Has Nintendo become arrogant?

But Mario Kart World, the sequel to the best-selling Switch game (and maybe best-selling Nintendo game of all time?) being priced $10 above the standard is absolutely arrogant.BigjigMemberJun 4, 20181,342The paid tech demo I'll give you, everything else is Nintendo doing what literally every other player in the game industry is doingPlinkertonMemberNov 4, 20177,315Oh god the terrible takes have begun...Nintendo is a corporation; don't apply human emotions to them. The SilverMemberOct 28, 201711,384It's too early for the arrogant part of the cycle, Nintendo truly blazing their own trail.MadaoAvalanche's One Winged SlayerMemberOct 26, 20175,453Panamathey were already arrogant once the Switch 1 saw success. what else would you call a console that never saw price drops in 8 years?you'll only see good deals and price drops when there's failures like the Wii U.pbayneCorrupted by VengeanceMemberOct 27, 201710,919what tech company is "humble" or how are they arrogant?MafroMemberOct 25, 20179,029 ConflictResolverMemberJan 1, 20243,839MidgarI think they are going to be in for a rude awakening for how the market reacts to the game prices.Console price is ok, I'll give them that.matrix-catMemberOct 27, 201710,345Textbook case of Arrogant NintendoGlasfrutAvengerOct 27, 20174,750I think Nintendo has always been...pragmatic and...principled. To a fault. The hardware pricing reflects the current reality of the world. The game pricing is...them perhaps not wanting to go for GaaS as a way to make up for increased costs/budgets?I just wonder if they'll be open to discounting games more often from here on.I would definitely call Sony arrogant if they pulled the same move so then...yes...Nintendo is arrogant? I don't know Hero ProtagonistMemberSep 26, 2024832Nintendo produces billion dollar Hollywood movies and builds theme park attractions now they have built themselves into a world renowned brand. Like with Disney, people are expected to pay more for such premium productsJooMemberMay 25, 20184,397This kind of thing about "arrogant business" like it's a thing with feelings always feels like a thought process of a ten-year-old (sorry if you are one). It's always annoying when the prices increase, but Nintendo (like any other business) will try to push the limits and folks just have to vote on their wallets. There's not much to do if the increased prices don't affect their sales other than not to buy them yourself. Also there's several reasons why the costs of electronics has gone way up and gaming business in general is also in a bit of a turbulence.OdinsmanaMemberMar 13, 20193,507Did they ever stop being arrogant? Nintendo has always been the Apple of gaming when it comes to business.Knight613MemberOct 25, 201723,800San FranciscoIt's honestly probably less about arrogance and more about a similar mentality that Sony had (maybe still has?) back when they were doing cross gen upgrades and stuff.Basically they put in X amount of resources into doing them and so they believe they can charge for them.Which I guess is fair and realistically the only reason Microsoft didn't charge for those upgrades are because they needed to try to gain ground with good will gestures somehow.I cannot really begin to defend $80 games though. I assume it's because game cards using MicroSD Express is expensive compared to normal MicroSD stuff the Switch used. Basically N64'd themselves there.MeltedDreamsMemberOct 27, 20179,275I just saw this. Genuinely laughable. The price of the console makes sense given it's a much more capable relative to Switch 1. For Switch 1, Nintendo got an absurdly good deal on the Tegra. Much more ram, more storage etc.The one thing that is clear to me is that they are sitting on a lot of unannounced software. If Prime 4 was an exclusive I think the overall feeling towards yesterday would be very different. GreywarenMemberJul 16, 201912,543SpainNintendo has been arrogant for quite a while. As much as I love their games, they're one of the greediest companies out there.JoeshabadooMemberJan 3, 20191,655Need an option for 'yea a little'.They're still doing weird shit and experimenting and not taking themselves too seriously, plus their games continue to look like straight fire buuuuut the economics are indeed troubling and only marginally BARELY easier to swallow if we were to learn that their internal developers were among the best compensated in the industry.Still, fuck off with $80 gamesblueredandgoldMemberOct 25, 20178,203I'm not necessarily agreeing or disagreeing with anybody but I've always chucked when the "corporations aren't your