Tekken 8 Season 2 patch is setting reddit on fire and getting the game review bombed on steam.

I don't play tekken so I'm not sure what's going on but it seems season 2 has pissed off a lot of people from pro players to the internet at large. Review bombed on steam, YouTube videos thrashing the changes and reddit going crazy. From people who play the game is this an overreaction or are things that bad?

Evo Japan is going to be pretty interesting for the game.
Registration ends soon and the game still hasnt reached 800 entrants. Its a pretty big drop from last year numbers.
At least, it wont be as boring as Leroy 7.

From what I'm reading it seems they doubled down on making the game more offensive and a guessing game when most people wanted more defense.

my broski and his IRL lan game group (like 10 ppl he likes to have over for game nights) were basically addicted to Tekken 7 for several years, but they don't play Tekken 8 anymore

As someone who stopped playing months ago this patch is so fucking funny. They were constantly telling fans that they've heard their feedback and concerns and then drop this lmao. Reminds me of the last few DBFZ patches, just doubling down on absolute bullshit

I put so many hours into Tekken 7, absolutely love that game. 8's a huge disappointment to me. I might pick it up once a month now, if even that, and just for a few matches online. Looks like they will continue to go in the wrong direction..

So this is all couched in the expectation of S2 being more defensive because that's pretty much what the producers told us it would be like.
Then S2 actually hits and it's buffs everywhere, even for top characters that people were already complaining were bullshit. On top of general system changes that really encourage unbridled aggression (such as having to eat and block mixups that do more chip damage than just getting thrown, but you also eat chip damage for successfully breaking throws). And some characters like Steve got slightly retooled to further reinforce mix-up heavy gameplay too. And this is on top of things people really complained about in S1, namely the game being so focused on Heat mode, which this patch ends up doubling down on as well.
The S2 reception is just wild right now

Imagine everyone begging on their knees for game-wide nerfs and more defensive options and they say they will rollback on the oppression and then the game turns into Mugen and everyone is buffed to fuck and you have to go online knowing you will get blasted with the biggest bullshit imaginable that is all safe on block, homing and 120+ damage off a single interaction
it's pure brainrot. They did remember to nerf one character though! But it happens to be my main who was never top tier because ??????????????? why the fuck not screw lee i guess

Ah so this is like if Capcom just made xfactor go on longer and Phoenix got a buff where she goes into dark Phoenix on level 3 super meter instead

I think the backlash to the changes go far beyond just the lack of defensive options they promised (and adding offensive options to counter the sidestepping boost). The changes are a huge doubling-down of T8's initial vision of heavy offensive, 50/50 mixup heavy interactions and reduction of playstyle individuality. To the point where the DNA of Tekken that's run through 30 years of this series is really breaking down with the S2 changes.

It's this, but imagine that Capcom decides to issue a UMvC3 balance patch after all this time
And the first thing they do is buff Vergil across the board

As someone who doesn't play Tekken 8 (played all of the previous entries quite a lot though), it's fascinating to see a game that seems to be designed in such a way. It's rare that you get a game where the developers want one thing, the audience wants another, with the developers doubling down and just continuing their path.
Kind of ballsy and admirable in one way.

The game was already overly aggressive and the S2 patch doubled down on it after people begged for more defense. It's a fucking joke and the game deserves all the shit it's going to get.

I'm convinced the "throw breaks do damage" change was written as a joke and someone high as balls took it completely seriously.

Bamco already said they will undo some of these whacky changes, like the chip damage on tech throws, but they were too late because today's patch was already submitted.

Tekken 8 being an absolute dumpster fire competitive wise to the point the biggest names in the scene hate it with a passion was not in my bingo card. Really hope another 3D fighting game rises in popularity with this, it's one hell of an opportunity.

Yes, but also worse because they decided that if Phoenix is broken, everyone should be and now you have to sign your will every time you go online.
Characters got given very similar moves to each other, buffing them and wiping out their weaknesses and deleting their individuality
Which is WEIRD because Tekken 8 actually rolled this egregious shit back from T7, so they were literally in a good base despite the heat mode brainrot, but they decided to go straight to Tekken 7 season 12
They had enough braincells to know to rein things in and have (most) of the cast come back to weaknesses and strengths and decided to ruin everything. it's impossible to understand

The number of times they changed Heat from its initial showing, throughout the betas, and then the final game already told me that they didn't have a clue as to what they wanted to do with that system alone.

The funny thing is, people are realizing that Tekken 8 season 1 was also shit, but we accepted it cuz it was a new entry/vision. But Season 2 did not build upon those changes, they just made everything worse.
Best response I saw on reddit was "we heard you wanted more defense, so we gave you more things to defend against!"

Haven't played at all since last week but I play a hundred matches with a character and then move to another one so I might not be affected by this as I'm starting with a new character fresh. From what I'm seeing online tho, there's a lot of chip damage now? lol

I am so interested in watching this play out
I haven't played a Tekken until 8 since tag on PS2, so it feels like a brand new franchise to me and I've been loving the shit out of it. As someone without the experience of 7 I can say the game is just a blast to play despite all this but obviously I hope they get it back on track for the folks that are really disappointed. I can't imagine them straight up ignoring such a big backlash
I will say I don't mind heat, but I kind of hate the rage moves and their implementation. Heat could be improved though for sure. And yeah changing button inputs on folks is a choice that's for sure!
That being said, didn't people straight hate 7 for like the first 2-3 years?

That'd be an incredible commitment to the bit considering a lot of these changes were publicly shown and discussed weeks ago.
Which is wild considering they saw they wholly negative reaction at the time and still went through with it. People were already unhappy before these proposed changes and now those people have given up hope.

Kinda surprising to see people crying out for nerfs and more defense... usually that's the opposite of what people like in FG patches. I know the game is out of control right now, but a big nerf patch would feel bad without some new toys to play with as well.
I'm pretty mid at Tekken, but I thought the whole game was about hitting people with confusing/ambiguous 50/50s into launcher.
When people talk about "more defense" what do they mean? some kind of defensive move that protects you from the 50/50s?

Yeah, I haven't seen this level of hate for a fighting game since the first two seasons of SFV. Even all the pros I've seen are coming out of the woodwork to say how much they hate this, to the point where I genuinely wonder if they backtrack on a lot of these changes in a month or two.
As a SF6 player it feels weird to be on the other side now with SF doing fine and Tekken being on fire.

You mean endless gorilla offense ISN'T endlessly hype? Like, people all of a sudden want to think and play against their opponent instead of against overbearing system mechanics?!

Unless you include the Arcade years then not that I remember. The first 2-3 years of Tekken 7 everyone was so hyped about Tekken. It was when "Good Ass Tekken" was thrown around every day. And it also includes the rise of Arslan and Pakistan as a competitive region going head to head with South Korea.
There was some clearly busted shit that didn't rear its head till much later like Akuma (though at the time people like Poongko definitely tried) but Season 2 of Tekken 7 was mostly seen as great from what I remember.

We been talking about it in the Tekken 8 OT and will be continuing when the next OP drops either today or tomorrow.
Basically its a wild patch. We will see what happens over time but it's shocking with the amount of changes.

I think the combination of showing off early the changes, assuring the players that they heard their (very, very loud) complaints in response to the showing, then doubling down on those changes on release is what has everyone pissed

People complain about NRS releasing frequent small patches but I've always believed the opposite can lead to nightmare situation like this. You can't fix this with a quick patch. The best course of action would be to revert it and delay it till they fix it.
