This Counter-Strike 2 Tarp Has 100K PolygonsSometimes game developers make decisions that baffle players and other creators. Counter-Strike 2 is one of the latest targets of people's eagle eyes. Valve fan and CS2 content creator @gabefollower noticed a peculiar detail on the new Cache map: a tarp that looks simple enough but actually has 100,000 polygons a bizarre view and quite unnecessary since more polygons usually means worse performance. However, some X/Twitter users pointed out that this is tessellation and not Valve's attempt at wasting time on complicated shapes."Tessellation is a method of breaking down polygons into finer pieces. In DirectX, tessellation is a technique that allows you to generate primitives (triangles, lines, points, and such) on the graphics card. Specifically, it lets you repeatedly subdivide the current geometry into a finer mesh. This allows you to load a relatively coarse mesh on your graphics card, generate more vertices and triangles dynamically and then have a mesh on the screen that looks much smoother."This is far from the first time we see a simple form containing tons of parts. Do you remember the mesh topology of Pyramid Head's helmet from Silent Hill 2 Remake? And the toothbrush with over 5,000 faces in Yandere Simulator? What's next? We'll find that the iconic low-poly grapes from Final Fantasy 14 secretly have more geometry than everything else in the game?
