When Saw X hit theaters in 2023, it was actually a refreshing departure for the James Wan and Leigh Whannell-created series: rather than propelling things forward, it was an interquel set between the first two films. That gave it a chance to explore Saws most compelling character: Tobin Bells John Kramer, who is dead in the franchises current continuity. It earned critical praise and was a box-office hit. But now it seems that wasnt enough to invigorate the 21-year-old horror series, because the planned Saw XI is allegedly not moving forward. Bloody Disgusting got the scoop, reporting that a source told it Saw XI is totally dead and has been for almost a year. This is surprising, considering that whileSaw XI did see its planned release date moveit was most recently set for September 2025Bell had spoken about it in interviews as recently as late last year, telling the LA Times he was excited to explore more of John Kramers world. Part 11 was also supposed to bring back director Kevin Greutert, who helmed the well-received Saw Xas well as earlier entries Saw VI and seventh series entry Saw 3D. According to Bloody Disgustings unnamed source, Everything went sideways in January 2024 the producers started fighting and [Lionsgate] didnt have anyone to smooth over the disagreement. Bloody Disgusting also discovered that theres a chance the franchise might find new life at a different studio, but the outlets source thinks it wont pick up where the story left off, but rather start over. A reboot, in other words, rather than any more sequels. io9 has reached out to Lionsgate for confirmation or comment, and will update this story should we hear back. Want more io9 news?
