So what ever happened to the rumoured Twilight princess and Windwaker ports for the switch?

It's something that I've wondered for a while. I recall it was insiders who said Nintendo had them ready to drop at any moment in the back, and between the switch 2, and the windwaker GameCube release, it seems unlikely these will ever come.
Also wondering where this rumour started, it often feels as though things get spread like gospel, and yet we rarely get the full picture.

Heavily rumoured that they was ready for release. And now they're not expected to see the light of day. Not sure why it can't be released if it's ready to go.

the ports probably never existed, just guesses from insiders.

Stuck on the Wii U :(
On the bright side… now that we're in Switch 2 territory we can spend the next 7 years fantasizing about Wind Waker in 4k120fps

they never existed, and it's hilarious how often people fell for this
the mental hoops people go to to this day to justify it blow my mind. like, yep, nintendo spent a bunch of money of HD ports and then decided to not get a return on any of it. CLASSIC nintendo

My guess:
They were ready extremely early into the Switch's lifespan, and Nintendo sat on them until they "needed" a release like these, which just...never happened. Who knows, maybe Echoes of Wisdom was kind of an unplanned game, and one or both of these ports were destined to come out around that time originally (last September or whatever).
Then, I think Nintendo started mounting their Switch 2 plans, and these ports just had no place within those plans.
I think your best hope now is that Nintendo transitions them over to Switch 2 and they eventually fill space with them. Otherwise, they've just been binned because they don't fall in line with their NSO strategy RE: Gamecube games.
That's my hunch anyway.
I think the folks saying "they never existed" should appreciate that virtually every other major Wii U title saw a Switch port - right up until recently with Xenoblade X. There's no way these ports never existed lol.

Annoying, I've never played Wind Waker and would prefer a port of the WiiU version.
Worst comes to worst I'll have to dust off the WiiU.

Just an easy guess for insider clout that hasn't panned out, I can tell you with absolute certainty they will be released again eventually, that's not a tall order.

If we guess them before every direct we'll be right eventually. Same for Metroid Prime Trilogy, however that ended up only being a remaster of 1.

They're in the same pasture as the FE4 remake and the Metroid Prime 2+3 remaster.

They've got them locked up in a basement and are making them put lotion on their skin or they'll get delayed another 6 months.

I imagine these were actually rumours that were entirely manifested rather than being based on any actual development at Nintendo.

It's funny how probable, low effort ports are so often what "insiders" seem to discover.

Not sure if you have access to the original version or if you'll be buying a Switch 2 and will sub to NSO with the expansion (jeez that was a mouthful) -
but IMO the Gamecube version holds up extremely well, and I could hear an argument for the art style/aesthetic being better than the Wii U version. The Triforce fetch quest complaints are also overblown IMO - if you're doing enough natural exploring as you progress through the game, taking notes based on the little hint system the game gives you (the fish by each island) it's not a drag at all.

Nintendo hoards games for years until they decide to release them. This is very apparent to anyone who pays the slightest bit of attention to previous "insider" leaks that ended up being accurate. You'll see them, probably mid-way through the Switch 2 lifespan.

I could still seem them coming. Nintendo might want to continue to release some Switch games over the next year or so and these would be good candidates that would appeal to both Switch 1 and 2 owners.

The whole thing was a load of bollocks that never existed.
Given how many Wii U games got ported to Switch, the Zelda games were a pretty safe bet. Internet people like to pretend to be 'insiders', so they just said it for clout.
It's like me saying 'my sources tell me that Nintendo will announce a new 3D Mario game in the next year'. I've just pulled it out of my arse, but it's a fairly safe bet, so it makes me sound like I know what I'm talking about when it (probably!) happens. In the Zelda example, it's a 'safe' bet that didn't actually pan out.

It was rumors spurred by some pretty big insiders like Grubb. But really, they also just seemed like entirely logical and predictable releases, the safest bets. I'm still confused and annoyed why they haven't been released tbh

Call me a fool but I do believe they have essentially finished ports sitting somewhere and they'll be released next year as late Switch releases. The justification being that the OG Switch can't play Gamecube games anyways so why not give another option?
But yeah I don't know. I guess they just had other Zelda games out every year and feared cannibalizing sales? They'd sell well and be low cost to release. It seems so obvious.

I'll be getting Switch 2 yes, but wasn't planning on getting NSO.
If the emulator makes it look clean I suppose I'll save myself the hassle and just play it on there. Will wait for impressions and comparisons.

Saving them for a rainy day, or they might release them over the next couple of holiday seasons to throw a bone to everyone who's stuck on Switch 1

They were never actually rumored or leaked, just speculated and strongly wished to exist. To be fair they were Wii U games and most Wii U games were ported on Switch. The demand is there. The only reason Nintendo aren't doing them is timing. They want to keep them for another time.

So these were done years ago for Switch and are now being "hoarded" for Switch 2. A handful of games were sat on and then strategy just got super embellished over the years.

my wild guess is the games were prepped and set to be released sometime before or after TOTK's initial release date. when that got pushed they realised they were gonna have a huge gap with no Zelda game for a while so they shelved the remakes and pushed them to Switch 2

I don't think they were ever real, just wishful thinking. Wouldn't be surprised though if it was false information that Nintendo used to try and catch leakers.

what's your source on this? finishing a game and releasing it six months later does not qualify.

Do y'all have actual proof and cases of this actually happening and please do not mention "Fire Emblem Engage, Xenoblade 3 and Metroid Prime Remastered were finished 6 months before release".

The fast sail is a bigger QoL improvement than the shortened fetch quest imo. I still have my GC copy and I only ever replay the Wii U version.

I still think they exist (haha yes i know). because they released the 3d Mario collection while making Mario 64 available on the N64 app.
They'll do the same with sunshine on the gamecube app for switch 2

Maybe they didn't exist but also "Wii U game coming to Switch" is the most standard thing to guess, and these aren't exactly obscure games. But Nintendo works on their own timeline. It took them all generation to port Xenoblade X.
So at this point they'll likely be ported to Switch 2.

Not the same, everything about Metroid Prime is quite well documented, including how the trilogy story came about.

Nintendo has been sitting on games, in some cases for a year, for timed releases. Overall they're in an advantageous position and will dip into them eventually, but yeah it was wishful thinking.
Who knows how quick a turnaround they can get since they were released HD capable on Wii U. Further speculation would be saving their releases for the Gamecube NSO and later a potential Wii NSO.

Respectfully disagree! I own and have beaten both a few times (Wind Waker GCN as a recently as a couple months ago, actually) and found it to hold up extremely well.
I would also say the only drastic changes are the sail that lets you sail in any direction and the fetch quest. But I'm a freak who likes changing the direction of the wind every time I need to (it makes me feel like a dope wind wizard) and don't mind the fetch quest (I firmly believe that folks overstate how cumbersome it is, it's not at all if you're just exploring throughout the game - I only had like 3 to get by the time I was done all of the dungeons).
But hey, to each their own!

Someone at nintendo probably got them running on switch, in some state. After a few rounds through the rumor telephone game, that became 'Nintendo has remastered games ready to release.'
