Ex-Rockstar dev reveals when GTA 6 release date decision to be made with 'hard call'
GTA 6 fans have unearthed a post on X (formerly Twitter) from an ex-Rockstar developer who may be providing additional insight on the potential GTA 6 release dateTech22:00, 23 Apr 2025GTA 6 has been in the works for over a decade (Image: Still)Grand Theft Auto 6 is still expected to launch in this calendar year, and while Rockstar is keeping tight-lipped, former developers are being a little more verbose.Leslie Benzies has talked up the project while discussing his own new title, MindsEye, and now fans have spotted a post on X (formerly Twitter) from Obbe Vermeij.Vermeij worked on GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas, as well as GTA 4, and his post has suggested that May could be crucial for the upcoming title – and whether GTA 6 could face a delay.Article continues belowHere's what he had to say back in September 2024, as GTA fans move past the 500-day mark of radio silence from Rockstar Games.Content cannot be displayed without consentVermeij, who has in the months since this post expressed his excitement for MindsEye in June, pointed to the development timeline for GTA 4 to perhaps shed some light on GTA 6's marketing – or lack thereof."The decision to delay GTA IV was made 4 months or so before the original release date," he explained."Any further and it's hard to make the call. R* is probably not in a position to determine whether they will hit 2025 until May-ish," he added, suggesting we may not know about that 2025 release until next month one way or the other.Look, Rockstar, we're almost bored about writing about GTA 6 at this point"Also: GTA VI will sell for 10+ years and there is no competition to worry about. They are not going to release the game until they're 100% happy with it. No matter what it said in the trailer," he said, noting that Rockstar works on its own timeframe.Acknowledging he "didn't talk to anyone" at the studio and that this information isn't based on "inside info", Vermeij also responded to a fan asking if Take-Two Interactive (Rockstar's publisher) could push the studio to launch sooner."T2 let R* make their own decisions and I don't think there is any reason to change that now," he said. So, while Vermeij's post isn't necessarily new information, it could still point to the next few weeks being crucial for Rockstar Games when setting their release timeline whether that's in 2025 or beyond.Recently, an account claimed GTA 6 is targeting a mid-November launch, which lines up nicely given Take-Two's other big-hitters are slated for August and September.Article continues belowFor the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.
