Covenant Gets a New Trailer Showcasing its Dark Fantasy World and Souls-Like FPS Gameplay
Upcoming dark fantasy first-person shooter Covenant has a new trailer. Shown off during the recent Galaxies showcase, the trailer gives us a look at the dark fantasy vibes of the game, as well as a glimpse at some of its intricate levels and fast-paced combat. Check it out below. Covenant is being developed by Legion Studios – a development team made up of veterans of the industry that have previously worked on major titles like DOOM and Call of Duty. This pedigree can be seen in the bits of gameplay we get to see in the trailer, with its brutal weapons that also seemingly offer plenty of feedback for the player to portray their impact. The studio has described the world of Covenant as a large, interconnected one where players will be constantly on the move as they pass through various kingdoms and their dark underbellies. The studio distinctly refers to Souls-like games being an inspiration for the level design for the game, and players be able to discover shortcuts and solve puzzles to discover hidden paths. In terms of gameplay, Covenant looks like it will be taking quite a few cues from old-school shooters like Hexen. The player’s arsenal will be a combination of heavy melee weapons that players can unlock various fighting stances for, as well as ranged combat options like guns and even magic spells. An FAQ released by the studio back in December said that the combat in Covenant will “show more depth and creativity” than players will otherwise be used to from other shooters out there. Throughout the game, players will be able to meld martial arts, magic, and ancient weapons to take down their enemies. When it comes to melee combat, the studio has said that Covenant will use mechanics inspired by fighting games like from the Tekken and Super Smash Bros. franchises, as well as from immersive sims like Dishonored and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Weapons that players find throughout their time in the game can also be improved “several times,” not only making them more effective in the process, but also unlocking new hidden abilities, traits, and catalysts. Covenant will also be taking another page from the Souls-like games playbook, allowing players to decide what weapons they want to equip in which hand for added customisation in combat styles. There will also be other forms of progression, such as unlocking new fighting stances that drastically alter the player’s fighting stance. This includes how the player will be able to even do basic actions, like running, jumping, kicking and sliding. Along with this, stances will also offer different elemental affinities. Covenant is also slated to support online multiplayer. The campaign itself will support co-op where players can team up to progress through the game together. Along with this, there will also be competitive multiplayer game modes, with dedicated arenas available or 1-on-1, 2-on-2 or 3-on-3 duels. Covenant doesn’t yet have a release date. Currently, only a PC version is in development, and will be available through Steam when it comes out.
