Ive always had a soft corner for G-Shock watches, probably because my first wristwatch was a G-Shock. I still remember showing it off to my classmates by repeatedly throwing it at the wall, just to affirm its durability. You might believe I was crazy, but at that time it was cool. That toughness associated with the watch has left a lasting impression on me, even though my allegiance to watches has since grown toward the elegance of an Omega.Roll back to the present. G-Shock watches still have that chunky appearance and durability each one of us can swear by. Most of the designs however are pretty similar to each other, and its tough at times to tell one from the other by their mere appearance. As an uncanny twist to the commonplace designs by the Japanese watchmaker, G-Shock GA-V01 lands online on the company website in China. It is not just different in material and color, but drastically distinct with the design as well.Designer: G-ShockThe first thing you will notice on the GA-V01 is its interestingly different display. The LCD display has a peculiar cartoon-like conjoined eyes shape, which the company refers to as CoolEyes, where the two subdials are placed. Next, your eyes can not help but notice the resin case with an integrated rubber strap, which instantly transports you to the 90s nostalgia. On the design quirks, the third noticeable thing is the GA-V01s dials hour markers. The 3D hour markers here appear outside the watchs mineral glass, instead of being within.Other than these apparent differences, the GA-V01 is pretty much the same as any traditional G-Shock. The watch is however on the beefier and larger side of the spectrum. It weighs 74 grams and measures 58.2 mm wide and 19.6 mm thick. Its cartoonish from how it appears but G-Shock has ensured it is no childs play as the watch has a miraculously long ten-year battery life. Yes, traditionally a G-Shock model battery life would hover around the three-year mark, but this is excitingly long for complete peace of mind for a decade.That said, the innards of the G-Shock GA-V01 are tried and tested and the features are functionally similar, starting with a backlight LCD display, World Timer function with 48 cities, 5 alarms, 1/100-second stopwatch, 12/24-hour format, and countdown timer. As obvious the G-Shock GA-V01 is shockproof, water-resistant to 200 meters and has a durable, lightweight resin case.The G-Shock GA-V01 is available through the company website for a price ranging between 990 and 1,090 RMB (approximately $137 $150). Its currently only available in China but we are presuming it will definitely hit the global markets very soon.