friend" chestnut always seems to be forgotten when we want ascribe these sorts of personality traits to any sort of organisation. No they aren't your friend, but then it would also seem they're a friend who has wronged you in some way egregiously awful and personal way.Every time.moqzMemberJan 28, 2025303Agni Kai said:I sometimes feel we give videogame companies the benefit of the doubt way more often than we do with other companies.Fuck them all.Click to expand...Click to shrink...Idk why anyone would give any company out there the benefit of the doubt. Give it some time and a new 3D Mario, and I'll probably get the Switch 2 for the same reasons I got a Switch 1. It isn't really going to get much use though for non exclusive 3rd party gamesLast edited: Today at 4:25 AMCamisadoMemberNov 3, 20171,549Vormund said:That Welcome tour demo should be pre installed. I was on a call when it was announced, and jokingly said "Oh, I see they really liked Astro's playroom then" and then they announced it was paid I changed my tune to "Oh sorry, I mean Astrobot"Dumb joke I know, but it's wild to me that something that is designed to show you what your new fancy purchase can do isn't a free pre-install.PoimandresMemberOct 26, 20177,744Arrogant I don't think so. Just stingy, which they have been for a long time.LAAOne Winged SlayerMemberOct 28, 20173,019Always has been to a degree.Tbh, the game prices to me seem in part due to the increased read speed on the carts, so I don't see it as they're doing it solely because they think they can get away with it. The digital prices I guess counter that though that they are still raised, though not as much as physical. The Switch 2 Edition prices to be are more showing of their arrogance to me, I've seen better upgrades for similar prices, on the visual/performance side, a lot of these Editions are things I'd have expected to be free. Same with their welcome tour paid tech demo too ha. It doesn't even seem on the level of the built in Astro bot, so don't know what they were thinking there. cw_sasukeMemberOct 27, 201729,327They run their business differently compared to other companies, so they will usually be more open with the upfront costs. Meanwhile others might hide the production costs behind lower initial prices only to drop the micro transaction Hammer or you realize later that the development team was killed because the budget can't be recouped. It's really no rocket science, they charge what they think they have to be for their business to be viable. Either you are on board or you aren't, there are plenty other alternatives out there in terms of gaming. The Direct yesterday was a mess imo, but at least they weren't sugar coating how the game look and perform like right now and didn't sugar coat the pricing for this stuff. Even if it bad for people, at least the information is there to make decisions.Personally I also think they still have quite a bit to unveil when it comes to the content their are offering. I think after Treehouse we will know more, especially if we might see more recent builds of the games.Dogo MojoMemberOct 27, 20172,426Corporations are not your friends, even if they make your favorite toys.DanielsanMemberOct 26, 20176,855The NetherlandsThey've always been arrogant, but now more than ever. I mean, during the Switch era they didn't even do price drops on games. Only their standard 20 dollar off promotions. Now they're moving to 70-80 bucks. Guess we'll see their first party games not going lower than 50 dollars.immortal-joeMemberOct 25, 20171,655Man, some of you are young huh?AxisofweevilsMemberOct 25, 20172,121The console price is fine, the game prices are ridiculous. Not arrogant.Selling TotK and BotW "Switch 2 Editions" at full price with the upgrades added on for a total of $80 and $70 respectively? Arrogant.Pricing the Switch 2 at $449.99? Not amazing, but certainly fair. Not arrogant.Pricing a Switch 2 bundle at $499.99 with Mario Kart World, a full price game, included from day one? Pretty solid deal actually.Said full price being $80? Arrogant.Having a little demo that introduces you to features of the Switch 2 and tells you facts about it? Cool, whatever. Not making that little demo a free pack-in game? Arrogant.Adding Gamecube games to NSO without making it some higher 3rd subscription tier? Great, not arrogant.Giving away the gamechat feature for the first 9-ish months? Not arrogant.Accessory and controller pricing? A little on the high side, maybe enough to be added to the arrogant column. So, yeah, kind of a mixed bag but I've definitely seen them in less audacious postures before.
