These were always my least favorite part of 3D Mario games.
Seeing it more in Uncharted 4 (mostly harmless), Jedi Games (actively put me off the series) as of late and briefly today in Ghost of Yotei (looks harmless in there).

As a reoccurring thing, I'm just wondering who this? Do people actually like it? Do people talk about these mechanics? What's making devs go, we need sliding?

Yes, it's a fun change of pace. These sections are usually not overly long either.

Why not sometimes?

I like when they're not too difficult and done as a fun set piece for spectacle.

that video was painful to watch, and maybe not in a way that helps the argument.
I don't mind them, I just dislike how telegraphed they are, like "oh, slightly steeper incline; lemme guess--oh, yep, there we go, I'm slidin'. I'm a slider now"

Devs, just like us all yearn for SSX, but EA won't provide, so they try to fill the void in any way they can.

Sure I'll slide some inclines, it's fun enough as a change up for the few seconds it lasts.

It was magical in Journey. But in most games I feel like its kinda dumb.

I normally don't have issues with sliding sections. I usually find them to be thrilling. I haven't played the part of whatever Jedi game that was in the OP, but whoever was playing was pissing me off lol

Yeah it's fun. I don't remember it being hard in Jedi.

In Xenoblade Chronicles, there was a sliding section in Valak Mountain over a pit. If you timed the jump at the end, you got to a different area, if you didn't time it well but still jumped, you ended up elsewhere (I might be wrong about this). I remember cracking up at the speed you picked up. But it was annoying. I can't say I like them much especially if the jump part feels stiff and scripted for the players safety. The dying part can be enjoyable imo.

I was gonna list multiple examples, but I'm on mobile and the site keeps fighting me.

This. I really liked it in Mario and UC4, where it was often combined with jumps and grapple swings.

Sure, if it's done sparingly. Variety is always welcome.

They're super fun when done right. Mario 64 slides are some of the most fun areas in the game.

Tomb Raider 2014 has a few of them.

Good when it's a movement mechanic, bad when it's a level design gimmick that only appears when the dev wants it to happen. Sliding down a 3 foot decline and jumping out of it to maintain speed is what I crave.

I didn't have near the problems as the person in that video with that section.

I recently played some in Jedi Survivor and Jak & Daxter Precursor Legacy, I don't mind them at all.
If Jak didn't have a rewind feature for when I missed a collectible on the way down then it might have been annoying.

I don't usually mind it, but I swear there's so many inclines in the new Assassin's Creed that randomly are or aren't going to make you slide down them (mostly in the natural environment), and it drove me nuts until I gave up and just focused on using the paths most of the time.

I remember it being a complete non issue (and even fun) in the Jedi games lol.
I've literally never thought about this before.
I'm fine with it.

A sequence of it can be fun, more than that and it gets really annoying fast.

Love it! I played the Steel Seed demo yesterday and it was full of incline sliding.

I don't have strong feelings about the mechanic, but they range from, "Hey, this is fun" to "This again?"
