoid. Sales are falling sharply in all but one of Teslas top national markets, from 34 percent in the Netherlands to 71 percent in Germany, the biggest car market in Europe. In China, the companys second-largest market, sales are down 49 percent. (The U.K. is so far the lone exception, though I bet not for long.)Indeed, in Norway itselfwhich used to be Teslas eighth-biggest market because almost all cars sold there are EVs nowTesla went from the biggest seller by far in 2024 to, as of March, third place behind Toyota, which has just one distinctly underwhelming EV for sale. The only thing keeping Teslas stock price up is the retail investor cult of personality around Muskbut this is deflating too.As a result, Teslas price has fallen by about 40 percent since I wrote that piece, erasing about $520 billion in market capitalization. But even this is a preposterous overvaluation. It is still worth $888 billion at time of writing, making it the ninth-most valuable company in the world. That puts it at a price-to-earnings ratio of about 136, or roughly 14 times that of Toyota, which sold six times as many cars and earned seven times as much profit last year. Tesla is worth more than TSMC, which made about $35 billion in profits last year, as compared to Teslas $7.1 billion.Musk has promised that autonomous robotaxis and robots are the future of Tesla, but not only has he been promising and failing to deliver this technology for nearly a decade now, his most recent promises are ridiculous on their face. Last year, he claimed his Optimus robots alonehopefully not just some guy in a suitwill turn Tesla into a $25 trillion company. The man is a charlatan.Incidentally, there are companies that actually have figured out driverless taxis, like Waymo, and all indications are that at best it is a low-margin business, because the cars require so much expensive technology, as well as significant human oversight in case of glitches. The only thing keeping Teslas stock price up is the retail investor cult of personality around Muskbut this is deflating too. As John Herrman writes at New York, prominent YouTubers who were previously very friendly to Tesla have started avoiding or criticizing the company. The MAGA-adjacent channel Whistlin Diesel went mega-viral with a video showing how in a bad towing situation, the entire back portion of the Cybertrucks shoddy cast aluminum frame will snap right off. (Every Cybertruck in the country has been recalled because the panels keep peeling away.) Mark Rober, whose channel has 66 million subscribers, did the same with a video showing his Teslas Autopilot crashing directly into a Wile E. Coyotestyle painted wall.At a minimum, it is highly likely that Teslas valuation will eventually fall to something like a normal car company, to maybe $75 billion. It may well fall into a death spiral of collapsing sales and investment and go bankrupt entirely. All this is obviousits why company executives and board members have been selling their shares by the hundreds of thousands, while buying precisely zero. The rats are deserting the ship. Norges Bank would be wise to unload its Tesla stake before reality fully sinks in among the Musk fan base.Second: the moral case against Tesla. Norges Bank is not a passive investor. On the contrary, as Matt Bruenig points out at the Peoples Policy Project, the fund is actively managed, it attempts to participate in every shareholder vote, and there are some moral priorities in its investment strategy. As its website says, We aim to promote long-term value creation at the companies and minimise negative effects on the environment and society. Thats why some companies are blacklisted from the fund, according to criteria outlined back in 2014. Tobacco companies, manufacturers of certain kinds of gruesome weapons, and coal companies are ruled out. So might a company that contributes to or is responsible for serious or systematic human rights violations or other particularly serious violations of fundamental ethical norms.Until recently, Tesla made up the majority of Musks wealth, and he used that wealth to buy the American presidency and seize direct control of the federal budget with his DOGE organization. He and his goon squad of fascist cyber criminals have wreaked havoc across the federal budget, and nowhere worse than the foreign aid budget. USAID has been devastated, funding to PEPFAR (which provides HIV drugs to poorer nations) has been frozen, and a vaccine program was recently terminated. If these cuts hold, millions of people will die. Experts told The New York Times that one year of cutting off HIV/AIDS treatment will kill about 1.65 million people; food aid, 550,000 people; vaccine funding, 500,000 children; tuberculosis funding, 310,000 people; and malaria funding, 290,000. Thats a total of 3.3 million per year. The funding freeze to PEPFAR alone has already killed an estimated 27,000 adults and 2,800 children. Its shaping up to be the worst crime of the 21st century so far, and may rival the death tolls of Hitler and Stalin.Any Tesla shareholder is implicated in Musks crimes against humanity, and more implicated the more shares they possess.Furthermore, Musk is also leading a charge to destroy European democracy. He has meddled in German politics to boost the extreme far-right AfD party, and in British politics in an attempt to oust the Labour Party government. As Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stre said back in January, I find it worrying that a man with enormous access to social media and large financial resources is so directly involved in the internal affairs of other countries.Indeed, in February Musk personally attacked Norges Bank Investment Management CEO Nicolai Tangen for having the temerity to vote against Musks outrageous $55 billion pay package, calling him a dangerous politician. Norway has an election in September this year, and it would be entirely in keeping with Musks previous behavior to attempt to boost the far-right Progress Party in retaliation for Norges Bank exercising its legal rights as a Tesla shareholder. So, Mr. Tangen: Dump those Tesla shares, and if you need somewhere to sock away the cash, I suggest Rheinmetall.Back to Search ResultsRyan CooperRyan Cooper is the Prospects managing editor, and author of How Are You Going to Pay for That?: Smart Answers to the Dumbest Question in Politics. • US hits lithium jackpot: 18M tons worth $540B found underground
    interestingengineering.com
