Wave-based indie darling Hypercharge Unboxed is coming to a new console platform later this year. After its initial release in 2020, the five-man dev team is bringing the game to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 later this year, but there’s still one more platform potentially on the horizon: VR.
Speaking to VideoGamer, game designer Joe Henson explained that the team has seen the years of requests for a Hybercharge Unboxed VR release. From PSVR to PC, the dev team is very much aware of the demand from fans every time the game appears online.
Hypercharge Unboxed VR will probably happen
With the studio’s genesis resting in VR development with the early Oculus title New Retro Arcade: Neon, Henson explains that they have the experience to bring their toybox shooter game to VR gamers.
“Technically speaking, we’re quite experienced with [VR],” Henson said. “Things have changed a bit since then, but still, at least we’ve got some experience with it. I think VR is… I think we have to do it, to be honest.”
With the PlayStation 4 and 5 version on the horizon, Henson explains that they have hit every major platform except VR. After spending a decade on the game, capping off the first game with a VR conversion would bring the company full circle.
“When you’re at that toy perspective, it’s just tailor-made for VR,” they explained. “Everything in Hypercharge is. I don’t think anybody’s pulled it off like we have for an action figure game. The scale is like one-to-one.”
“Things would have to be changed,” they continued. “But I think certainly VR is definitely on the table. And I’ve got a feeling we’re going to, we will do it. I think we have to do it.”
