New Museum officials have announced a completion date for its expansion by OMA: Fall 2025. The opening will coincide with an inaugural exhibition stocked with works by more than 150 artists. There will also be myriad site-specific installations on view that respond to the expansions architecture, including an artwork by Sarah Lucas, titled VENUS VICTORIA. Shohei Shigematsu and Rem Koolhaas are the project leads at OMA, in collaboration with Cooper Robertson. OMA first shared renderings of the project in 2019. New Museum has since raised $118 million as part of its capital campaign to earn a total $125 million for the projects completion.Construction costs are estimated to be $82 million. Philanthropist and longtime New Museum trustee Toby Devan Lewis, who died in 2022, donated a substantial amount of money to support the project, so the addition will be named after her.A mesh material adds texture to the additions atrium staircase and ceiling. NEW INC will have a new home inside the addition, among other features. The New Museum is an incubator for new cultural perspectives and production, and the expansion aims to embody that attitude of openness, OMA partner Shohei Shigematsu said in a statement.A forum space inside the expansion can be used for hosting talks and other event programming. (Courtesy OMA/bloomimages.de)Imagined as a highly connected yet distinct counterpart to the existing museums verticality and solidity, the new building will offer horizontally expansive galleries for curatorial variety, open vertical circulation, and a diversity of spaces for gathering, exchange, and creation, Shigematsu continued. The building is further shaped to create an active public faceincluding an outdoor plaza at the ground, moments of transparency throughout the central atrium, and terraced openings at the topthat will openly engage the surrounding community and beyond.
