Nintendo Switch 2 New Patent Indicates OS-Level Integration for Voice Chat

While details on Nintendos upcoming console, the Switch 2, are still scarce, a new patent suggests that the company might include online voice chat as a native feature on the console. Spotted by WCCFTech, the patent was published last month, and describes a system for OS voice chat integration.Among the concepts described in the patent application is also the addition of proximity-based voice chat. This would involve being able to communicate online with players depending on how close your character is to theirs in the games world. This would mean that players that are further away would be less audible than close-by players. A similar system can be seen in several multiplayer titles, such as battle royale games like PUBG: Battlegrounds. The OS-level integration of voice chat would also indicate that online voice communication for Nintendo Switch 2 players will not be dependent on a smartphone app. For context, the original Switch does not have its own voice chat system. Players have to make use of the official Nintendo Switch Online app to be able to communicate with friends playing, for example, Splatoon 3 together. The patent might also be a hint about the purpose of the new C button that has been spotted on pictures of the Switch 2s new JoyCon controllers. The button could be easily used for push-to-talk purposes, allowing players to use a microphone that is potentially built right into the JoyCons for communication. While Nintendo had unveiled the Switch 2 back in January, the company hasnt yet revealed any information about the console. Details about the Switch 2 have been reserved for a Direct showcase slated for April 2 at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET. During this event, Nintendo is expected to showcase some of the hardware features of the console, alongside maybe a few games, as well as the launch date and price. We do know that the Nintendo Switch 2 will feature a larger display, along with bigger JoyCon controllers to go with it. The console will also feature a new aesthetic style, making use of the Switchs iconic red and blue colours for the new systems accents.Nintendo has also confirmed that the Switch 2 will be fully backwards compatible with the original Switch. This includes not only games purchased digitally through the eShop, but also physical copies of games. In the meantime, analysts have predicted that the Switch 2 will be priced at around $399. This price point was chosen so that Nintendo doesnt end up alienating fans of the original Switch. According to SuperData Research co-founder Joost van Dreunen, the price tag represents a critical psychological threshold that balances premium hardware aspirations against mainstream market accessibility. While Nintendo hasnt yet confirmed any new games for the Switch 2, the company did tease that a new Mario Kart title would be coming to the new console. Rumours have indicated that a host of third-party games were being developed for the Switch 2, including Fable, Forza Horizon 5, Diablo 4, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. For more details, here are 15 games rumoured to be in development for the Switch 2.