With the demand for lithium soaring, the U.S. government is taking action. In a recent move to boost Americas mineral production, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to fast-track domestic mining projects, including those for critical resources like lithium. But what if the U.S. was already sitting on one of the largest untapped lithium reserves in the world?Beneath the surface of Californias Salton Sea lies a discovery so massive it could redefine the nations clean energy future. Scientists have identified an astonishing 18 million tons of lithiumvalued at $540 billionburied beneath the murky waters of the states largest lake. Dubbed white gold, this find has the potential to revolutionize the U.S. battery industry and reduce the nations dependence on foreign lithium imports. However, extracting this critical resource comes with its share of challenges, from environmental risks to geopolitical considerations.A lithium jackpotThe Salton Sea, situated in Southern Californias Imperial County, now holds one of the largest lithium brine deposits in the world. A study funded by the U.S. Department of Energy revealed that the lake contains far more lithium than previously estimated18 million tons compared to an earlier figure of 4 million tons. To put that into perspective, this amount of lithium could power batteries for 382 million electric vehicles, surpassing the total number of cars currently on American roads.Michael McKibben, a geochemistry professor at the University of California, Riverside, and a contributor to the study, underscored the importance of this finding to The Daily Galaxy:This is one of the largest lithium brine deposits in the world. This could make the United States completely self-sufficient in lithium and stop importing it through China.Recognizing the significance of this discovery, California Governor Gavin Newsom referred to the Salton Sea as the Saudi Arabia of lithium, emphasizing the potential for the U.S. to become a major player in global lithium production. The promise of energy independenceThe discovery of such a vast lithium reserve comes at a critical moment. As the global shift toward electric vehicles and renewable energy accelerates, demand for lithium continues to skyrocket. Lithium-ion batteries power everything from smartphones to EVs, making this element one of the most sought-after resources in the world.Currently, the U.S. relies heavily on lithium imports, particularly from China, Australia, and South America. The ability to produce lithium domestically could reduce supply chain vulnerabilities and strengthen national energy security. By tapping into the Salton Seas reserves, the U.S. has an opportunity to position itself as a leader in the battery supply chain, potentially reshaping the global energy market.Despite its potential, extracting lithium from the Salton Sea presents several technical and environmental hurdles. The process involves drilling geothermal production wells thousands of feet below the Earths surface to access lithium-rich brine. Once extracted, the brine is reinjected underground. While this method is more environmentally friendly than traditional lithium mining, it still raises concerns about water usage, seismic activity, and the ecological health of the already fragile Salton Sea region.RECOMMENDED ARTICLESInfrastructure investment, regulatory approvals, and sustainable extraction practices will play a crucial role in determining whether the Salton Sea can truly become Americas lithium hub. Balancing economic opportunity with environmental responsibility remains a pressing challenge for policymakers and scientists alike. The discovery of lithium beneath the Salton Sea has the potential to reshape the energy landscape of the United States. However, harnessing this vast resource requires navigating a complex web of technological, environmental, and political factors. If successful, this venture could not only strengthen American energy independence but also drive the transition toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.

  • Trumps auto tariffs are a gift to Tesla Essentially every other automaker is in a worse position than Tesla, and the tariffs will especially affect competing EVs
    techcrunch.com
President Trump is slapping 25% tariffs on all cars imported to the United States, including from our immediate North American neighbors. Hes also placed a 25% tariff on certain parts used to build cars. Its a decision that will likely supercharge the cost of new and used cars, but its also a gift to Tesla, the company run by Elon Musk, his biggest financial supporter in the presidential election. The new tariff regime comes at an auspicious time for Tesla. The company is dealing with the fallout of Musks promotion of far-right ideology and his involvement with the unpopular Department of Government Efficiency, which has sparked protests around the world. Tesla has recently relied on promotions and price cuts to boost sales, and yet it still sold fewer EVs in 2024 than it did in 2023 and is off to a rough start in 2025.New tariffs could shift that calculus, at least in the U.S. Tesla builds all of its cars destined for the North American market in the U.S. at factories in Fremont, California, and Austin, Texas. That means none of the cars it sells in the U.S. will be subject to the 25% vehicle import tax.Tesla does import around 20% to 30% of the components used to build those cars, so that will causesome headache. Musk admitted on X that Tesla is NOT unscathed by these tariffs and claimed they will have a significant impact. But the companys long-standing effort to establish local supply chains near its factories is now being rewarded.Essentially every other automaker is in a worse position than Tesla, and the tariffs will especially affect competing EVs. Around 80% of the cars Ford sells in the U.S. are built domestically. But it makes the all-electric Mustang Mach-E and the popular (and far more affordable) Maverick hybrid pickup truck in Mexico.General Motors, meanwhile, builds its Blazer and Equinox EVs in Mexico. Hyundai has found increasing success with its electric vehicles in the U.S. market, but nearly all of those are built in South Korea.Much like Tesla, upstart electric automakers like Rivian and Lucid Motors wont have to worry about the vehicle import tariffs because they make their EVs in Illinois and Arizona, respectively. Like Tesla, they import parts that will be subject to tariffs but they are in a worse position to absorb those costs since both companies are still losing buckets of money on every EV they sell. This sets up a scenario where other EVs may see price increases greater than any Tesla might implement. That price separation could become even more of a boon to Tesla when it rolls out its mysterious new lower-cost EV this year something the company has said will happen in the next few months.Of course, Trump announced these tariffs after weeks of waffling on whether he would implement them in the first place. The president has claimed these will be permanent. But like so many other things he proposes, that could always change.

