PlayStation 5 Pro review: Months later and the PS5 Pro is much easier to recommend

The PS5 Pro is much easier to recommend than it was a few months ago, and it might be worth investing as Sony continues to improve older titles.Tech17:00, 22 Feb 2025PS5 Pro is the most powerful console around, and now it feels like itBack in November, I went hands-on with the PlayStation 5 Pro, Sony's mid-generation refresh of its already-impressive console. We didn't get a console from Sony so I spent a whopping 699 in the name of putting it through its paces. Sadly (both for me, and my bank balance), I felt a little disappointed. The console was great, with double the storage of the base model, and more power thanks to a sizeable GPU bump. But there wasn't anything I could play on it that felt particularly transformative in the same way it felt to boot up Marvel's Spider-Man on the PS4 Pro when that launched. So, what's changed in the last few months? Actually, enough to make the console much, much easier to recommend. Let's unpack.Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is a true showcase of the PS5 Pro(Image: Warhorse Studios)One of my main issues when I tested the PS5 Pro last year was its frankly odd supported games list.Sony went to great lengths in the console's reveal to show off The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. It's a gorgeous game, yes, but it also launched in 2020. Then, more recent games like Star Wars Jedi Survivor actually saw worse performance on PS5 Pro.The bad news is that there's still no unified standard of PS5 Pro graphical setting in each game's menu, but those teething issues appear to have been worked out for the most part. Then there are new releases which have PS5 Pro patches included right off the bat. Monster Hunter Wilds will launch with one, while GTA 6 is expected to perform best on PS5 Pro if Rockstar can work their magic.Kingdom Come Deliverance II, one of the early front-runners for Game of the Year, is a great experience on PS5 Pro (that's where we reviewed it), while Path of Exile 2's Early Access version is enhanced, too.Helldivers 2 was a huge success for Sony(Image: Arrowhead Game Studios/PlayStation Publishing LLC)With titles like Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater and even Microsoft's own DOOM: The Dark Ages expected to arrive with PS5 Pro functionality, plus huge franchises like Assassin's Creed: Shadows, there's been a huge adoption of the new console's features already.Perhaps just as important is Sony's willingness to go back over its catalog and improve games to make it an easier upgrade option. Just this week, Astro Bot and Helldivers 2, the company's biggest hits of 2024, got PS5 Pro updates. The point is, although some games won't be making the jump (Cyberpunk 2077 felt like a prime candidate), we're a long way from Fortnite being one of the best reasons to upgrade.Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is one of the best-looking games on PS5 Pro(Image: Square Enix Creative)The PS5 Pro is still a very expensive console. 699 is a huge sum whichever way you slice it, but we are at least starting to see smaller discounts of 50 - 60.Is it enough to justify it? No, but it means if you're new to the PlayStation ecosystem you can jump in for the same price as before and at least have enough for a digital game. I'm still not convinced ditching the disc drive was the way to go, though. I don't have any physical games, save for a couple of Collector's Editions, but I feel the value proposition would have been an easier sell if players of launch model PS5s didn't feel like they were losing something for 699 and the stand could definitely have been thrown in the box, Sony.Xbox is being outsold by PS5 already(Image: AFP via Getty Images)Still, I'm convinced the PS5 Pro is about to come into its own. Not only for those games we mentioned earlier, but by offering something Microsoft once took great pleasure in providing the most powerful console. With Xbox seemingly focused on the next generation of consoles, PlayStation 5 Pro essentially runs unopposed. Sure, the PS5 might be fractionally less powerful than the Series X (at least on paper), but the PS5 Pro has that top spot locked in and probably will do for some time yet.Article continues belowOn a personal level, it means that the majority of gaming reviews you read on this very site will have a "reviewed on PS5 Pro" affixed to the bottom, and that's something that people notice. No console should cost 699, but with that caveat, there's no better home console around right now than the PlayStation 5 Pro. Its technical chops will likely become more apparent in the coming months and years, but it's finally easy to recommend. For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.
