It appears the string of big-budget game failures in 2024 has instilled caution in AAA game studios, with more and more titles being canceled before even being officially announced. The latest example comes from Wizards of the Coasts development team Skeleton Key, whose upcoming game has reportedly been shut down, according to the studios Audio Director, Nassim Ait-Kaci.Skeleton KeyFounded in 2022, Skeleton Key was said to be focused on developing AAA games with immersive gameplay, unique stories, and thought-provoking moments of suspense and horror. Leading Skeleton Key as its Studio Head is Christian Dailey, who previously worked at BioWare as the executive producer for the Dragon Age franchise and held leadership roles at companies like EA and Blizzard. I am excited to be starting this new adventure with the company that has created so many of my favorite toys and games growing up, Dailey said at the time of the studios launch.Unfortunately, it now seems that the promised adventure halted without ever exiting the starting location. As said by Ait-Kaci in his recent LinkedIn post, first spotted by Timur222, Skeleton Keys in-progress game has been officially discontinued, with him and other developers facing the same misfortune.At this time, Skeleton Keys Audio Director appears to be the only person to publicly comment on the games cancellation. The only other indication supporting Ait-Kacis claim is that Skeleton Keys careers page shows a total of zero open positions not definitive proof of the projects demise, but still unusual for a AAA game in its earliest stages of development. 80 Level has reached out to other team members to gather more details on the projects current status, the reasons behind its alleged shutdown, and WotCs plans for Skeleton Key going forward.Interestingly, the news arrives less than a month after rumors of Corinne Busche, the Game Director behind Dragon Age: The Veilguard a game whose financial underperformance led to massive layoffs at BioWare joining the team.
