Doctor Who’s current lack of an iconic outfit democratizes cosplay, Russell T. Davies says
Polygon sat down with Ncuti Gatwa and Varada Sethu, the stars of Doctor Who’s latest season, recently by video chat, and when we asked for their favorite things they got to do while filming, there was one that they truly gushed about.  “I love the outfits,” Sethu said. “Honestly, I love the outfit reveals. […] The first time we come on set looking at each other in our outfits, I feel like we don’t know how to behave.”  “No, we don’t!” Gatwa exclaimed, as they both laughed.  “You look amazing! Look at that!” Sethu impersonated their on-set reactions. “[We were] screaming at each other, every single episode. I’d get excited for the first day of shooting with Ncuti for every episode, because I just can’t wait to see his outfit. I can’t wait to see how we look.”  On-set outfit reveals for every episode are a new thing for Doctor Who, a show in which the titular character usually has one iconic look to go along with whatever new actor is in the role. The most unique details of those looks — whether it’s a pinstripe suit with Converse kicks, a panama hat and question-mark cane, a ludicrously long scarf, or a particular striped-shirt-and-long-cardigan combo — become visual shorthand for that version of the Doctor among fans.  A clear change in costume has also become a way in which Who showrunners let the audience know that the hectic transitional adventure is over, and it’s time to find the show’s new rhythm. Often, after the Doctor regenerates — the restorative process that provides an in-fiction explanation for why the Doctor looks and acts pretty different now — the show will highlight the moment that the new Doctor changes out of the old Doctor’s clothes and selects a new regular look.  Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor, in contrast, seems to have a new, incredibly fashionable look in just about every episode — if not more than one! Which might make it difficult to pin down a fashion shorthand for his Fifteenth Doctor. But longtime Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies hopes that the new Doctor’s vibrant and ever-changing fashion (supplied by costume designer Pam Downe) will be a boon for cosplayers, especially casual ones.  “I do love opening the door for cosplayers,” Davies told Polygon. “In one episode in the first season he set out of the TARDIS in a pair of jeans and a duffle coat. And at the [finale], he was in a pair of Levi’s and a black leather jacket. And that means almost anyone can cosplay.”  Davies noted that cosplay can demand dedication, research, attention to detail — and often a lot of money, adding: “And if it’s your hobby, then that’s money well spent. […] But there’s also going to be that casual cosplayer, that kid who fancies being Doctor Who today. And that means now they can put on a pair of jeans and a duffle coat, run out the door or in the middle of the rain, and say, ‘I’m the Doctor.’ And I like that. “It democratizes it, it means no one has ownership. It means you can put on any costume and say, ‘I’m the Doctor today,’ because that’s what he’d do.”  Of course, Davies allowed that there will also be cosplayers who want to recreate every one of Gatwa’s outfits. “So that’s a greater delight for them as well. That’s a collector’s joy.”  As for what makes an outfit an outfit for this Doctor? “Really it’s all down to Ncuti. Whatever he wears looks magnificent.”
