Did the Microsoft initiative to bring Activision-Blizzard games on Steam just...stopped?

We got Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV, all missing COD games and nothing else.
Still no Diablo 2 Resurrected, Diablo 3 or other games already available on B.net.

I hate to tell you this fam, but Xbox/Acti seemingly have no interest in much of the back catalog. As they've been ignoring it for Steam and Xbox (Even titles that wouldn't need the BC efforts).
As a whole, I think it's either just not being pushed by anyone internally (despite what Phil has said) or Xbox after buying Activision just went back to leaving them alone, with only "newer" titles being where they feel the need to offer it.
It's whack honestly. As getting a new company under you and doing just about jack-all with the back catalog has to be one of the BIGGEST wastes.

Gotta drop feed that shit out to make GamePass worth the monthly sub, or honestly they don't care and won't bring older games to it.

It started before the sale so it's not microsoft's doing. I think they just don't care that much about older games. Wish we got D2R at least.

I was expecting more games to be made BC on Xbox, too.

ActiBliz was porting to steam before Microsoft took control, for internal commercial reasons. Framing it as strictly a Microsoft initiative doesn't seem correct although the way they handled it was similar.
There is a strong business case to port actively supported games and new release games. It costs the same to port older games but they will not sell as much.
Neither ABK on their own or Microsoft chose to comprehensive port their entire catalogue. Microsoft games from as recently as Crackdown 3 (2019!) fell into the black hole where they were modern enough to get pc ports, but not modern enough to get a day 1 steam release, and also deemed not lucrative enough to have a port funded later on either. Gears 4 from 2016 was the same way, even as Gears 5 launched into Steam!
Go back one step further - Microsoft porting all games to PC day 1 starting in 2016 or whenever it was left some games high and dry from the changeover and also they certainly did not go back and port every single console game to PC... they just ported new ones from then on out.
Now we will see the same play out on PS5 and Switch 2 - Microsoft will port some actively supported or specific high value back catalogue games as well as future games day 1, but they aren't going to double back and port every single old thing and even some from not that long before the changeover period will be black holed.

Blizzard didn't feel the need to bring their old games on Steam and they don't value their old catalog outside of remasters. To be fair their games historically have sold plenty on Bnet. So the incentive to launch on Steam hasn't been there.

Looks like it, but I remain hopeful that someone inside the company will champion it again.
I'd buy all of their games again on Steam, no questions asked!

Microsoft still has holes in their own first-party lineup when it comes to bringing things to PC/Steam, so I don't know why everyone assumed Microsoft would suddenly get Activision to put all of their back catalog up again except hopium.

Because millions of people use it. I think they said at one point that there are more D4 players on Bnet than Steam. You have to remember that most of the popular blizzard games were purchased on Bnet.

That's one of the biggest fallacies you could say about it.
Steam also gives you access to like 100x more customers than BNet and it's the standard for every publisher except Epic and Blizzard (whose fanbase is already engrained on BNet).
Very surprising to see people defending this and ripping EA app, Ubi Connect, EGS, etc to pieces.

Doesn't have to be a priority to have a small team constantly bring over the back catalog.
It's the biggest publisher in the world with an insane amount of IP and games technically ready to go - they just need to be brought onto steam. Even if it's not setting the world on fire, sales wise - you never know when an old game suddenly catches the Zeitgeist because some streamer is playing it.
You miss out on sales every day like this.

Battle net is the rare PC launcher that isn't Steam that people actually still use so uhh, not much incentive for them.

They own Bnet and it's still a fairly decent product, so it makes sense to keep it around and not solely depend on Steam.

Putting in work to give 30% to Valve, training your audience to wait doesn't seem that smart.

I think it's just that there's a lot of World of Warcraft players out there who have it installed and have payment details associated with their account. For a PC launcher, that's half the battle right there.
At least that's the theory. In reality, people use Battle.net not out of choice, but because it's the only place they can play World of Warcraft. I can't see many people choosing to buy non-exclusive games on the platform.

We're talking about years after the fact with their games and MS has had much success with launching simultaneously on Game Pass and Steam. They constantly have a lot of games in the top selling games every year. Doesn't happen if you don't release games there.

That's because those other publishers didn't produce enough games with the stickiness of Blizzard games. All that said, their future games will be on every platform. So that's a positive.

The majority of players who play Blizzard games on PC use battle net, not just WoW players. So it's just a really popular store. It's not as popular as Steam, but much to people's disappointment I guess, they're fine with that overall.

If they were fine they wouldn't be releasing Diablo, Overwatch and all new games including COD at Steam lol. They just aren't prioritizing their back catalogue overall

Yeah, I was using World of Warcraft as shorthand, but Blizzard games in general were exclusive to the platform until very recently.

If people buy games on their own storefronts (Xbox / Windows / Battlenet) they make a lot more money than if they buy it on Steam, so why would they not, since they already have the infrastructure established.

The current iteration of Battlenet came out in 2009. Despite hosting the most successful MMO in the entire world, it took until 2021 for you to be able to add friends from different regions

When people say they appreciate the openness of PC gaming, do you think they mean having 14 different clients installed?
