‘Wheel of Time’ Open-World RPG Video Game in the Works From IP Holder’s New In-House Game Studio (EXCLUSIVE)
A video game based on Robert Jordan’s 14-book series “The Wheel of Time” is in the works at iwot Studios’ new games division. Described as a AAA open-world role-playing game (RPG), the “Wheel of Time” video game will be developed wholly in house by the team at the newly launched iwot games, which will be led by Warner Bros. Games vet Craig Alexander. The studio projects a three-year development process for the game, which it expects to launch on PC and consoles. Per iwot, the studio’s new games division “will build on the global success” of Amazon Prime Video’s “The Wheel of Time” TV series adaptation, which is now in its third season, with this new project. Related Stories Based out of growing gaming development hub Montreal, the studio will be “spearheading the interactive entertainment pillar of the company’s multi-platform strategy to expand ‘The Wheel of Time’ across film, television, and gaming.” Popular on Variety iwot Studios, formerly Red Eagle Entertainment, acquired the rights to Jordan’s “The Wheel of Time” book series across film, TV, video games and comics in 2004. Currently, iwot Studios is producing multiple projects within the “Wheel of Time” universe, including the ongoing TV series adaptation at Amazon, as well as an action feature film “Age of Legends” directed by Kari Skogland, and a 3D animated feature in development with Quebec-based Squeeze Animation Studios. Chris Alexander/iwot Games iwot Studios CEO Rick Selvage tells Variety there will be “a lot of continuity in regards to how we approach our transmedia strategy” across the “Wheel of Time” video game, TV series and upcoming films. “It’s an open-world game, and it’ll be everything with the ‘Wheel of Time.’ Everything that is covered in the books, as well as all the backstory elements of it,” Selvage said. “As we build out the world, it’ll be the entire ‘Wheel of Time’ world, it’s not going to be limited to one area or another or a particular age. Of course, we’ll have opportunity on films, since we’re doing ‘Age of Legends,’ we’ll have a lot of assets from that and marketing opportunities and fan integration and a lot of other things. But it will cover the entire world.” “The Wheel of Time” book series, which features more than 2,750 named characters, features “vast elements of the world’s history and lore” that “remain ripe for exploration” beyond Jordan’s written work, per iwot Studios. “Adapting such a legendary mythology into an open-world RPG is a rare and ambitious challenge,” Alexander said. “It takes vision, scale, and a vibrant creative environment — all of which Montreal provides. I’m thrilled to lead the effort and build a world-class team capable of honoring this beloved world.” Previously vice president of product development at Warner Bros. Games, Alexander has led development on hit MMORPG “The Lord of the Rings Online,” “Dungeons & Dragons Online,” a “Game of Thrones” mobile game, and multiple DC superhero titles. He also held senior roles at Activision, Electronic Arts and Sierra On-Line. Alexander is currently building out the the new iwot game studio’s leadership team across design, technology, and art.