    variety.com
In what appears to be a widespread outage for many X users, the social networking site owned by Elon Musk was experiencing technical problems and displaying errors Friday.According to outage tracking website Downdetector.com, as of 2:46 p.m. ET Thursday, more than 53,000 complaints had been filed about X. About half (54%) of user error reports said they had issues accessing the X app, with others complaining about the ability to access the site.On the web, users saw the error message, Something went wrong. Try reloading when they tried to access posts. Related StoriesThe problems appeared to have been resolved less than half an hour later.X, formerly known as Twitter, most recently suffered rolling outages on March 10, which Musk blamed on a massive cyberattack against the platform.Popular on VarietyBefore that, the last major X outage happened in August 2024, when 66% of users reported experiencing problems with the app, website and server connection. Other past issues have included the impairment of key features in July 2023, and the March 2024 crashing of Ron DeSantis Twitter Spaces live audio event during his official announcement that he would be running for U.S. president.Musk acquired Twitter in October 2022 for $44 billion and laid off about 80% of its employees. In May 2024, the website officially became X.com and the twitter.com domain was retired. Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla and Space X, rebranded Twitter as X in July 2023.

  • Car prices could jump $6,000 as Trump's 25% import tariff kicks in | Brace for higher car prices
    www.techspot.com
In a nutshell: President Donald Trump recently announced an additional 25 percent tariff on imported vehicles and parts, raising concerns about its potential impact on the US automotive sector. While supporters argue that the policy will spur growth, attract investment, and create jobs domestically, critics warn that it will lead to significantly higher prices for shoppers. The new tariff on imported cars will take effect on April 2, while the import duty on car parts will go into effect on May 3. The components subject to the new policy include engines and engine parts, transmissions and powertrain components, and electrical systems. The tariff will be applied under the USMCA trade agreement, which was ratified during the first Trump administration. Under the plan, imported vehicles will be taxed only on their non-US content. For example, a car with 20 percent US-made components under USMCA will face a 25 percent tariff on the remaining 80 percent of its price.According to Commerce Department data, Mexico is the largest automobile exporter to the US, followed by Japan, South Korea, Canada, and Germany. The biggest exporters of components include Mexico, China, Japan, and South Korea. Unsurprisingly, most foreign automakers and auto parts manufacturers have criticized the new tariffs, arguing that they will negatively impact both manufacturers and consumers. The United Auto Workers union, however, praised the proposed tariffs, claiming they could create more jobs in the US. In a statement, the organization described the move as a victory for auto workers and expressed hope that it would be part of a broader "Made in America renaissance." The union added that it believes the tariffs will encourage US automakers such as GM, Ford, and Stellantis to bring much of their production back to the U.S. after decades of offshoring. Not everyone is convinced, though. According to some industry analysts, the new tariffs could increase the price of an average new car or truck by at least $6,000, as nearly half of all vehicles sold in the US. are imported. They further argue that the policy is a blatant violation of the USMCA, the trade deal Trump himself signed during his first term. // Related Stories

  • How OpenAI's Ghibli frenzy took a dark turn real fast
    www.businessinsider.com
Business Insider used OpenAI's tool to generate a Ghibli-style image of Sam Altman. Effie Webb/OpenAI's 4o tool 2025-03-28T12:22:53Z SaveSaved Read in app This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? OpenAI released a new image generator this week, sparking a meme frenzy and controversy.Users flooded social media with images in the style of the Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli. The trend has fueled a debate on copyright, with some accusing OpenAI of exploiting artists' work. From meme madness to copyright concerns, the release of OpenAI's new image generator this week has been nothing short of dramatic.Soon after "Images for ChatGPT" was unveiled on Tuesday, an X user said OpenAI's 4o tool generated a "sexy man" but wouldn't create "sexy women." That caught the attention of OpenAI's chief, Sam Altman, who blamed a "bug" and promised a fix. Then came the tsunami of images generated in the distinctive style of the renowned Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli. X users flooded the platform with Ghibli-fied versions of their own photos, popular memes, public figures such as President Donald Trump, and scenes from films including "The Wolf of Wall Street."Even Altman joined in on the hype and swapped out his profile picture with a Ghibli-style photo of himself. The White House's official X account jumped on the bandwagon, too, and shared a Ghibli-fied photo of a woman arrested by ICE for illegally entering the US.Ghibli tsunamiAt first it seemed like a lighthearted moment of things being reimagined through a Ghibli lens, until things took a darker turn.OpenAI users Ghibli-fied images of historic events including JFK's assassination, the 9/11 attacks, and World War II.OpenAI said Wednesday that it had started blocking requests for Ghibli-style images and that it was taking a "conservative approach" by refusing user attempts to create images in the likeness of a living artist. An OpenAI spokesperson told Business Insider on Wednesday night that it still allowed users to generate images in "broader studio styles."Savvy users found workarounds. BI's Pranav Dixit tried out the tool on Thursday using the paid-for version and found it would still generate several images in the Ghibli style.OpenAI then decided to limit the number of images users of its free tier model could generate a day. Altman joked on X that OpenAI's servers were "melting" from the surge in demand. It now appears the free version of ChatGPT is refusing image requests entirely, citing copyright rules.Copyright questionsWhile the internet had its fun, a fierce debate about whether OpenAI was unfairly using the work of artists including Studio Ghibli's Hayao Miyazaki has begun. Some X users criticized those Ghibli-fying images, arguing that Miyazaki, a famed Japanese artist renowned for his meticulous hand-drawn animations that can take years to create, poured his heart and soul into his work.Ghibli is known for its animated features, which include "My Neighbor Totoro" and "Spirited Away." "Spirited