Microsoft Terminates Employee Who When On Stage To Protest Against The Software Company On Its 50th-Anniversary, Saying It Was Due To ‘Acts Of Misconduct’
An event celebrating Microsoft’s 50th-anniversary was disrupted by two employees, who claimed that the software giant was a  ‘war profiteer’ and that it had to stop using AI to fulfill illicit goals. The celebratory evening had the firm’s artificial intelligence head, Mustafa Suleyman, along with former and current Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer and Satya Nadella present on stage, meaning that there was no opportunity like the current one for these protestors to become the voice of the ‘voiceless.’ Unfortunately, these turn of events cost the employment of these individuals, with one of them almost immediately terminated from her position. The second Microsoft employee was also dismissed, but days after putting in a two-week notice Ibtihal Aboussad was the name of one of the protestors present at the Microsoft event, and after the memorable episode, the Redmond firm took swift action. Prior to being terminated from their positions, Aboussad and a second employee, Vaniya Agrawal, were sending separate emails to thousands of co-workers, stating that Microsoft should sever its contracts with the Israeli government. As reported by The Verge, Aboussad received the following the email, which reprimanded her for her actions. “Earlier today, you interrupted a speech by Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman during the Company’s 50th anniversary event in Redmond, Seattle, by yelling and finger-pointing at the CEO before a live audience of thousands of attendees, and making hostile, unprovoked, and highly inappropriate accusations against the CEO, the Company and Microsoft generally. While the CEO remained calm and attempted to de-escalate the matter, your conduct was so aggressive that you had to be escorted out of the room by security.” Both Aboussad and Agrawal are protestors linked to a group that carry out multiple protests against Microsoft for its closed connections with Israel. More details from the email to Aboussad said that her acts were designed to cause disruption at an event that is considered to be a huge milestone for Microsoft. Moreoever, she has yet to apologize for her actions, which ultimately led to her dismissal. “The company has concluded that your misconduct was designed to gain notoriety and cause maximum disruption to this highly anticipated event. It is also concerning that you have not apologized to the company, and in fact you have shown no remorse for the effect that your actions have had and will have.” Aboussad was a software engineer for Microsoft’s AI division, and based in Canada. The former employee’s actions could be based on the evidence she spotted, but so far, there is no substantiated proof that the company has any link to the atrocities happening in other parts of the world.
