Hello Era,
I'm thinking about playing one of the mentioned games in the thread title.
What would you recommend ?
And why of course.
Also what would the best solution of playing them ? (Means emulation etc)

Xenosagas are probably the best thing I played on PS2, along with MGS 3, so that's an easy pick to me.
The Digital Devil Saga duology is cool as well, though. Just not a top tier gaming experience like Xenosagas are for me.
Keep in mind that Xenosaga 1/2 are pretty slow games that are better enjoyed with fast forward via emulation. At a QoL point of view, DDS games probably win.
Edit: Xenosaga I-III includes II as well right? I know people that would skip it but don't do that lol It's great imo, though there's a weird learning curve.

I vastly prefer Digital Devil Saga to the Xenosaga games.
I think Xenosaga 3 is brilliant, I am not too fond of 1 and I especially despise 2.
Both DDS 1 and 2 are a ton of fun.
As for best way to play them? A PS2 and a copy of the game? Barring that, I can't think of any other way… nope, no other way at all.

DDS is very gameplay focused. The story is great and unique, but most of your time is spent in dungeons and combat.
Xenosaga is very story focused. A lot of time spent in cutscenes. The general consensus is that the third game is great but you have to get through a weak second game to get there.
Overall, I think DDS is the better series.

Under a mountain of blankets. Send cute otters.
Xenosaga can be a slow burn initially. Just a fair warning.
If you're looking for a nice stretch of story, go Xenisaga.
If you value more time with a game, Xenosaga's...saga will last you longer than the DDS.

Yeah they were indeed.
I think I recall them being buggy though, like lose all your save progress kind of buggy, so might be better to emulate them. I played them on my PS2, so can't confirm that.

Yeah, Nocturne was especially notorious. Crashes, freezes, not triggering events properly, and corrupted its ownself.
I remember buying every single one, though! Need to get my PS3 out to play all the classics I'd bought.
We'll eventually get a new Xenogears... right? And it'll be in a bundle for the Xeno-Xeno-Xeno sagas. And .hack saga?
On modern consoles, etc.?
Right? :(

Personally really enjoyed Digital Devil Saga, both narratively and mechanically.
I only ever played Xenosaga I and preferred Xenogears. Never got around to II or III.

I never thought about this but does fast forwarding void retro achievements?

With the way Atlus is moving I say play Xenosaga now and wait for Atlus to re-release DDS

Didn't even think of that, but you're probably right.

Hmm overall I like DDS more than xenosaga from a gameplay perspective but the story payoffs in xenosaga 3 are awesome. Xenosaga is a longer investment but also DDS1 is like an extended prolouge similar to XSI in a sense.
DDS has my favorite SMT story though that's not a very high bar. Just be warned the encounter rate for both titles are pretty crazy. Without knowing what you're looking for specifically I'd recommend DDS over XS. If you do end up playing XS eventually also include a translated version of pied piper/missing year between the games.
Pcsx2 works well for both series, XS1 had specific crashes on certain save points though I don't know if that's present in modern version of pcsx2 (I played it back in 2016) but it can be circumvented with save states regardless

In all seriousness, they're both fantastic but it depends on what mood you're in for. Xenosaga is sci-fi epic with some soap opera mixed in, while DDS is moody and bleak in its atmosphere while still being excellent in its story and gameplay.
They really both deserve a play for you at some point, just depends on your current mood.

Nothing in particular tbh.
I only thought about playing some RPGs which I haven't played yet, and those came to mind.

Wait for the eventual DDS Remaster/Remake.
I'd say pound for pound the DDS games are the better choice, very little fat on those (and the OSTs fucking slap). The Xenosaga games have the higher highs, but you'll have to endure a bunch of slop to get to those (meaning Episode II mainly lol)
Edit: Xenosaga I is a very good game though. You'll get a taste what the series is all about pretty quickly and can decide if you wanna keep at it.

I'd go for DDS then and do XS when you're in more of a story mood

Digital Devil Saga
It's REALLY good. Great use of the press-turn battle system. Nice difficulty (easier than SMT, harder than Persona). Really good story.
I also love Xenosaga but it's way messier. Each game felt like it was trying to pull it in a different direction, it's very slow because it was originally being planned as more than three games, and it's just a really weird experience. Also, this isn't a negative for me, but the first game has some of the longest cutscene times of any game I've played. Like it feels as if you're watching whole movies between major gameplay segments sometimes. I would play it eventually but I wouldn't prioritize it over DDS.

Xenosaga, the universe, story and characters they created are some of the best in the genre, at least for me. Even with the mess Xenosaga II was. Too bad they couldn't realize the original vision for the series.

One is great, the other is a fantastic epic story that people beg for it to be remastered, or at the very least built upon for the next trilogy arc.
In case this isn't clear enough, you should absolutely pick Xenosaga. XS2 is the black sheep. It's still imo more interesting gameplay wise than DDS, imo.
I know many won't agree with, for fair reasons might I add, but ghat won't make me change my answer.

Xenosaga! In my opinion, the best Xeno series.
Story, characters, gameplay. It's got everything!