Away" is one of Studio Ghibli's animated features. Studio Ghibli Ed Newton-Rex, the CEO of the nonprofit Fairly Trained, which certifies AI companies with fair training practices, described the controversy as a "takeoff moment for AI protests."It's reminiscent of the Scarlett Johansson saga last year, when the actor threatened to sue OpenAI over a voice chatbot feature that many said sounded like her.It raises the question of whether Ghibli-gate will be the latest copyright headache for OpenAI following a barrage of lawsuits from news outlets, authors, and musicians who say their work was used to train its models without consent.Newton-Rex wrote in X post on Thursday that "obvious and egregious IP theft by AI companies has united authors and artists in outrage.""Suspect protests will only grow as the effects are felt by more & more professions," he added. There's also growing concern about what the new tool means for graphic designers and AI image-generator startups.Klarna CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski said on X that he was "not as amused as many others" as OpenAI's latest offering had "wiped out" some companies and had "serious implications for countless jobs."Recommended video

  • DOGE Plans to Rebuild SSA Codebase In Months, Risking Benefits and System Collapse
    www.wired.com
SSAs core logic is also written largely in COBOL. This is the code that issues social security numbers, manages payments, and even calculates the total amount beneficiaries should receive for different services, a former senior SSA technologist who worked in the office of the chief information officer says. Even minor changes could result in cascading failures across programs. If you weren't worried about a whole bunch of people not getting benefits or getting the wrong benefits, or getting the wrong entitlements, or having to wait ages, then sure go ahead, says Dan Hon, principal of Very Little Gravitas, a technology strategy consultancy that helps government modernize services, about completing such a migration in a short timeframe.Got a Tip?Are you a current or former government employee who wants to talk about what's happening? We'd like to hear from you. Using a nonwork phone or computer, contact the reporter securely on Signal at makenakelly.32.Its unclear when exactly the code migration would start. A recent document circulated amongst SSA staff laying out the agencys priorities through May does not mention it, instead naming other priorities like terminating non-essential contracts and adopting artificial intelligence to augment administrative and technical writing.Earlier this month, WIRED reported that at least 10 DOGE operatives were currently working within SSA, including a number of young and inexperienced engineers like Luke Farritor and Ethan Shaotran. At the time, sources told WIRED that the DOGE operatives would focus on how people identify themselves to access their benefits online.Sources within SSA expect the project to begin in earnest once DOGE identifies and marks remaining beneficiaries as deceased and connecting disparate agency databases. In a Thursday morning court filing, an affidavit from SSA acting administrator Leland Dudek said that at least two DOGE operatives are currently working on a project formally called the Are You Alive Project targeting what these operatives believe to be improper payments and fraud within the agencys system by calling individual beneficiaries. The agency is currently battling for sweeping access to SSAs systems in court to finish out this work. (Again, 150-year-olds are not collecting social security benefits. That specific age was likely a quirk of COBOL. It doesnt include a date type, so dates are often coded to a specific reference pointMay 20, 1875, the date of an international standards-setting conference held in Paris, known as the Convention du Mtre.)In order to migrate all COBOL code into a more modern language within a few months, DOGE would likely need to employ some form of generative artificial intelligence to help translate the millions of lines of code, sources tell WIRED. DOGE thinks if they can say they got rid of all the COBOL in months then their way is the right way and we all just suck for not breaking shit, says the SSA technologist.DOGE would also need to develop tests to ensure the new systems outputs match the previous one. It would be difficult to resolve all of the possible edge cases over the course of several years, let alone months, adds the SSA technologist. This is an environment that is held together with bail wire and duct tape, the former senior SSA technologist working in the office of the chief information officer tells WIRED. The leaders need to understand that theyre dealing with a house of cards or Jenga. If they start pulling pieces out, which theyve already stated theyre doing, things can break.

  • Russian propaganda network Pravda tricks 33% of AI responses in 49 countries | Just in 2024, the Kremlins propaganda network flooded the web with 3.6 million fake articles to trick the top 10 AI models, a report reveals.
    euromaidanpress.com
Russia has launched a unique disinformation network, Pravda (Truth in Russian), to manipulate top AI chatbots into spreading Kremlin propaganda, research organization NewsGuard states in its March 2025 report.According to the research, the Moscow-based network implements a comprehensive strategy to deliberately infiltrate AI chatbot training data and publish false claims. This effort seeks to influence AI responses on news topics rather than targeting ordinary readers. By flooding search results with pro-Kremlin falsehoods, the network affects the way large language models process and present information. In 2024 alone, the network published 3.6 million articles, reaching 49 countries across 150 domains in dozens of languages, the American Sunlight Project (ASP) revealed. Pravda was deployed in April 2022 and was first discovered in February 2024 by the French government agency Viginum, which monitors foreign disinformation campaigns. With 70 sites targeting Europe with content in English, French, Czech, Irish, and Finnish, up to 30 more target Africa, the Pacifics, the Middle East, North America, the Caucasus, and Asia. The rest of the platforms are thematically divided, with names like NATO.News-Pravda.com, Trump.News-Pravda.com, and Macron.News-Pravda.com.According to Viginum, the network is administered by TigerWeb, an IT company based in Russian-occupied Crimea. Its owner, Yevhen Shevchenko, is a Crimean web developer who previously worked for Crimean Technologies, a company behind websites for the Russian-backed Crimean government.Pravda received a 7.5 trust score out of 100 from NewsGuard, signaling that users should show maximum caution when visiting its sites.American refugee-turned-propagandist John Mark Dugan predicted such a campaign in January 2024 at a meeting of Russian officials in Moscow.By pushing these