There were mass layoffs last year with 220 roles eliminated, but the most prolific termination was Christoper Barrett. The former Destiny 2 director has filed a $200 million lawsuit against Sony and Bungie for the termination, and Sony has struck back with a response full of shocking claims.Sony responds to former Destiny 2 directors $200M lawsuitFollowing their removal, former Destiny 2 and Marathon reboot director, Christopher Barrett, filed a lawsuit against Sony and Bungie in December 2024, alleging wrongful termination. In the lawsuit, Barrett claims Bungie and Sony deliberately destroyed [his] reputation by falsely, and publicly, insinuating they had investigated Barrett and found he had engaged in sexual misconduct. The lawsuit also claims the investigation was a brazen scheme from both companies to shift blame for and deflect attention from their massive business failures, as well as to avoid paying Barrett more than $45 million he was owed under his employment agreement. Now Sony has responded to the lawsuit in a 128-page filing. Sonys response claims Barrett targeted a lower-level, female employee he wasnt working with directly and progressively pushed boundaries with the employee by making subtle references to her physical appearance or expressing his interest in her romantically.Barrett was alleged to have acted inappropriately with several different female employees, and Sonys response includes nine written excerpts from text messages and DMs. One of the excerpts includes Barrett telling VICTIM 3, I hope [your boyfriend] doesnt mind I text you a lot and I just worry. Like I really enjoy texting you and talking. I dont want him to get the right idea. Ihopeyou findaperson worthy ofyour attention. He also qualified the message with, Im not hitting on you. I hope it doesnt feel like that. Im married. But I can be honest. You are in the .000001 and better be treated like that forever. When VICTIM 2 responded that her boyfriend treats her well, Barrett responded, He better [.] Cuz I would hit on you if he wasnt.Sonys response argues, Barretts predatory behaviour caused victims to seek guidance from other Bungie employees on how to manage Barretts constant boundary-pushing given that he was a long-standing, senior member of the company. Multiple victims reported to Human Resources during the investigation that they were afraid for their jobs during these encounters.Christoper Barretts lawyer respondsChristoper Barretts lawyer has responded to Sonys filing in a statement sent to Game File. The statement can be found below:Sony continues to disingenuously cherry pick text messages and alleged conversations and make unsupported and conclusory statements to defame Christopher and justify terminating him to avoid paying him what he was owed under his employment agreements. It is telling that Sony does not include the full text messages as exhibits, or the full content of these conversations, and nothing in Sonys response provides a legitimate legal or factual basis to terminate Christopher for cause.Christopher is confident that when all the evidence is presented, it will be clear that Sony engaged in a scheme to strip him of his role and the equity awards he earned for his 25 years of loyal service to the company. In the original lawsuit from Barrett, it was claimed that inappropriate behaviour was part of the workplace at Bungie. The lawsuit alleged, A very senior Bungie executive texted Barrett and others sexually suggestive material, including lewd photographs, texts about his sex life (including graphic descriptions of particular sex acts), and texts concerning the appearance of women working for Bungie. The original lawsuit also claimed, Bungie maintained an email channel that shared lewd and semi-pornographic content to the entire studio. Those images were occasionally shared on a projector at studio events. In response to the above accusations of inappropriate behaviour within Bungie, Sonys filing briefly says, Defendants lack knowledge or information sufficient to form a belief as to the truth of the allegations.Lastly, Barretts overall argument is that Sony could not have legitimately fired him for cause unless he had committed specific prohibited acts such as engage in any financial improprieties or have or solicit any improper sexual relationships with his colleagues. To this, Sonys filing states, Defendants vehemently deny the allegation that Barrett did not engage in any conduct that could be the basis for a finding of Cause. For more Destiny 2, players are gettingunreleased weaponsno one is supposed to get yet, and leaks have revealed an 80% damage buff perk and weaponpre-order bonuspresumably for Apollo.Destiny 2Platform(s):Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Web, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/XGenre(s):Action, Adventure, First Person, Massively Multiplayer, Shooter8VideoGamerRelated TopicsDestiny 2 Subscribe to our newsletters!By subscribing, you agree to our Privacy Policy and may receive occasional deal communications; you can unsubscribe anytime.Share
