Alongside unique additions like Joy-Con mouse support and an awesome new GameChat feature, Nintendos more sinister additions were keenly avoided.Following the Direct, a new form of Nintendo Switch 2 cartridge was revealed: the Game-Key Card. Instead, the game-key card is your key to downloading the full game to your system via the internet.Every Switch 2 game that releases in Game-key card form will have a small notice at the bottom of the case. This notice reads full game download via internet required.Essentially, every Nintendo Switch 2 Game-key Card is a license instead of an actual game. Developers that dont want to shell out for the price of a game cartridge that has enough storage can instead keep their costs down by making users download the game themselves.Similar to the original Xbox One plan for physical games, the license can seemingly be transferred between users, although thats not confirmed. Current Switch games that release without a cartridge typically come with a game key that is instantly tied to a user account. With this in mind, the Game Key Card system isnt a terrible compromise, but its still a terrible choice for longevity. Its a double-edged sword as, for the life cycle of the console, you do get something that sounds like it can be resold and transferred. However, as soon as Nintendo turns off the consoles servers in the future, players wont be able to download their games.Subscribe to our newsletters!By subscribing, you agree to our Privacy Policy and may receive occasional deal communications; you can unsubscribe anytime.Share
