A Minecraft Movie director defends popcorn-throwing Chicken Jockey chaos, says viewers just having "a true party"
The director of A Minecraft Movie is not bothered by the chaotic scenes seen in some cinemas as viewers interrupt screenings.

The director of A Minecraft Movie has reacted to the chaotic scenes seen in some cinemas as viewers interrupt screenings to stand up, scream and empty buckets of popcorn over other people.
A Minecraft Movie is a breakout success that's performed far beyond initial expectations, seemingly fuelled by its viral nature among younger viewers. In particular, videos on social media have shown crowds reacting wildly to the film's now-notorious "Chicken Jockey" scene.
But while the trend may be popular, it hasn't gone down well with all cinema goers. Viewers have been removed from showings for disruptive behaviour and police have been called as the trend has continued - escalating now to a disturbing incident where someone brought a live chicken into a screening.

Perhaps unusurprisingly, A Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess doesn't sound too bothered about it all.

"It's way too funny," Hess told New York Times. "It's been a total blast. I'm just laughing my brains out every time someone sends me a new video.
"Just the fact that people are making memories at the movies - that's what it's all about," Hess continued. "That's why we do it. I never could have anticipated this level of passion and fun and craziness that's happening."
Is it okay to dump your popcorn over other people? Hess seems to think so.
"No one's going to get hurt from popcorn," he concluded. "Look, when I go to the movies with my kids, it's like a popcorn massacre that happens and they're not throwing anything, but it ends up on the ground, regardless."

Man, fuck this guy! Loved his work with Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, but he's acting like a fucking tool with this take.

Just make Jared have to clean the theater after and I imagine he'd change his mind. Coming from someone who was an usher at a major movie theater for years this stuff sucks for workers and patrons.

Yeah that's a shitty comment to make. It's okay to say let people have fun at a cinema showing like Minecraft - which has its own Avengers Endgame style moments - but fuck throwing popcorn.

Channeling the same energy as The Rock with telling people to sing in cinemas
Anyway, it's awful behaviour and that it isn't called it for what it is just enables it further; was the same shit with Wicked last year

Be curious if he's ever worked in a service industry. I feel like if this encouraged, we're going to see this more and more with arsehole influencer trying to get there 20 seconds of fame. God I hope the Cinema staff are getting overtime.

Oh dear.. Stuff like this is way beyond what I find acceptable too. I already find it annoying with lesser examples, like hearing kids screaming because they see a 1-2 second clip of Fortnite in Avengers, and I don't even wanna be a in a theater when everyone "woos" after something happens. Guess it's debatable as having an emotion reaction to something is considered "good", but I'm just not interested in being around that.

That last part isn't debatable at all. Are people not supposed to laugh at a funny joke in a movie?

Him and his entire family are part of a church that is full of abuse, racism and generally contributing to LGBTQ+ teens killing themselves.
There is no empathy for anyone but themselves within these people.

When I saw it with my kids I thought the yelling and talking was amusing. People have done that at movies since forever.
But making a mess is when I got annoyed. The theatre didn't even have alot of employees. That would suck having to clean up that theater yourself after every showing.

Yeah true, I guess "within reason"? I guess laughing/crying is basically what the movie makers want to push for with certain scenes and you can't really suppress that. I think being excited about something you can, I was more referring to when people "woo" with that.

Nobody gives a fuck about the person who has to clean up the mess. And no cleaning up an entire movie theatre with intentionally thrown snacks is not their job!

It sucks for the next screenings crowd as the crew doing the cleaning is usually like 2 or maybe 3 people, if that which means the worst of the mess doesn't get cleaned, just shoveled under the chairs for the night crew to come through and clean up. So the folks coming in have all kinds of crap on the floor, chairs and even the screen if it gets bad enough.

These are the same idiots that think filming someone knocking over a supermarket store display is hilarious. Anything for "content" though.
