The Wheel of Time season 3 finale, The Rehearsal season 2, and more new TV this week
Spring has sprung, and the best way to celebrate the warmer weather is to watch TV. I know I say this every week, but bear with me — there’s some big ones. I, for one, welcome the day when I can curl up after a long day of galavanting outside and watch whatever fresh hell (complimentary) Nathan Fielder has cooked up for us on The Rehearsal season 2. And it’s always a pleasure to have Ramy Youssef back on TV, and even just the trailer for #1 Happy Family USA has a lot to love. Here’s the best new TV premieres and finales coming out this week. New shows on Netflix Project UFO Genre: Deadpan alien invasionRelease date: April 16Showrunner/creator: Kasper BajonCast: Piotr Adamczyk, Mateusz Kosciukiewicz, Julia Kijowska, and more There’s been an alleged U.F.O. sighting, which of course necessitates two things: a ufologist and media attention. What kicks off is an alleged landing that splits a nation in two, with everyone trying to figure out what’s real, what’s not, and whether an alien really is walking among us. New shows on Max The Rehearsal season 2 Genre: Chaos reality (maybe simulated)Release date: April 20 at 10:30 p.m. EDT/7:30 p.m. PDTShowrunner/creator: Nathan Fielder Nathan Fielder is back with The Rehearsal. In season 1 this show became a truly unpredictable ride of him pulling back again and again on his initial concept. So probably you should just let the show take you where he wants in season 2. New shows on Prime Video #1 Happy Family USA Genre: Assimilation comedyRelease date: April 17 with all episodesShowrunner/creator: Ramy Youssef and Pam BradyCast: Ramy Youssef, Alia Shawkat, Salma Hindy, and more It’s summer 2001 in New Jersey, and Hussein Hussein (Ramy Youssef) has a good feeling about how this is finally going to be the year for his family. But, this being summer 2001, suffice it to say things are about to get a lot more complicated for the Muslim family. Described as being “from the childhood nightmares of Ramy Youssef,” #1 Happy Family USA will comedically (in the “laugh so you don’t have to cry way”) look back at the terrifying knee-jerk patriotism of the U.S. of the early 2000s. Leverage: Redemption season 3 Genre: HeistsRelease date: April 17Showrunner/creator: Dean DevlinCast: Gina Bellman, Christian Kane, Beth Riesgraf, and more It’s heist time! The crew is rolling out again, taking down more bad guys who have wronged the innocent. Elliot (Christian Kane) is posing with a gavel? Fun weekend heists go wrong? All comes with the territory of conning the “scum of the scum.” The Wheel of Time season 3 finale Genre: High fantasyRelease date: April 17Showrunner/creator: Rafe JudkinsCast: Josha Stradowski, Rosamund Pike, Marcus Rutherford, and more After last week’s big battle, it’s all coming down to this — which is, as you might expect, yet another major fight for the side of the good in Wheel of Time. This has been a series of revelations, big moves, and powerful gains. And yet, Rand (Josha Stradowski) remains relatively untested. Can he hold his own in Wheel of Time’s season 3 finale? New shows on Apple TV Plus Government Cheese Genre: Surrealist comedy dramaRelease date: April 16Showrunner/creator: Paul Hunter and Aeysha CarrCast: David Oyelowo, Simone Missick, Bokeem Woodbine, and more Hampton Chambers (David Oyelowo) is fresh out of prison and eager to make his family the toast of Chadsworth. His thought? the “Big Magician,” a self-sharpening power drill. But his efforts to be on the straight and narrow run into several hiccups — old debts that come to collect, new family structures that formed in his absence, and maybe even divine intervention?
