Fans of Magic The Gathering had been concerned that Wizards of the Coast would move away from the game's own lore in favour of Universes Beyond, but it appears that's not the caseTech10:48, 17 Mar 2025Updated 10:51, 17 Mar 2025The concept art for Aetherdrift looks phenomenal(Image: Florian De Gesincourt)Magic The Gathering has been going for decades at this point, but has inarguably gained more of a mindshare in recent years thanks to its 'Universes Beyond' crossovers. These have brought dozens of franchises into the card game, including Doctor Who, Assassin's Creed, Fallout, and even some Fortnite cards.Article continues belowThat shift has fans feeling a little concerned that Magic would be leaning more into Universes Beyond than its own established lore and characters, but Mark Rosewater, the game's head designer, has shot down that idea in a recent update to his Q&A blog. Here's what Rosewater had to say.Cloud and Sephiroth can do battle in cardboard forms(Image: Wizards of the Coast/Square Enix)Posting on his blog, where he often responds to game design queries, Rosewater was asked by a fan about the response to the game's most recent in-universe sets (colloquially referred to as 'Universes Within')."Not to be a Negative Nelly but most Universes Within sets have been received as average at best (save for Bloomburrow) while all the Universes Beyond have sold like hotcakes. If this trend continues do you see a world where Universes Within are scrapped entirely?"If you were panicking that Magic's own Multiverse would be sacrificed at the altar of borrowing other IP, Rosewater has good news."The last four in-Multiverse sets (Bloomburrow, Duskmourn, Foundations, and Aetherdrift) all did well.""And Outlaws of Thunder Junction looks like its going to end up in spitting distance of expectations. Only Murders at Karlov Manor did poorly.""So, no. I do not expect us to scrap in-Multiverse sets."Article continues belowWe previewed Aetherdrift ahead of launch and said we expect it to be a fun set, and we're excited for the next set, Tarkir Dragonstorm. For more on Magic The Gathering, the Final Fantasy set got a full reveal last month, with Spider-Man cards being shown not long after, while the door is open for more Square Enix partnerships. For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.
