IGN: Nintendo has insisted Mario Kart World & Nintendo Switch 2 Editions justify their shocking $80 price tag.
IDontBeatGamesThreadMarksman - Saved Transistor's sanity twiceMemberOct 29, 201720,436New YorkSourceIn his response, Trinen insisted Mario Kart world justifies its price tag, and pointed to the upcoming dedicated Mario Kart World Nintendo Direct where fans will learn more about the game and what it has to offer.Click to expand...Click to shrink..."I would say it's less about the strategy of pricing Mario Kart World, it's more just whenever we look at a given game, we just look at what is the experience, and what's the content, and what's the value?" Trinen said."Mario Kart World, I think especially as you see from the Nintendo Direct, not to give you any hints or anything, but I did read your article this morning and I think you had mentioned that you didn't find a lot to discover when roaming around. So I would say tune into our Mario Kart Direct to see what, maybe you'll be able to find out about that."But honestly, this is a game that is so big and so vast and you will find so many little things in it to discover. And there's still some other secrets remaining that I think as people end up buying and playing the game, they're going to find this to be probably the richest Mario Kart experience they've ever had."Click to expand...Click to shrink...We also asked Trinen about the $80 cost of some of the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games. While there is a $10 upgrade path for existing owners of these games on the Switch, and both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Nintendo Switch 2 Edition ($69.99) and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Nintendo Switch 2 Edition ($79.99) are available as part of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, Nintendo is not offering any sort of discount to newcomers on Switch 2. Trinen's answer here echoed his Mario Kart World response, pointing to the value Nintendo sees in its games.Click to expand...Click to shrink..."Well, again, what I would say is that we just look at each individual game and we look at the content and the value of that game, and then we say, 'what is the right price for the value of this entertainment?' " he said."What I would probably counter to some of that is that really what you're looking at is for the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, that's the physical price for somebody that has not bought the base game. For somebody who has bought Tears of the Kingdom or Breath of the Wild, the upgrade packs for those are $9.99. And if you happen to be a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack member, both of the Zelda upgrade packs are inclusive within that membership. So there's no additional charge for those."But I think overall, our general approach is really just focus on what's the content, what's the value, and what's an appropriate price based on that."Click to expand...Click to shrink... The truth is that these prices were inevitable the moment consumers went to bat for companies going from $60 to $70. This is just a natural next step until these companies find the high-end price point where it starts to affect their bottom lines.BurtFight Sephiroth or end video gamesMemberOct 28, 20179,427Oh yeah then try billing by the hourRedHeatMemberOct 25, 201713,571Cyberpunk 2077 deserves a 70$ price tag more than any Mario Kart at 80$ MatushMemberOct 25, 20171,519SlovakiaLMAO, they aren't even hiding it anymore.AudibleeMemberMar 14, 2025436Unless it includes future dlc for free, it hasn't proven anything. They are charging for it because they can and to chase growth. No doubt thus game is much more expensive than Mario Kart 8 was for Nintendo, like any corporation they want product 2 to make more money than product 1 and at this point the only way to do this is.....to increase the price.Gonna see that with a lot of their heavy hitters this gen because of the same issue.KahhhhyleMemberJun 8, 20213,030Bucca said:Maybe in about 5-6 years you'll get $15 offClick to expand...Click to shrink...Hopefully it's cheaper on eBay then lol. Saying the game is "big" doesn't really mean much when say BOTW was a big game and they didn't suddenly decide it was worth $70, 7 years ago.Personally, I feel that gamers as a collective failed the test that TOTK gave when it was priced at $70 and Nintendo took that info as "If it's one of the BIG Ips, they'll pay an extra $10 on it". Donkey Kong is being spared the $80 price tag just because it's the start of a new entry imo. ponzu_boyJ->E LocalizationVerifiedOct 25, 20174,902Single player mode spanning an entire open world!?Rinku_MemberMay 4, 20231,940Cool to see Bill is still around. I don't really have a ton of anger around higher prices at launch if its so devs can manage the higher costs they're taking on, Nintendo being so against putting their games on sales this gen and last is the more shitty part imo. Doesn't matter how high the quality is, a 10 year old game should not cost that much money to experience. They've already made massively back on their return.AudibleeMemberMar 14, 2025436Knockout mode on Nintendos awful online servers has existed for many years.NotLiquidOne Winged SlayerMemberOct 25, 201737,483It's nice to hear from Trinen again. As they really highlight the lack of sales/price drops from Nintendo this gen. Especially as these titles CAN be had for cheaper elsewhere. So to me, it just seems odd they didn't do some official "price drops" to perhaps garner some good will. These Switch 2 Editions becoming a $60 version and the Switch 1 versions being made4 $40 would've likely brought some good will towards them. Hell, I would imagine they would've enticed more people to "rebuy" the game fully even if they already had it just to have a new copy on their shelf.JoRuMemberOct 25, 20171,948Jawmuncher said:Personally, I feel that gamers as a collective failed the test that TOTK gave when it was priced at $70 and Nintendo took that info as "If it's one of the BIG Ips, they'll pay an extra $10 on it". The strategy is obviously "$70 standard price, $80 for major entries in A-tier IP:s". A-tier IP:s are essentially Mario Kart, 3D Mario, Zelda, Smash Bros. and Animal Crossing at its core. Donkey Kong is B-tier (right now at least), so it's $70.
