Invincible, the hit comic series and hit Amazon Prime animated series, is getting its own official TTRPG setting, courtesy of the award-winning game designers at Free League Publishing.Partnering with Skybound Entertainment, D&D Beyond founder Adam Bradford (who has also worked as a producer on titles in the modern Dungeons & Dragons, Marvel, and Cortex Prime tabletop role-playing systems) and Free League co-founder Tomas Hrenstam (Alien RPG, Blade Runner RPG) will bring the darkly superheroic world of writer Robert Kirkman and artists Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley to the Year Zero Engine. One of my very first tabletop roleplaying games was the old Marvel Superheroes by TSR, Hrenstam said in Free League and Skybounds news release, and making a superhero RPG has been a lifelong dream. I think the genre, and Invincibles more grounded and visceral take on it, is a great fit for the Year Zero Engine game mechanics. Those mechanics will include balancing everyday life with the demands of being a superhero, Bradford told Polygon via email. Mark Grayson juggles school, homework, and personal relationships while also mastering his powers and facing off against super-villains (sometimes even his own father). This tension between the mundane and the extraordinary continues to shape the story as his duties and relationships evolve. With Invincible Superhero Roleplaying, there are two main types of scenes action and social. Action scenes capture the thrill of battling super-villains, but I love that social scenes provide important narrative downtime between those clashes where the relationships and responsibilities that make the characters more than just superheroes come to life. Social scenes are mechanically important too, as they allow characters to recover their Health and Resolve.Invincible Superhero Roleplaying will launch on Kickstarter later this year, in an edition that includes a core rulebook and starter set featuring art from Invincible artists Walker and Ottley. The Invincible comic book series has amazing art [] and being able to use that in our RPG is a great privilege, Hrenstam told Polygon. That said, we will be adding some new art as well.Free League is keeping mum on exactly when that Kickstarter will kick off, but interested players and GMs can sign up on the campaigns pre-launch page to get notified whenever that changes.[Invincible] contains everything we love about [superhero] stories, Bradford told Polygon, though often with surprising twists that subvert familiar tropes. In Invincible, anything can exist, and anything can be turned on its head. Since the comic has a clear beginning, middle, and end, the narrative has a natural momentum thats ideal for a tabletop campaign. In the same spirit, players can collaborate to create their own epic stories with this game.
