Google Raises The Minimum Storage Requirements For Running Android 15 On Phones And Tablets, No Longer Can Devices Ship With 16GB Of Internal Memory
Phone and tablet makers have become less stingy when it comes to adding internal memory to their devices, but Google still wants to make a point if any of these companies are having funny ideas. The Mountain View company is raising the minimum storage requirements for Android 15, meaning that any mobile computing product capable of running the firm’s operating system update but only has 16GB of onboard storage will straight up be incompatible, despite fulfilling other pre-requisites.
Devices running Android 15 now need to feature 32GB of internal storage to be compatible with the update, but modern-day smartphones and tablets ship with far more than that
While Android 14 can be installed with 16GB of internal storage, Android Authority stumbled upon some valuable information regarding Android 15. With the new requirements, out of the 32GB storage, 75 percent of that internal memory needs to be allocated to the data partition, which stores pre-installed system apps, app data, system files, and more. The report states that Google cannot legally prevent phone and tablet manufacturers from building devices with less than 32GB of storage so long as they use the AOSP version of Android.
It is likely that Google raised the minimum storage requirements of running Android 15 to deliver a better user experience for low-end smartphones and slates, which ship out in droves in a multitude of regions. However, the advertising behemoth has not specified which type of internal memory should be used when running Android 15. More affordable devices ship with eMMC flash memory, which is significantly slower than current-generation UFS 4.0 chips, but these are also more affordable to mass produce.
Even if low-end devices can be updated to Android 15 because they fulfill the storage requirements, the entire user experienced can be hampered due to the use of slower storage. Aside from the mandatory internal memory count, the report states other requirements of running Android 15, such as having the option to share their emergency contacts data with the system’s Emergency Location service when performing emergency calls.
