Vin Diesel loves his Instagram. He really does. On any given morning, hell type out a nice long message to his 100-plus million followers and just say some wild shit. Like theres a Groot movie coming. Or, hes been asked to direct a Fast and Furious short film as a prequel to the 11th and final Fast and Furious movie. That second one happened Wednesday and holds a bit more weight to it. You see, back in 2009, Diesel directed Los Bandoleros, a canon short film set before the events of the fourth film, Fast and Furious. Its actually pretty good! And now, according to Diesel, hes doing a similar thing in the run-up to Fast Eleven aka Fast X Part 2. I am reminded of that critical moment in the Fast franchise, where we had just wrapped the fourth film, Diesel wrote. The studio asked me to direct the precursor to the film, to explain where Dom had been in between the first and the fourth film. It was called Los Bandoleros. Now, all these years later, the request has come in again for me to direct the precursor, to the finale. Heres the post. He goes on to hint that its going to be filmed in a very exotic location, such as a desert, but wait a minute. When last we saw Diesels character, Dominic Toretto, he was at the bottom of a dam, about to be killed. Is this film going to show how Dom got out of that jam and ran away into the desert? Could it be about his friends Roman, Tej, Han, and Ramsey, who were just shot down in a plane, and how they got back to civilization? Would an 11th installment really just skip this kind of crucial narrative cohesion for a YouTube short film? Also, when the heck is this 11th film coming? Is this film just a way to stall so the team can put together a coherent, good script this time? io9 has reached out to Universal for some type of comment or clarification and will update this piece if and when we hear back.Its the Fast and Furious franchiseso of course, anything is possible. Maybe its a Gal Gadot short explaining how Gisele returns. Or Dwayne Johnsons character, Hobbs, sunbathing for 20 minutes. We dont know. But, it is sure fun to speculate and to just kind of laugh at the delightful absurdity of it all.
