For a certain type of anime fan (i.e., ones with exceptionally good taste), Nichijou is considered one of the best examples of slapstick comedy the medium has to offer. Based on Keiichi Arawis manga, the slice-of-life comedy anime quickly asserted itself as one of the best series of the 2010s back in 2011, thanks in no small part to its deadpan humor, outlandish and memorable characters, and jaw-dropping, over-the-top animation.We may not be getting a sequel, but we are getting something just as good, if not better: an anime based on Arawis ongoing comedy mangaCity. Even better news: Its being produced by none other than Kyoto Animation (or KyoAni, as their fans so lovingly refer to them), the studio behindNichijou. The series is coming out this July, and the trailer revealed during last weekends AnimeJapan 2025 event is just as gobsmackingly gorgeous as youd expect and hope for.Like Nichijou, City is a slice-of-life surreal comedy that follows an ensemble cast of quirky and eclectic characters navigating the pitfalls and absurdities of everyday life. The series will center on a trio of university classmates who work odd jobs, study for classes, and go on all kinds of wild misadventures that will no doubt quickly escalate into even more absurd shenanigans.Taichi Ishidate (Violet Evergarden) will serve as the director of City the Animation, while Tamami Tokuyama (Sound! Euphonium, Liz and the Blue Bird) is credited as both character designer and chief animation director on the series. Shiori Yamazaki (Violet Evergarden: The Movie) is the series art director, Kana Miyata (Nichijou) serves as color designer, and Hiroki Ueda (K-On!, Nichijou) will serve as the director of photography on City the Animation.City the Animation will premiere on July 6. No U.S. streaming platform has been announced yet.
