Check Out These Beautiful Hand-Painted Backgrounds For D&D-Inspired RPG

Back in December, we featured Esoteric Ebb, a Unity-powered single-player RPG inspired by TTRPG mechanics and infused with Disco Elysium-like vibes. The game boasts a unique art style, featuring a striking color palette, which you can fully appreciate in these backgrounds shared by developer Christoffer Bodegrd. As he explained, these were created using standard texturing techniques but viewed from a fixed perspective. Basically, there are 3D models that are UV-mapped from the same perspective as the camera setup in Unity. A large texture, ranging from 4K to 8K or even 16K, depending on the areas size, is then applied on top of the models.Initially, Christoffer aimed for something more complex and technical, similar to the old isometric pre-rendered games, but couldnt quite figure it out. However, this approach ended up working out wonderfully. As for the framerate, the developer mentioned that hes constantly concerned about meeting framerate targets but has been pleasantly surprised by how well the game performs, running at a steady 60 FPS on the Steam Deck.Have a look at some recent gameplay demos below:In Esoteric Ebb, you play as The Cleric, an expert in esoteric matters and a high-ranking government enforcer. Uncover a political conspiracy with your goblin sidekick, roll dice in intense encounters, rise to become a legendary cleric, or completely ruin the campaign. Inspired by classic tabletop games, Esoteric Ebb features deep and branching dialogs with a staggering amount of choices.Follow Christoffer Bodegrd on X/Twitter for all the latest updates, and add Esoteric Ebb to your wishlist here.
