Were now over 50 days into President Trumps second term, which has brought rapid changes to the operations of the federal government. These shifts have broad impacts for architects, landscape architects, engineers, and others who are at work improving the built environment. So far, environmental regulations have been slashed; USAID has been gutted; staff layoffs are widespread at the Department of Education and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD); and the GSA has been asked to offload hundreds of federal properties. As seen with the recent defunding of Columbia University and ICEs detention of Mahmoud Khalil, freedom of speech and academic integrity is also under threat. The Guardian recently reported that the U.S. is now on the Civicus Monitor Watchlist, which means the organization believes the country is currently experiencing a rapid decline in civic freedoms. On the flip side, there is some encouragement for domestic self-sufficiency. In a recent executive order, Trump sought to stimulate the timber industry, and some, like Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) and the National Association of Home Builders, welcome the clarification of the definition of the waters of the United States, among other environmental deregulations. Last month, ABC also celebrated the decision to restore merit-based competition for infrastructure contracts to build land port of entry projects procured by the GSA. The impact of steel and aluminum tariffs on construction has yet to be seen, and early news is mixed: According to New Hampshire Public Radio, steel tariffs could boost some local manufacturers but increase prices and hurt sales for others.Whats Happening in Your Workplace?
