While 2024 brought us a slew of poorly made AAA titles that flopped both commercially and in terms of their rating scores, there were some exceptions that did manage to win over the hearts of the gaming community but failed to translate that love into impressive player numbers, with the prime example being Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Joining its Microsoft-owned peer is Obsidians fantasy RPG Avowed, which finally launched on February 18 to positive reviews but, unfortunately for its creators, underwhelming player count.ObsidianChallenging projections that claimed Avoweds low number of concurrent users was simply due to its pre-release status, the RPG peaked at just over 17,000 players on Steam following its official launch a less-than-stellar performance given the developers pedigree.For comparison, Obsidians undeniable magnum opus, Fallout: New Vegas, had 30K concurrent players on release day in 2010 and peaked at over 51K the following weekend, while Bethesdas Skyrim the game some compared Avowed to still consistently peaks at around 35,000 players daily, coincidentally standing at the same 17K users at the moment of writing.2020s The Outer Worlds, the game Obsidian specifically highlighted as the best comparison for Avowed, showed similar results, reaching a peak of 20K players on its release date.At the same time, the game holds an impressive 81% review score on Steam, with the communitys feedback being somewhat mixed, as some reviewers praise Avoweds world, characters, writing, and combat, while others criticize the very same aspects.The general consensus seems to be that Avowed is a solid, albeit slightly overpriced, game that you can enjoy playing, but comparing it to the aforementioned RPGs would be a mistake.