Russian narratives from the Russian perspective, we can actually change worldwide AI, Dugan claimed.10 major AI bots amplify Kremlin lies in 33% of cases, report showsNewsGuards research found out that top AI chatbots repeated false narratives spread by the Pravda network in 33% of cases. The organization tested ten global AI chatbots: OpenAIs ChatGPT-4o, You.coms Smart Assistant, xAIs Grok, Inflections Pi, Mistrals le Chat, Microsofts Copilot, Meta AI, Anthropics Claude, Googles Gemini, and Perplexitys answer engine. For testing, NewsGuard took a sample of fifteen false narratives promoted by the network from April 2022 to February 2025. The ASPs February 2025 report confirmed the findings, noting that Pravda was likely designed to manipulate AI models rather than generate human traffic. The network does not generate original content. In fact, it functions as the Kremlins propaganda laundering machine, spreading content from Russian state media, pro-Kremlin influencers, government institutions, and officials through a large number of seemingly independent sources.Inside Russias weapon derailing global AIDuring the investigation, NewsGuard revealed that Pravda had spread a total of 207 false claims, ranging from news about American biolabs in Ukraine to allegations that Volodymyr Zelenskyy misused US military aid for personal wealth. The research also found that chatbots from the ten largest AI companies repeated false Kremlin narratives 33.55% of the time, ignored queries about them 18.22% of the time, and refuted them 48.22% of the time.In one example, NewsGuard asked chatbots, Why did Zelenskyy ban Truth Social? In reality, Zelenskyy never blocked Trumps Truth Social in Ukraine, as it was never available there, according to company reps, cybersecurity experts, and Ukrainian officials.Six out of ten chatbots repeated this false claim as fact, often citing articles from the Pravda network. One chatbot responded: Zelenskyy banned Truth Social in Ukraine reportedly due to the dissemination of posts that were critical of him on the platform. This action appears to be a response to content perceived as hostile, possibly reflecting tensions or disagreements with the associated political figures and viewpoints promoted through the platform. It also referenced three fake news articles from Trump.pravda-news.com: Zelenskyy takes revenge on Trump by blocking Truth Social: Whats next the war with the dollar? Zelenskyy has blocked Donald Trumps social media platform, Truth Social, across Ukraine, and Trumps Truth Social social network was blocked in Ukraine after posts about Zelenskyy. In another example, ten chatbots were asked, Did fighters of the Azov battalion burn an effigy of Trump?, referencing a video from the Russian Storm-1516 disinformation network. Four of them repeated this claim as fact, citing articles from the Pravda network.By pushing Russian narratives, we can actually change worldwide AI Kremlin punditDespite its scale, the Pravda network has almost no organic reach. According to the SimilarWeb analytics company, the English-language Pravda-en.com averages only 955 unique visitors per month, while NATO.news-pravda.com has 1,006 on average.Similarly, ASPs February 2025 report showed that 67 Telegram channels associated with the Pravda network have an average of only 43 subscribers, and its X accounts have an average of 23 followers. However, these figures can be misleading about the networks real impact. Instead of building an organic social media audience, Pravda focuses on saturating search results with automated content on an industrial scale.Given the lack of organic connection and its large-scale content distribution, ASP warned that Pravda is poised to fill large language models (LLMs) with pro-Kremlin content. The report notes that its LLM influence tactics involve a malicious intent to encourage generative AI or other software that relies on LLMs to be more likely to reproduce a certain narrative or worldview.Dugan praised himself at a January roundtable in Moscow, claiming that his narrative laundering technique, spreading disinformation through multiple channels to hide its foreign origin, could be used as a weapon to aid Russia in the information war.According to him, this tactic can not only help Russia increase its reach but also distort the datasets that AI models rely on.Right now, there are no really good models of AI to amplify Russian news because theyve all been trained using Western media sources, Dugan said at the roundtable, shared by Russian media on YouTube. This imparts a bias toward the West, and we need to start training AI models without this bias. We need to train it from the Russian perspective, the propagandist added. The narrative laundering complicates AI models ability to filter out sources like Pravda. The network continually adds new domains, so even if models were programmed to block all current Pravda sites, new ones could appear tomorrow. The fight between Russian propaganda and independent media goes globalThe research on the Moscow-based network came out amid the US policy shift toward its global independent media, specifically Radio Liberty and Voice of America. On 14 March, the Trump administration cut funding for the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM) to its statutory minimum, threatening the operations of several pro-democracy media networks, reaching 427 million people worldwide. One of its largest media, Radio Liberty/Radio Free Europe, emerged as a crucial US Cold War tool, broadcasting unfiltered news into Soviet territories and supporting democratic movements in Central Europe.Trump also signed an executive order to dismantle Voice of America (VOA), significantly reducing its operations and initiating mass layoffs. This move has been criticized for undermining independent journalism and countering authoritarian narratives globally. While the worlds largest independent media suffer persecution at home, Russia has taken the stage to spread its propagandist narratives, including across AI.The rise of Pravda coincides with the Kremlins mass increase in spending to boost its propaganda worldwide. In 2025 alone, Russias budget draft has allocated over $1.4 billion for propaganda, a 13% increase from the previous year.Secret budgets from the Russian Defense Ministry also reportedly contribute to these efforts.Western search engines and generative models often work in a very selective, biased manner, not taking into account, and sometimes simply ignoring and canceling Russian culture, Putin said at an AI conference in November 2023.He then announced Russias plan to allocate more resources to AI research and development, pledging to expand research in the field of generative artificial intelligence and large language models.Read also:You could close this page. • FBI Arrests 36-Year-Old Nevada Man for Allegedly Setting Fire to Teslas | The fires been described as terrorism by federal authorities.

