[Digital Foundry] PS4 is a very natural point of comparison for the Switch 2; "...you can expect a PS4 level experience"

"It's got all of the modern features: ray tracing support, mesh shaders, everything that a 30 series class Nvidia card...this can do, just with a much lower level of overall performance."

"So overall, I think the Switch 2 is doing a pretty great job of turning in PS4 level visuals. Again, possibly, with other upgrades and loading times...other upgrades when it comes to more modern titles that are pushing out more advanced rendering technologies...I think that's probably what you can expect is a PS4 level experience"

FF7 Remake: The presentation is PS4 levels or there abouts. So broadly speaking quite comparable to PS4 if not actually a bit more of a favorable experience compared to PS4

Then how do we explain Cyberpunk? It runs far better than the PS4 versions of the game, and that's without even getting into Phantom Liberty.

I guess with enough compromises X game can run on [insert console here] I dont see the problem?

Nah Switch 2 is way better than both ps4 and ps4 pro. Actual game performances doesn't determined by some random metrics

PS4 visuals, but the CPU is leagues beyond the Jaguar CPU of the PS4/XBO

Cyberpunk is not that demanding on PC at least. The launch was a disaster for bugs and lack of optimization

Also Borderlands 4 and James Bond project. It's obvious that they're gearing up Switch 2 be a portable PS5 right from the start. IN TERMS OF THIRD PARTY SUPPORT!

Looking at what a base PS4 can do, that would be great in a handheld. FF7R, RDR2, Death Stranding, LoU2, so many beautiful games that hold up visually. If it gets beyond that, that would be icing on the cake.

More to do with the high speed storage on Switch 2 then its processing power.
A SSD was added to the min spec for Phantom liberty.

I loved my PS4, but I don't recall a lot of AAA 120fps games made by Sony.

I think in most ways it's more like Series S than PS4. I mean load times are very important among other things.

Bcause they have different goals, Nintendo also isn't making a game with TLOU II level of fidelity

I think PS4 Pro is a good comparison. A true portable PS4 level machine is really something to behold right now.

If I can get ps4 visuals in handheld mode, that's good enough for me, although I imagine CPU should give better performance stability than the ps4.

It is absolutely not a portable PS5. it has some similar feature capabilitys like frame generation/ray-tracing, but it is leagues behind the PS5 in terms of performance.
We'll have to see how long the third party AAA sentiment lasts as well.

They say PS4 level visuals with more modern hardware which makes it more capable in some aspects. Don't confuse that and think they're saying its just a PS4.

Just because you didn't see them doesn't mean they weren't possible. Also, you will not be seeing a lot of AAA 120fps Switch 2 games either. Definitely not from third parties.

I would love to see this but my bet is that Monolith will focus on fidelity.

It's a goddamn handheld, for crying out loud!
PS4 level is still pretty impressive.
People expecting it to compete with even the Seres S were deluding themselves (heck, some were expecting PS5 visuals!)
I can see Switch 2 games being much more optimized for the hardware than the Series S, though (due to the popularity of the hardware).
But man, I still don't get it. You don't buy a Switch/Nintendo console for cutting edge stuff anymore. You buy it for the great library of games that will be available on the system!
It's still a gigantic leap compared to Switch 1!

…forgive me if I'm misremembering but wasn't that game a showcase of transfer speeds over processing speeds(something that the switch 2 has at similar levels in fact )

Yeah, the headline feels misleading, seems like they are saying ps4 as a baseline but due to all the new advancements it goes beyond that in many aspects, thanks to dlss, raytracing etc...

It probably peeps who have not been in the Nintendo eco system for a while that are complaining about horsepower of the Switch 2.

PS4 with some updated modern hardware features is great, nothing wrong with that.
Going from gameboy to something that could potentially run something that looks like tlou2 in my lifetime is insane.

Uh because PS4 didn't have an HDMI port compatible with 120hz, for sure some indies might have ran at that if possible tbh

In terms of games, not performance. It'll get more and more PS5-gen only ports, SW Outlaws and Borderlands 4 are just a start. Unlike Switch 1, there are not many games out there for Switch 2 to have late ports of. Day-and-date future.

They mention this in the video. It is like PS4 but with modern render techniques so it will punch above its weight.

Didnt we already have the same thread based on the DF Preview ?
Or is this a new take based on an actual hands on ?

PS4 raster boosted by modern features, architecture and RT/tensor cores is about what I expected.

I dont think anyone honestly thinks its at "just a PS4" level.
What seems to be the hot debate is how much more capable it is. Seeing someone say PS5 portable is wild, lol.
I've seen games comparisons where its not even close to a Series S. I've seen comparisons where its similar to a Series S.
Expectations continue to be all over the place.

Eh NS2 is running cyberpunk without crashing or dying or any 4k games so it's clearly a decent bit above PS4.

Not only is that fantastic to hear, but it's also good to remember that this'll have a better CPU and current gen bells and whistles to boot. Honestly, it seems like a very impressive piece of hardware, i'm very excited to see how Nintendo specifically utilizes all this extra horsepower.
