The project, for Liverpool City Council, would improve pedestrian access between Upper Pitt Street, Nelson Street and Great Georges Square. It would also create a new children's play area and a commemorative memorial garden. At the centre of the scheme will be two stone lions which formerly sat outside the Chinese consulate in Manchester. Near the lions would sit a red maple wishing tree and flower mat.Liverpool City Council's cabinet member for economy and growth Nick Small said the consultation would help create something that is really special.AdvertisementHe added: We are hugely proud of the citys Chinatown, which is the oldest in Europe and has huge potential. We want to revitalise it so it is somewhere that the local community and Liverpool residents are equally proud of, as well as being somewhere tourists can spend time.Great George's Square is part of a number of ongoing projects in the Baltic Triangle area of Liverpool, including 96 million proposals for a new Baltic Station, designed by Liverpool-based practice Owen Ellis Architects and engineer Mott Macdonald. The station is due to open in 2027, subject to planning.Completion of the Great Georges Square scheme is expected in early 2026, subject to planning.Current site view