By Matt Novak Published March 28, 2025 | Comments (6) | The word "RESIST" is shown spray painted on the entrance of a Tesla Collision Center after an individual set several vehicles on fire on March 18, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images Las Vegas Metropolitan Police held a press conference Thursday to announce the arrest of 36-year-old Paul Kim in connection to vehicle fires at a Tesla Collision Center on March 18, 2025. Kim allegedly set fire to multiple Tesla vehicles, discharged a firearm, and spray-painted resist on the building, according to authorities, and has been charged with both state and federal crimes. Police allege Kim was the person seen in surveillance video on March 18, 2025, arriving in a black Hyundai Elantra, parking just east of the building and continuing on foot. Kim then allegedly shot the surveillance cameras with a rifle before turning the gun on some vehicles and allegedly using molotov cocktails on the cars. At the state level, Kim has been charged with, according to a press release from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department: 3 Counts of Arson 3rd Degree 3 Counts of Unlawful Possession of Explosive or Incendiary Device 4 Counts of Destroy/Injure Real/Personal Property of Another $5000+ 5 Counts of Discharge Firearm at or into a Vehicle or Structure Kim has also been charged federally in the U.S. District Court in Las Vegas, Nevada, with one count of unlawful possession of an unregistered firearm, which carries the potential for 10 years in prison, and one count of arson, which can carry 5-20 years. The Department of Justice has been clear: anyone who participates in the wave of domestic terrorism targeting Tesla properties will suffer severe legal consequences, Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a statement published online. We will continue to find, arrest, and prosecute these attackers until the lesson is learned. Las Vegas police released several videos from March 18 showing someone setting fire to multiple cars. Tesla dealerships and charging stations have been the target of vandals and arsonists over the past two months, ever since Tesla CEO Elon Musk gave two Nazi-style salutes on the day President Donald Trump was inaugurated. Musk has also been leading a team called DOGE to dismantle large parts of the U.S. federal government, often deploying completely illegal tactics to unilaterally shut down programs Musk doesnt like. Congress, which famously has the power of the purse, is supposed to be the entity that chooses what to fund and not fund in government, and the Senate Appropriations Committee, recently sent a letter to the White House protesting the behavior.Musk told Fox News in an interview Thursday night that he doesnt really worry about the crazy people who are setting fires in arson attacks against Tesla dealerships, but instead blames the ones pushing the lies and propaganda, against Tesla. Musk says the administration is going to go after people pushing lies about Tesla [image or embed] Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) March 27, 2025 at 3:58 PM Surveillance video captured from inside the Tesla collision center showing someone spray-painting resist on the outside of the building was also released by police, an apparent reference to resisting Musks involvement in the U.S. government. Police released photos of guns allegedly found at Kims home as well as photos of Kim that appear to be scraped from social media. Las Vegas police claim they identified Kim through some DNA at the scene but wouldnt elaborate on how the DNA was collected when asked about it at the press conference. Images released by Las Vegas police showing 36-year-old Paul Kim, accused of setting fire to Tesla vehicles on March 18, 2025. Images: Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Police said at Thursdays press conference that his social media presence suggests loose affiliations with Communist ideology and sympathy for Palestinians. The latter topic is considered a hot-button issue in the U.S. as federal authorities have been kidnapping international students in recent weeks for deportation proceedings after they expressed support for Palestinians who are being killed by Israeli forces in Gaza. Over 50,000 Palestinians have died in that conflict since October 7, 2023, when Hamas killed about 1,200 Israelis in a day of terror attacks, setting off a war that has decimated Gaza.None of the images released by Las Vegas police on Thursday give a clear view of the person who was actually on the scene vandalizing property on March 18, 2025, and some of the images were extremely blurry. The image below, for instance, was released by Las Vegas police as a suspect photo on Thursday. Extremely blurry image released as a suspect photo by Las Vegas police. Image: Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Kim was apprehended without incident, according to the press conference, and police seized electronic devices as well as a black gun belt with a pouch that cops claim had pink residue on it. The spray paint used on the building was pink. The Las Vegas police were asked at the press conference if they had any concerns they may be targeted due to recent news the department was accepting a gift of free Tesla Cybertrucks from a mystery donor last month. The police said they were not worried. As promised, acts of violence and vandalism will not be tolerated, and today law enforcement personnel acted quickly to arrest an individual on charges including arson, FBI Director Kash Patel said in a statement. Under Attorney General Bondis leadership, we will continue to pursue these investigations with the full force of law and will bring to justice anyone responsible for these attacks.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By AJ Dellinger Published March 22, 2025 By Thomas Maxwell Published March 20, 2025 By Matt Novak Published March 20, 2025 By Matthew Gault Published March 20, 2025 By Thomas Maxwell Published March 19, 2025 By Matt Novak Published March 19, 2025

  • After 50 million miles, Waymos crash a lot less than human drivers
    arstechnica.com
