Square's Final Fantasy series is no stranger to remasters and remakes, but the next two lined up could surprise even long-time fans if one report is to be believedTech13:41, 17 Feb 2025Updated 13:41, 17 Feb 2025Final Fantasy IX is a classic, and could be getting a chance at a whole new audience(Image: Youtube)There are few series in video games with the lineage of Final Fantasy and fewer still with the conviction to keep naming new entries with ever-higher numbers. The series' last mainline new entry was Final Fantasy 16, but last year saw the second part of Final Fantasy 7's remake trilogy, Rebirth, debut to critical acclaim. We've heard rumours of other remakes (and Rebirth's director told us himself that he wants the third part out as soon as possible), and while fans have joked that one solo dev should dump his girlfriend to focus full-time on a fan remake of Final Fantasy 8, it sounds as though Final Fantasy 9 could be up next.Content cannot be displayed without consentWe'd previously heard whispers of a Final Fantasy 9 Remake being a launch title for the Switch 2, and industry leaker NateTheHate has opened up about a pair of remakes in development. The account, which previously correctly predicted the Switch 2 reveal plans, responded to a fan's question about Final Fantasy remakes, and seemingly confirmed that "both remain in active development".The two remakes that the question pertains to are the aforementioned Final Fantasy 9 Remake (which would pour cold water on it being a Switch 2 launch game if it does indeed land in 2026), while the other is the classic Final Fantasy Tactics.Final Fantasy Tactics has seen a series of re-releases, notably on PSPThe latter was a 1997 PlayStation 1 spin-off of the main Final Fantasy series, offering a more tactical slant but featuring many of the series' most iconic features, like Chocobos and job classes. It was well-received, and a PSP version dubbed The War of the Lions expanded with full voice acting (in the English version) and new items and jobs.Final Fantasy 9 is still highly regarded despite its age(Image: Youtube)Article continues belowAs for Final Fantasy 9, it marked the last mainline entry on Sony's first console, and launched in 2000. It has since come to plenty of other systems, and dropped the sci-fi angle of Final Fantasy 7 and 8 for a return to high fantasy.Would you play either the Final Fantasy Tactics or Final Fantasy 9 Remakes if/when they launch?
