While the games story was lacking and it will chock-full of bugs, fans fell in love with its expansive map that excels in environmental storytelling. However, early in development, Bethesda didnt want to invest in a massive map for the first Fallout MMO. Eventually, the team was given the go ahead to make a map four times bigger than Fallout 4, but that wasnt alwaysFallout 76 almost had a smaller mapSpeaking at the 2025 Games Developer Conference, via GamesRadar, Fallout 76 lead artist Nate Purkeypile explained that they had to personally fight for the map to be bigger than Skyrim. In an attempt to create the epic scope of the Virginian wilderness, the artist had to battle to create the map they wanted.Fallout 76s map was huge; its actually even bigger than Skyrim, and that was something I had to fight for really hard from the start, the artist said. I knew it was a game people were going to be spending a lot of time in, and I wanted to capture that epic feel of the West Virginia wilderness.Despite the games poor launch shooting harsh criticisms towards individual developers, years of updates has massively improved Fallout 76. However, Purkeypile explains that he still received compliments for the games brilliant map even when everyone was complaining about everything else about the game.Even though the game had a rocky launch, people liked the map, they said. It was kind of nice to hear hey, that game sucks, but the maps pretty cool.