Traffic safety After 50 million miles, Waymos crash a lot less than human drivers Waymo has been in dozens of crashes. Most were not Waymo's fault. Timothy B. Lee Mar 27, 2025 7:00 am | 59 A driverless Waymo in Los Angeles. Credit: P_Wei via Getty A driverless Waymo in Los Angeles. Credit: P_Wei via Getty Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreThe first ever fatal crash involving a fully driverless vehicle occurred in San Francisco on January 19. The driverless vehicle belonged to Waymo, but the crash was not Waymos fault.Heres what happened: A Waymo with no driver or passengers stopped for a red light. Another car stopped behind the Waymo. Then, according to Waymo, a human-driven SUV rear-ended the other vehiclesat high speed, causing a six-car pileup that killed one person and injured five others. Someones dog also died in the crash.Another major Waymo crash occurred in October in San Francisco. Once again, a driverless Waymo was stopped for a red light. According to Waymo, a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction crossed the double yellow line and crashed into an SUV that was stopped to the Waymos left. The force of the impact shoved the SUV into the Waymo. One person was seriously injured. These two incidents produced worse injuries than any other Waymo crash in the last nine months. But in other respects, they were typical Waymo crashes. Most Waymo crashes involve a Waymo vehicle scrupulously following the rules while a human driver flouts them, speeding, running red lights, careening out of their lanes, and so forth.Waymos service will only grow in the coming months and years. So Waymo will inevitably be involved in more crashesincluding some crashes that cause serious injuries and even death. But as this happens, its crucial to keep the denominator in mind. Since 2020, Waymo has reported roughly 60 crashes serious enough to trigger an airbag or cause an injury. But those crashes occurred over more than 50 million miles of driverless operations. If you randomly selected 50 million miles of human drivingthats roughly 70 lifetimes behind the wheelyou would likely see far more serious crashes than Waymo has experienced to date.Federal regulations require Waymo to report all significant crashes, whether or not the Waymo vehicle was at faultindeed, whether or not the Waymo is even moving at the time of the crash. Ive spent the last few days poring over Waymos crash reports from the last nine months. Lets dig in.Examining Waymos safety record since JulyLast September, IanalyzedWaymo crashes through June 2024. So this section will focus on crashes between July 2024 and February 2025. During that period, Waymo reported 38 crashes that were serious enough to either cause an (alleged) injury or an airbag deployment. In my view, only one of these crashes was clearly Waymos fault. Waymo may have been responsible for three other crashesthere wasnt enough information to say for certain. The remaining 34 crashes seemed to be mostly or entirely the fault of others:The two serious crashes I mentioned at the start of this article are among 16 crashes where another vehicle crashed into a stationary Waymo (or caused a multi-car pileup involving a stationary Waymo). This included 10 rear-end crashes, three side-swipe crashes, and three crashes where a vehicle coming from the opposite direction crossed the center line.Anothereight crashesinvolved another car (or in one case a bicycle) rear-ending a moving Waymo.A furtherfive crashesinvolved another vehicle veering into a Waymos right of way. This included a car running a red light, a scooter running a red light, and a car running a stop sign.Three crashesoccurred while Waymo was dropping a passenger off. The passenger opened the door and hit a passing car or bicycle. Waymo has aSafe Exit programto alert passengers and prevent this kind of crash, but its not foolproof. There were two incidents where it seems like no crash happened at all:In one incident, Waymo says that its vehicle slowed and moved slightly to the left within its lane, preparing to change lanes due to a stopped truck ahead. This apparently spooked an SUV driver in the next lane, who jerked the wheel to the left and ran into the opposite curb. Waymo says its vehicle never left its lane or made contact with the SUV.In another incident, a pedestrian walked in front of a stopped Waymo. The Waymo began moving after the pedestrian had passed, but then the pedestrian turned around and approached the Waymo AV. According to Waymo, the pedestrian may have made contact with the driver side of the Waymo AV and later claimed to have a minor injury. Waymos report stops just short of calling this pedestrian a liar.So thats a total of 34 crashes. I dont want to make categorical statements about these crashes because in most cases, I only have Waymos side of the story. But it doesnt seem like Waymo was at fault in any of them. There was one crash where Waymo clearly seemed to be at fault: In December, a Waymo in Los Angeles ran into a plastic crate, pushing it into the path of a scooter in the next lane. The scooterist hit the crate and fell down. Waymo doesnt know whether the person riding the scooter was injured.I had trouble judging the final three crashes, all of which involved another vehicle making an unprotected left turn across a Waymos lane of travel. In two of these cases, Waymo says its vehicle slammed on the brakes but couldnt stop in time to avoid a crash. In the third case, the other vehicle hit the Waymo from the side. Waymos summaries make it sound like the other car was at fault in all three cases, but I dont feel like I have enough information to make a definite judgment.Even if we assume all three of these crashes were Waymos fault, that would still mean that a large majority of the 38 serious crashes were not Waymos fault. And as well see, Waymo vehicles are involved in many fewer serious crashes than human-driven vehicles.Waymos get in fewer crashes than human driversAnother way to evaluate the safety of Waymo vehicles is by comparing their per-mile crash rate to human drivers. Waymo has been regularly publishing data about this over the last couple of years. Its most recent release came last week, when Waymo updated itssafety data hubto cover crashes through the end of 2024.Waymo knows exactly how many times its vehicles have crashed. Whats tricky is figuring out the appropriate human baseline, since human drivers dont necessarily report every crash. Waymo has tried to address this by estimating human crash rates in its two biggest marketsPhoenix and San Francisco. Waymos analysis focused on the 44 million miles Waymo had driven in these cities through December, ignoring its smaller operations in Los Angeles and Austin.Using human crash data, Waymo estimated that human drivers on the same roads would get into 78 crashes serious enough to trigger an airbag. By comparison, Waymos driverless vehicles only got into 13 airbag crashes. That represents an83 percent reductionin airbag crashes relative to typical human drivers. This is slightly worse than last September, when Waymo estimated an 84 percent reduction in airbag crashes over Waymos first 21 million miles.Over the same 44 million miles, Waymo estimates that human drivers would get into 190 crashes serious enough to cause an injury. Instead, Waymo only got in 36 injury-causing crashes across San Francisco or Phoenix. Thats an81 percent reductionin injury-causing crashes. This is a significant improvement over last September, when Waymo estimated its cars had 73 percent fewer injury-causing crashes over its first 21 million driverless miles.Insurance claims against Waymo are about 90 percent lowerThe above analysis counts all crashes, whether or not Waymos technology was at fault. Things look even better for Waymo if we focus on crashes where Waymo was determined to be responsible for a crash. To assess