SighWarner Bros exec reportedly cites need to regain our credibility and swagger at producing great games, as company shutters Shadow of Mordor studio and cancels Wonder WomanPlayer First Games and Warner Bros. Games San Diego were also closed as part of the "strategic change in direction".Image credit: Monolith Productions News by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on Feb. 26, 2025 Warner Bros. has confirmed that it's cancelled the Wonder Woman game that'd long been in the works at Shadow of Mordor developer Monolith Productions. As had sadly become a norm for the the games industry in 2025, that news has come alongside the closure of Monolith and two other studios under the WB Games umbrella - Multiversus dev Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. These moves, first reported by Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, have since been confirmed by Warner itself in a statement provided to Polygon. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. "We have had to make some very difficult decisions to structure our development studios and investments around building the best games possible with our key franchises Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC and Game of Thrones," a spokesperson for the company said, "After careful consideration, we are closing three of our development studios Monolith Productions, Player First Games and Warner Bros. Games San Diego. This is a strategic change in direction and not a reflection of these teams or the talent that consists within them."They added regarding the cancellation of Wonder Woman, which a previous Bloomberg report had noted was "struggling to coalesce", that the "hope was to give players and fans the highest quality experience possible for the iconic character, and unfortunately this is no longer possible within our strategic priorities".Polygon has also shared sections of an email JB Perrette - Warner Bros. Discovery's CEO and president of global streaming and games - reportedly sent to staff about these closures and the cancellation. The exec wrote that recent releases not doing as well as WB Games had hoped has led the company to decide to refocus on fewer but bigger franchises going forwards, as it aims to "regain our credibility and swagger at producing great games"."Getting our swagger back happens one high quality game release at a time, and our financial credibility gets rebuilt one fiscal quarter at a time," Perrette added, "delivering what we said we would deliver, and no big negative surprises."As of writing, it's unclear exactly how many jobs have been impacted by the closures. Perrette noted that WB hopes to "repurpose our talent where possible", but a number of ex-Monolith staffers - including systemic narrative designer Nathan Savant and UX design director Mila Pavlin - have posted on BlueSky that they're now looking for work following the closure.