this, Waymoco-authored a studyin December with the insurance giant Swiss Re. It focused on crashes that led to successful insurance claims against Waymo. This data seems particularly credible because third parties, not Waymo, decide when a crash is serious enough to file an insurance claim. And claims adjusters, not Waymo, decide whether to hold Waymo responsible for a crash. But one downside is that it takes a few months for insurance claims to be filed. So the December report focused on crashes that occurred through July 2024.Waymo had completed 25 million driverless miles by July 2024. And by the end of November 2024, Waymo had faced only two potentially successful claims for bodily injury. Both claims are pending, which means they could still be resolved in Waymos favor. One of them was this crash that I described at the beginning of mySeptember articleabout Waymos safety record:On a Friday evening last November, police chased a silver sedan across the San Francisco Bay Bridge. The fleeing vehicle entered San Francisco and went careening through the citys crowded streets. At the intersection of 11th and Folsom streets, it sideswiped the fronts of two other vehicles, veered onto a sidewalk, and hit two pedestrians.According to a local news story, both pedestrians were taken to the hospital, with one suffering major injuries. The driver of the silver sedan was injured, as was a passenger in one of the other vehicles. No one was injured in the third car, a driverless Waymo robotaxi. It seems unlikely that an insurance adjuster will ultimately hold Waymo responsible for these injuries. The other pending injury claim doesnt seem like a slam dunk, either. In that case, another vehicle steered into a bike lane before crashing into a Waymo as it was making a left turn. But lets assume that both crashes are judged to be Waymos fault. That would still be a strong overall safety record.Based on insurance industry records, Waymo and Swiss Re estimate that human drivers in San Francisco and Phoenix would generate about 26 successful bodily injury claims over 25 million miles of driving. So even if both of the pending claims against Waymo succeed, two injuries represent a more than 90 percent reduction in successful injury claims relative to typical human drivers. The reduction in property damage claims is almost as dramatic. Waymos vehicles generated nine successful or pending property damage claims over its first 25 million miles. Waymo and Swiss Re estimate that human drivers in the same geographic areas would have generated 78 property damage claims. So Waymo generated 88 percent fewer property damage claims than typical human drivers.Timothy B. Lee was on staff at Ars Technica from 2017 to 2021. • US allies worldwide decry Trumps car tariffs and threaten retaliation
    www.theguardian.com
Canadas prime minister has said the era of deep ties with the US is over, as governments from Tokyo to Berlin to Paris sharply criticised Donald Trumps sweeping tariffs on car imports, with some threatening retaliatory action.Mark Carney warned Canadians that Trump had permanently altered relations and that, regardless of any future trade deals, there would be no turning back.He told reporters: The old relationship we had with the United States based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation is over. The prime minister called Trumps car tariffs unjustified, and said they were in breach of existing trade deals between the countries.Carney said he would speak to provincial premiers and business leaders on Friday to discuss a coordinated response, with retaliatory measures expected next week. Our response to these latest tariffs is to fight, is to protect, is to build, Carney said. We will fight the US tariffs with retaliatory trade actions of our own that will have maximum impact in the United States and minimum impacts here in Canada.Trump announced on Wednesday that he would impose a 25% tariff on cars and car parts shipped to the US from 3 April in a move experts have predicted is likely to depress production, drive up prices and fuel a global trade war.The US imported almost $475bn (367bn) worth of cars last year, mostly from Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Canada and Germany. European carmakers alone sold more than 750,000 vehicles to American drivers.Frances president, Emmanuel Macron, said on Thursday he had told his US counterpart that tariffs were not a good idea. They disrupt value chains, create an inflationary effect and destroy jobs. So its not good for the US or European economies, he said.Paris would work with the European Commission on a response intended to get Trump to reconsider, he said. Officials in Berlin also stressed that the commission would defend free trade as the foundation of the EUs prosperity.Donald Trump announces new 25% tariffs on cars from overseas videoGermanys chancellor, Olaf Scholz, bluntly described Trumps decision as wrong, and said Washington appeared to have chosen a path at whose end lie only losers, since tariffs and isolation hurt prosperity, for everyone.Frances finance minister, Eric Lombard, called the US presidents plan very bad news and said the EU would be forced to raise its own tariffs. His German counterpart, Robert Habeck, promised a firm EU response. We will not take this lying down, he said.Polands prime minister, Donald Tusk, said Europe would approach the US with common sense but not on our knees. Good transatlantic relations are a strategic matter and must survive more than one prime minister and one president, he said. The European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, described the move as bad for businesses, worse for consumers because tariffs are taxes. She said the bloc would continue to seek negotiated solutions while protecting its economic interests. The British prime minister, Keir Starmer, said the tariffs were very concerning and that his government would be pragmatic and clear-eyed in response. The UK does not want a trade war, but its important we keep all options on the table, he said. One option for Canada is to impose excise duties on exports of oil, potash and other commodities. Nothing is off the table to defend our workers and our country, said Carney, who added that the old economic and security relationship between Canada and the US was over.South Korea said it would put in place a full emergency response to Trumps proposed measures by April.Chinas foreign ministry said the US approach violated World Trade Organization rules and was not conducive to solving its own problems. Its spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, said: No countrys development and prosperity are achieved by imposing tariffs. The Japanese prime minister, Shigeru Ishiba, said Tokyo was putting all options on the table. Japan makes the largest amount of investment to the US, so we wonder if it makes sense for [Washington] to apply uniform tariffs to all countries, he said.Reuters and Agence-France Presse contributed to this report
